This is the first three books in the Twisted Luck series, an Urban Fantasy you didn't know you needed. A found family, non-romantic series with a smattering of magical beasties. My LuckCoffee and my BFF are all the magic I need. Things have gone wonky around me most of my life. I find an odd amount of dead or dying people, and if something freakish happens, I'm usually in the middle or nearby. My luck dumps me into the weirdest situations. Which means finding a body on the way to work isn't exciting, just frustrating because I can't afford to lose my job. College, when you aren't a mage, is expensive. Nothing is going to stop me. I will have a good life, I will be a great EMT, and I will keep looking for why my twin died. Life is a series of steps; this is step one. But with my luck, anything and everything might happen.
Hired LuckNew city, new job, new threat? With my best friend going to college to learn how to use her magic, I'm job hunting in Atlanta. We're sharing an apartment and I've never been happier. The last thing I needed was to be involved in a murder investigation. Now the police are sure I had something to do with it. News I don't. I've got a job, Jo's going school. I finally am on the track to have my own life. But I can't get the dead girl out of my mind. Who was she and why did she die? What good are my skills if all I do is keep finding dead people? With a serial killer out there, the police and FBI stepping in, I might lose more than the life I had planned. I might lose my life. Once again my luck holds true and I'm in the middle of something I don't know how to deal with.
Educated LuckBeing a double merlin sucks. You’d think having power, having people treat you with respect, an insanely awesome inheritance waiting for me, and knowing you could do really awesome(awful) things would be cool. It isn’t. I’ve got strings you wouldn’t believe attached to the inheritance. Then it turns out other people want it, so instead of suing me, I mean that would be logical, right? No, they are trying to kill me. And I don’t mean a single person, a freaking country! But when Jo gets hurt and my familiar decides to start calling in favors, then things get even more twisted. With my luck we might all end up insane, or dead before this is over. But I refuse to give in. This is my life, and who knows, maybe I’ll survive.
No Luck (a short story set in the Twisted Luck universe. It takes place during Educated Luck.)Magic doesn't solve everything, but sometimes it can create a solution.Charles Wainscot never expected to be a mage, but when it came with a familiar he thinks it might all be worth it. College, new life, maybe new friends. Too bad his old life has followed him with the presence of a high school bully. Either way, he'll manage by himself. But when Cori Munroe bursts into his life things get a lot stranger.
Charles will have to decide who he wants to be and exactly how he is going to handle a bully.
Hey everyone! I'm Mel Todd and I live in Atlanta, Georgia at this moment. I write mostly romance free urban fantasy, urban science fiction, and soon fantasy.
Here are 4 truths and one lie about myself. 1 - I know how to milk a goat. 2- I once propositioned Dean Cain. 3 - I had my picture taken with Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner. 4 - I have driven across the US. 5 - I have a library with over 2000 RPG books.
I'm working on the next book in the Twisted Luck series and have an duology I'm planning on writing for Nanowrimo in 2021.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)
Book 1 = 2.75* -- Book 2 / Book 3 4*
Normally I just mark for the first book but since I read the 5 that are out (then released missed 2 novellas after checking on here). For me the 4* rating kicked in with book two and I'm glad I stuck with the series to read the second book. If questions re her bad luck, had not been answered in book 2, I'd not have stuck around for book 3.
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Just reread this series and again I’m amazed at how well the plot matches the characters and the world.
Love asexual character who still has capacity for love. Agape not Eros. Love the transition from a reserved stadoffish teenager to a strong young woman.
And of course, the beings from other planes who are great in their otherness but still appreciate cake.
Twisted Luck is an excellent urban fantasy!! Innovative magic, likable female characters and lots of action, adventure, and friends bonding. Mel Todd is a gifted storyteller and I buy her books so I can reread them!
