The art style varied greatly between each contributor, which was fun. However, most of these stories were just too short for me, especially the first one; I want more!
Most of the time I am okay with anthologies, but I came to realize that the exception of that is when the anthology book in question is written and or illustrated by different artists, it makes me so overwhelmed with its fast switch of style, so underwhelmed with the length of the stories and the difference of quality, and I am never content with whatever it is providing as a whole.
the cover is super cool and I am so bummed that the content wasn’t as impressive. May fits someone else’s idea of a good collection of stories, but to me, it did not.
I was expecting some of these to be good, very surprised that I couldn’t find a story that I didn’t like. The variety in the art is great, each is unique and stands on its own. The stories are really great too! Weird, cute, sassy, wild, funny, there is just so much going on in one issue and for only 9.99?? Worth it. Can’t wait for the next one!
I read this while extremely high and it was a fking roller coaster. I had to read it again not high and it’s just as weird and hilarious. I love this medium, comics can get away with so much confounding profound. The one where the arm is a limp noodle is my favourite.
This is the first Benji Nate book I did not enjoy. The concept is a Zine format. Different styles and types of work are included. There is everything from the woman who was once a "Playboy Bunny" like women to the chapter that had no humanly possible way to read to the one I almost liked until the main character did something truly stupid. If I do read Good Boy Magazine #2 I will find it at my local library, but something tells me that I won't. If you like Mad Magazine on crack like items, this is for you. Also, if you are interested in zines, or graphic novel artwork this would be an interesting study. It just was not for me.
Really happy that this exists and I think it's a great first entry into an anthology/periodical featuring comic creators making comics about things they're interested in. I personally tend to crave more character/narrative-based comics but ya know, this isn't a graphic novel and plenty of those exist.
this was so much better than i expected it to be! i was just reading it as a comic book on my phone from hoopla to help me fall asleep but i ended up enjoying it so much! i love magazines full of contributions from different artists because you get such a fun mix of aesthetics and styles and stories. this is what fruitcake magazine can be if they can get back to their comic roots :)
I DNF’ed around the 15% mark. I really loved the illustration style of the first comic but I didn’t realise it would just end. I didn’t realise it was a collection of all different comics which I highly early wasn’t invested in. They all ended abruptly. Hard to build a connection to any characters involved with such short snippets. I read the ebook version 129 pages.
Interesting first issue. Pieces from Benji Nate and Ashley Franklin-Robinson were standouts, which I kind of expected, but I also liked others, especially Konstantinos Moutsouvis', Sam Grinberg's, Alex Krokus', and Grayson Bear's pieces. Pretty good range of styles and genres.
3.5 stars A couple of great stories, a couple of blah stories, and a lot of decently amusing ones; all of them squarely in the weirdo alt comix mold. They have strikingly different art styles and each one is pretty short overall.
3.5 - there were some solid funny comics in here, and quite a few i literally skipped over. not everything is for everyone but im glad there's another alt comics mag out there now. for sure a solid pick up!
