Accepting his birthright will place a mark on Theo’s head. Can he level fast enough to survive?

Separated as a child from his family, Theo has always had a feeling that he’s made for something bigger than the suburban life he seems to be headed for. When a thug threatens his best friend, he can’t help but step in the way. The problem is that Theo’s just not much of a fighter.

Bruised and broken, Theo wakes up to a massive headache and what appears to be floating game text inviting him to become a dragon. No matter how often he rejects the prompt, it simply returns. Knowing that his life can’t get any worse, he reluctantly accepts...

And that’s when he’s finally exposed to the real world. Filled with goblins, orcs, and, of course, dragons.

Theo’s at a huge disadvantage starting at Level 1 and in extreme danger. As he soon learns from his squire, a woman who’s followed him in the shadows since birth, dragons are both jealous and territorial. The only way for Theo to survive is to embark on an epic quest to level up and to claim his rightful draconic heritage.

Drakon Prince is an exciting new LitRPG/GameLit novel from bestseller Jamie Mcfarlane, complete with goblins, dragons, elves, and orcs. The world includes game elements such as skill progression, user and weapon attributes, fortress building, soul shard currency, and much, much more for lovers of all things progression fantasy!

I really enjoyed this book, but I am worried it is affecting me. I want to start hoarding gold and gems. Nice ending, goals accomplished, but plenty to set up a couple of more novels with these characters.

I noped out of the free sample on Amazon before I had got very far into it.

MC gets dragon-based superpowers (due to his heritage of actually being a dragon prince, thus the title) basically ... because he needs to rescue the girl he has a crush on before she gets raped and tortured by their boss.

Hard pass.

That was a fun switch from the normal Litrpg

First off things that I liked. I have read a lot of books in this genre, but most of them fail to have a particularly unique or fun hook. In Dragon Prince, The hook is that the main character discovers that he can turn into a dragon, has magic, and travels to an alternate reality where elves and dwarves and orcs are all real. The story is fun, and the characters are relatively well developed.

Now for the things that I didn't like. It's a short list. There were a few times at the end of each chapter when TK's inventory is listed. And the accounting of what he had in his inventory wasn't always accurate to what he had looted, and to what he had from the previous time it listed his inventory. In other words, at one point he had to give up his only yellow soul gems to make peace with the king. But come the end of the next chapter, it said that he has seven of them. Then at the end of the next chapter, after killing the orc chieftain and looting a yellow gem, It said said he only had one.

Inconsistencies like that pop up in a few places. And there were a few minor spelling issues. Aside from these minor issues I definitely recommend it.

There is only one thing bad about Jamie McFarlane’s Drakon Prince: A LitRPG/GameLit Adventure: it ends. Oh, I will admit that it’s a perfectly satisfying ending, but the problem is that I know there will eventually be a book 2 and the book 1 was so fabulously written, perfect LitRPG/GameLit (something I’m a huge fan of) that I’m disgruntled I’m not having it now. Go read the publisher’s blurb fir a perfectly good description. I won’t say more as I don’t want to give anything away. Just know that this book was superbly written, with perfect world (really world’s) -building, and a wonderful crafted lead and supporting characters. Really, I’d need to access a thesaurus to find enough superlatives to label this book. So much so that I just spent an entire night reading it (it’s 4:39am now - I’m gonna be in bad shape tomorrow but it was soo worth it). Bottom line: it’s easy to highly recommend, and I better be right about my guess that there will be a sequel (or even better a series) and hope it comes out soon.

This is my first experience with this particular genre but as a fun fantasy alone it was so much fun. The stats at the end of each chapter were a nice recap for those of us who don't game.
The characters were likable the plot was tight and I dont remember any glaring typos.
I enjoyed the world building and found it a good mix of plot and character development. Looking forward to another of these stories.

