Baking for Every Season is a book that has a wealth of creative and homey recipes that you will want to start baking right away! I found myself breaking out the ingredients to make the Apricot Mascarpone Crostata from a recent wealth of Apricots that I had come in to. There are over 125 recipes in the book, and you will adopt most of these treats into your repertoire.
They divided the book into seasons, with various baked goods being paired with ingredients that would be available that time of year. The types of recipes are typical in that they include tarts, pies, breads, cakes, quiches & more. Many of the recipes are unique and brilliantly crafted, with a mind to holidays and available fruits.
The book starts with the season of Spring and has some scrumptious items right off the bat. Lavender Shortbread, Strawberry-Pecan Thumbprint Cookies, King Cake, Chocolate-dipped coconut-almond macaroons (a favorite!), as well as Apricot Pistachio Rugelach (YUM!). The chapter is rounded out with Mini cream scones with strawberry jam (recipe for jam included), Hot cross buns, and rose and vanilla bean tea cakes make this a gorgeous start to the year. Standouts for me were Rhubarb Turnovers and the Apricot Mascarpone Crostata. As someone who loves to make Victoria Sponge with seasonal strawberries, the offered recipe Orange Vanilla Bean Sponge Cake with Sugared Strawberries had me putting strawberries on my shopping list!
Summers bounty is represented by a variety of fruit based and seasonal nut pastries. There are several exciting items that just beg to be brought to a BBQ or picnic. Recipes such as Blackberry Cobbler, Lemon Crinkle cookies, Dulce de leche alfajores (brilliant!), Lime curd coconut bars, plum jam oatmeal streusel bars (I can’t wait to make this one), Caramel Orange Flan, Blueberry Cheesecake squares with hazelnut crust (just reading this made my mouth water!), honey-pistachio baklava, lemon merengue pie with gingersnap crust (a genius take on an old favorite), Cinnamon-Sugar churros, Blueberry-Lemon drizzle cake, Pinata Cupcakes (original and clever idea!) , Summer peach-raspberry muffins and Summer fruit trifle round out this chapter.
Fall (my favorite season!) is influenced by a host of seasonal flavors that inspired new takes on favorites. Golden hued harvest colors are in array as warm homey recipes that would be well presented at Halloween, Thanksgiving, tailgate parties or other seasonal gatherings. Recipes like Pumpkin Whoopie Pies, Caramelized pear-ginger cake (wow!), Oatmeal pear crisp, Maple pumpkin pie, Caramel cranberry-almond tart, Chocolate cherry & hazelnut biscotti, Apple-ginger tart with cider-bourbon sauce, Honey-nut pie, Classic tarte tatin, Butterscotch bourbon pie, Sweet potato corn bread, Cranberry upside down cake and Pumpkin coffee cake with Pecan streusel makes a list of things you will want to present to your family over the fall season.
Winter
The cold months are represented by distinctly festive desserts that are comforting during the cold dark months. Citrus, Peppermint, and chocolate predominate these offerings and I am over the moon! Meyer lemon curd pavlova with blood oranges & cream, Hot cocoa cookies, Peppermint bark brownies, Peppermint swirl macarons, Chocolate raspberry mini tarts, S’mores fudge, Chocolate-hazelnut pastry wreath, Raspberry Linzer heart cookies, Sweet potato pie with pecan streusel, Pear-almond custard tart, Bittersweet chocolate & salted caramel tart, Spiced apple strudel, Blood orange tartlets, Mini lemon poppy seed drizzle cakes, Chocolate espresso heart cake, Mocha buche de noel, Steamed figgy puddings, Spiced apple honey cake and Panettone, round out a great celebratory dessert cornucopia.
This book is exemplary for its variety and delicious takes on many recipes that were already favorites and have now only been made better. I recommend this book heartily to anyone who loves to bake and collects cookbooks.
