Kai’s true form is revealed, Chloe gets the fame she’s always dreamed of, and cats are gonna cat. Also, any connection to this and actual Lovecraftian horror is purely down to name only.

Okay, it’s not quite that tenuous, but it’s still really freakin’ tenuous. The absolute absurdity of this series and what, precisely, it’s hoping to accomplish beyond being a goofy action series, if anything, is kind of its blessing and its curse all rolled into one.

This is not a good manga, but it’s a very fun one for reasons I can’t quite wrap my head around. It might be partly because Chloe is, at the end of it all, really easy to root for, even if she’s making all the decisions you’d expect in something like this.

Her effervescent glee at essentially being put under house arrest, simply because she gets to hang out in a mansion and share beers with her familiars is positively infectious for the brief moment before the entire volume devolves into a hilariously dumb battle.

It might just be that having a kick-ass female lead in a shonen series is exactly all it took. Then again, you could also argue that Chloe is the lead in a magical woman story that just has some real weird ideas, but the amount of fighting does suggest the shonen angle is probably correct.

Now, to be clear, this is still unintentionally dumb. Good old Oscar Cthulhu (if your eyes aren’t twitching at half the names in this story you’ll probably have less to complain about) has reactivated something in Kai, whose true identity is… ridiculous, like everything else.

I think another reason I like this story, which I probably mentioned before, is because it reminds me of the way that older anime like Evangelion just contorted Judeo-Christian lore and cherry picked stuff because it sounded fun. That’s basically what’s going on here, just applied to Lovecraft.

Horror from beyond space and time? Or fanservice? Why not both, this manga suggests. There’s also the sense, especially given that it has a talking scythe, that the mangaka isn’t exactly taking this at all seriously either.

There are worst things to be than a throwback, that all being said. When an elite squad shows up made of a bunch of named fighters with special abilities, you’ve pretty much hit peak shonen right there. And make no mistake, they are also all ridiculous.

But if the mangaka isn’t taking it seriously, they do play the serious stuff more or less straight, which is probably for the best in terms of making us care about any of this. Which I don’t especially, yet here we go again.

So, lots of big old fighting, some very silly reveals, a few decent jokes, and one very funny set of omake where summoning isn’t as easy as it seems and leaves a fishy smell in the air (this was probably the best use of Lovecraft in the entire manga). And the usual cat nonsense from Noel, who is written to be very, very cat indeed.

3 stars - I don’t think I’ll give a higher rating than this ever again, but I also don’t doubt that I’ll be reading the next volume. An okay book that’s incredibly readable for unfathomable reasons, which kind of befits the subject matter anyway.

I wavered between 4 and 5 stars, but couldn't decide. This manga is ridiculous, but it makes me laugh. Some of the new character designs are...😖(although the likeness to Freddie Mercury is hilarious)... But other new designs are🔥 (that drives me nuts in any Shonen series). Noel and Kai get into the dumbest fight, which is honestly a waste of pages and ink, but also in a weird way funny and completely in character and annoying. Nothing really makes a lot of sense, but Chloe keeps proving she's a badass, and that's cool, and I love her logic. As in the previous volumes, she gets a new pretty cool design. She's just so damn likeable. Even when there's something I want to complain about something else counters it, so... Well, I liked it and I'll buy the next one.

So... you remember that bit in the last book where Oscar hinted that Kai was a disaster (The Disaster) waiting to happen? Yeah, this one is where Kai decides to leave to protect his friends from his evil side, but the whole thing gets sidetracked when assassins invade and threaten everyone anyway.

Wasn't expecting it to be revealed this quickly, nor be resolved just as quickly. Stretch out good tension.

I don't think I am the intended audience. I skimmed through wanting more monster fights, but it was mostly handsome men fighting over who protects the main character. It's easy and formulaic but I'll probably read more.

The Story So Far....
When evil spirits escape from their jail in Hades, they return to the real world and plunge it into chaos... Unknown actress Chloé, joined by her new familiars Kai and Noel, has gained the power to fight evil spirits as a ghost reaper for Arkham Bullet! Chloé must confront Dagon, a sea-god summoned by Great Old One Oscar Cthulhu. This foe's overwhelming strength could spell certain doom for Ghost Reaper Girl and all her friends. But just when all seems lost, they narrowly escape a watery grave with a little help from Nyarla. Dagon has followed them back to the surface, however, placing the people of Yokohama in harm's way! Past her limit and unable to transform, Chloé launches a last-ditch attack on the giant sea-god while still in human form-and saves the day!