KU Review

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis. I hate trying to define my enjoyment and describe facets of it that would appeal to someone else. It is simply not my style. But for the sake of those fishing for clues:

Character development: very good
Game elements: moderate
Harem elements: none
Tone: good blend of seriousness and humor in blended modern day and fantasy settings

I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

Cheers

This is one of those books where I enjoyed it so much that I could overlook other things.

Theo is a dishwasher at a restaurant where the woman he has eyes for -- Jenna -- is a waitress. The owner is a constant thorn in Theo's side, picking on the small guy and causing him trouble while going after Jenna.

Things escalate one night, and Theo takes a shot at Prinker, the owner. That's a mistake, and the owner starts beating on Theo while grabbing at Jenna. After tossing Theo out like garbage, he hauls away Jenna as his prize.

Theo can't take it, and gets a notification which notifies him that he's a dragon. A young, very inexperienced dragon who can't take his most majestic form yet, but still a dragon.

I won't spoil what comes after that, but the book definitely starts out with an urban fantasy vibe. I was fine with that, but then the book shifts dramatically in the middle, and we're off on a fantasy adventure facing orcs and a lot more.

It's a pretty big dichotomy, but that's fine. Theo continues to grow as a dragon, and Jenna has her own powers as well.

The writing is solid and the editing is good, if not great. I did notice a few mistakes, but nothing big enough to pull me out of the story. The notifications sit in the background, and while they're important, they're also easy to skip if you want to. The story is strong enough to stand on its own.

For me, this is a fun action adventure with dragons, magic users, lots and lots of orcs, and more. It doesn't sound like much, but a book is more than its individual parts.

Recommended. 5/5*

Drakon-volution?

Headaches are killing me. Working as a busboy for minimum wage, but I have to pay the rent somehow. The owner of the bar keeps hitting on my friend, Jenna and wants to fire me. As he puts his arm around her waist, he asks me what I am going to do about it. I hit him on the chin, but he does MMA fighting for fun and I am more lean than muscle. He punches me in the stomach and I go down.

He grabs her again and threatens to fire her. I hit him in the back of the head and get lucky, he goes down, but the bouncer grabs me. He threatens to kill me, but Jenna offers to go on a date with him if he doesn’t kill me. I wake up with multiple bruises and a dislocated shoulder while someone is stealing my wallet.

Someone is there to help, she says her name is Val. And for some reason I see a prompt. She tells me to reject the prompt and she will get me to the hospital. I call Jenna’s phone, but the boss answers and he has a camera in the alley watching me. I ask Val (who looks like Velma from Scooby Doo), if I accept the prompt can I help Jenna. She says yes and that she has failed me, because now they will all start coming for me. And so it begins….

This book started out strong, if a little simplistic at times, but wasn't quite good enough to keep me interested as the main plot kicked in. I started to lose interest as the relationships between the main character and what I assume will become his harem began to develop an earnest. The dialogue that is developing these relationships is awkwardly blunt and in your face as the characters state their feelings in an unnatural way to each other.

At this point the story started to feel more like a soap opera than I am comfortable with in the books I read and I bowed out early. I think mileage will vary on this one depending on your tastes. There's a lot to like here, especially if you're into some easy reading fun. However, this book didn't do quite enough for me to want to finish it off and for that reason he gets three stars from this reader.

Good first

This was a fun read though there were some things that I did not particularly enjoy. Throughout the book the MC was changing. His personality Was becoming unpleasant. Though I understand the change With his becoming dragon it seems to far. And though the title professes litrpg is barely there. You never know how much experience is gotten and level up seem somewhat random. That said it was an enjoyable read with good pacing and clinging of action. The concept He's quite fun however the MC quickly becomes OP for the most part. Obviously there is still some bigger fish in the sea but he is rapidly progressed beyond the basic enemies around him. I look forward to reading the second book I am interested to see where the author wants to go with this.

This is a really good book, the story is written well, the plot moves at a good pace and if you are listening to it, the narration is superb. However I never really lost the feel that the story was being pulled in a few different directions without ever truly deepening into any one area - the systems are there but not overly demanding, the fantasy setting that builds around our characters after the first act isn't quite as impactful as the world feels at first and the relationships are little of all over the place after this same transition and didn't hold me quite as well.

Again though, overall it was a great ride as our main character comes to grips with his new identity along with those who come to join him along the way and I look forward to where this story goes next.

Very uninspired

Anyone else who would have given this book 1 star would usually just quit reading, which means they can't review it at all, inflating the review score. So to anyone who heeds my warning, you're welcome, i took one for the team.

This book was clearly not written for me. While I'm sure somehow it has an audience, it makes no effort to be original, creative, or
even have one moment that hasnt been telegraphed. You can storyboard the entire plot from just the blurb.

It's as if you just fed an AI all the low-effort mediocre litrpg books on kindle and said "eh, make something with dragons in modern day" and it just churned out another formulaic knock-off of what used to be a really interesting genre.

I actually picked this up by chance, I think it was the fourth time id tried getting it to work via audible. I am happy that I continued to try.
The story start's off well and finds that really clever switch where the world is suddenly viewed from a different perspective.
With the characters growing in depth and personality this drops into what i see as a light litrpg story. Similar to land of the undying Lord series.
My only complaint is the frequency of the stat list i found mildly annoying, more so towards the end as it obviously grows longer and longer.
The narrator is engaged and does a fine job of putting across the feeling and emotions of the characters throughout.
One id certainly recommend giving a try and roll on book 2

It started with a bit of an odd cadence to the story.

The story started a bit oddly. The pace was quick as was the action and character development, but the true unfolding of the plot and yarn didn't happen until they passed through the first gate. Then a whole new and exciting tale unraveled, of which I greatly enjoyed!

I hope the next book balances the the two sides of the story.

Amazing story!

Not a harem. While I cannot say for sure what happens in future books this one is not a harem. I felt that this was an extremely well written book. The balance for me was perfect. Very relatable main character. Fun, adventure, mayhem, playful and serious…I cannot say enough good things about this book without giving things away. Very obviously an accomplished and mature writer!

This was an interesting side trip outside my normal Fantasy and Science Fiction. As I've come to find, Jamie built believable characters that I could easily identify with and a story line that held my attention making me want to know what comes next. A good start to what promises to be an entertaining series. Will definitely be looking forward to the next book.

No harem

So one of the reviews I read mentioned it had a harem but this doesn't seem to be the case. It was mentioned in the book but it was also mentioned that the MC was a only a one woman kind of guy. With that out of the way it was a really good book! Totally look in forward to the new book.

Great story

Good story. A lot of good humor throughout the story and overall it hits the right notes. The character information at the end of each chapter felt a little annoying on Audio though. Look forward to the next book.

A surprisingly fun and original story.

I really didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. I ended up staying up till 2 AM trying to finish it but had to give up and finish it the next morning. I’m very anxious for a sequel.

Good read

It was a good read. Had a great premise, human becoming a dragon through game mechanics. It could have had more stats , and attributes, but I feel that the law is starting to expand at the end of the first book.

Very good start to a series.

I enjoyed this story very much, and I look forward to seeing what happens next.
While reading I was also listening to the audio book. When the stats were being read out, there were some incorrect readings. Other than that it was very enjoyable.

Great story, needs more!

This was a eat story - for a start. I can't wait to see where our TK goes in future stories, how he grows, and what trouble he'll get himself and his growing group of friends in as the story continues

great new series

I really like the story of a young man weak but with the honor to risk his life for what he believes in. Now transformed into a Dragon and the real adventure has begun. Can’t wait for book 2!

I really liked this book. I sincerely hope the author decides to make it a series. The ending sooooooo leaves it open to more books! Please write more about Theo, Jenna, and Val's (Velma's) adventures.