I'd heard very good things about Ghost Reaper Girl and have been patiently waiting for it to be translated into English. Interestingly, rather than the usual Manga reading style, the artist stated that it should read in the normal Western style of Left to Right.

Chloé Love is a struggling actress and has mostly portrayed corpses and murder victims. Whilst being eyed up by another lecherous producer, she suddenly finds herself being attached by mysterious ghouls. Brushing it off as fancy special effects, she leaves the producer wishing he hadn't tried it on and leaves the studio.

However, on her way home she is attacked again and realises something strange is going on. When a strange man turns up and saves her, Chloé finds herself being ogled once again. However, Kai Iod isn't your usual guy, he's come from Hades to bring back the escaped ghosts.

Needing a vessel to possess to be able to use his full powers, Kai explains to Chloé that she is very special and that is why the ghouls are after her. He also reveals he is a massive fan of her only significant film role in a flop called "Ghost Reaper Girl".

Having befriended a cat-spirit, Noel, Chloé is introduced to Nyarlathotep, who heads the Arkham Bullet, an agency for all those who want to hunt stray spirits. Joining the agency, Chloé, with the help of Noel and Kai, starts her new life as an official ghost reaper.

Quickly becoming a rising star, Chloé becomes a big hit at the agency, but all that changes when she is caught on camera in her transformed state. She soon finds that fame might not be all it cracked up to be!

The H.P. Lovecraft themes run throughout the story. Having already been introduced to Nyarlathotep, Herbert West: Reanimator, and Shoggoth, Chloé now finds herself face to face with the Deep Ones, Dagon and Cthulhu.

I'm enjoying this very much. 5 stars.

From Hunter to Hunted

After giving it her all to defeat a big bad monster Chloe has drawn a wee bit more attention then others in her organization care for. Given a chance to hide out in one of Nyarlathotep's mansions till the heat dies down (and because recent encounters have awoken something inside Kai) the trio are recovering from their epic battle while enjoying this new living arrangements. However those that do not approve of Chloe's connections have made their own plans ultimately leading to unleashing the beast within Kai at last.

Now I am sure by now those that have been following this series realize this is not really Lovecraftian though many of the names are related to known entities from that universe. Just like Rosario + Vampire the mangaka has taken established monster like entities and has spun this unique world that can very possibly become dark but still has time to throw in some humor as well as the occasional perversion to keep things lighter. This combination will not be for everyone but I find the heroine Chloe Love to be a delight and am looking forward to seeing what is up next as we are left with a tense cliffhanger. :)

We get into the House Invasion arc here which is where intrigue ramps up a lot. I find the inner turmoil of Arkham interesting and a way to keep the energy and animosity up without resorting to Cthulhu or something of similar power again. We also learn of Kai's tortured past as Cthulhu's right hand man all the while Akisse delivers wonderful fight scene after wonderful fight scene. His creativity is on full show as well with all the new characters from the East 11 and their amazing and cool abilities.
I appreciate the increased focus on Kai. He has an interesting past and Saike clearly wants to explore it further and this felt like a natural way to merge the increased Arkham infighting with a chance to delve deeper into Kai's past. It also re-roots his relationship with Chloe. The GRG group has a very familial feel as they all live under the same house and Saike makes sure to give down time of them hanging around especially in the 4koma omakes. Chloe being to “save” Kai feels natural then and only shows how strong of a bond both them and the whole team has.

Can't believe we may never get another issue of this manga! The story is just getting so good! Kai's true form is revealed, everybody is out to kill them all, and Chloe is badass as ever. What I like about her is how she is dedicated to her circle and leaves none behind. Well I guess I will have to go read Rosario in the meantime and dream that the artist will get well again so he can finish this story.

Nyarla puts our three leads in one of her resident mansions as Chloé's popularity grows, but it (much too soon) brings trouble to them, once Arkham's president decides to eliminate both Chloé and Noel, and capture Kai! I love how sincere Chloé is, and how she's able to rein in Kai's defeatist attitude. I hope they'll be able to overcome this, because once again, it ends on a cliffhanger.

AAAAAHHHHH!!! I completely agree with Akissa's need to put her health first and go on hiatus, but it was just getting good!!!!! Plus, I guess I didn't notice in the other volumes, but the art was absolutely GORGEOUS in this volume.
