Ok so I started to write a review on the book, but this became a review of the series as a whole...
Its 3 Stars for the series as a whole and 2 Stars for this specific book... (at best)
Even though it is far from a masterpiece, it was a touching story that felt real and unpolished, not everything was packed into a nice packaging with a bow on top. Though, I must admit, at several point throughout the series I was crying and raging for the decisions and turns of events, even when I understood them.
That being said, the books still lack flow, the writer brings you just to the edge of feeling never quiet giving you to relish the good and jumping (sometimes several months) through time, while putting sooo much focus on the bad, the struggle, the pain and anguish (I cried so much...)
Looking back at the whole series I feel that even though the MC have a happy ending this whole series feels more like a tragedy to me., its (1) not the ending I was hoping for (which I can forgive, and somewhat agree (I loved Xander, but as he was, he would have been a bad king and partner)), but (2) the last book basically lacks plot, (3) nothing is explained even though all the loose ends are seemingly closed by the end (which frustrates me to no end!!).
This story even with this type of writing could have been so, so, much more. The plot could have been developed... cos it feels not so thought through... as if the writer didn't know if to focus on the events or on the MC and in the end did neither …
And speaking of the MC, Addie is.... its hard for me to pin point what Addie is... there is a lot of suffering on her part... but I don't see her going above and beyond for her friends, for her ideals, and after the first book I don't even know what her goals are..., and the Stockholm syndrome is quiet confusing for me....
This whole story feels like:
1. Addie gets kidnapped and tortured (or not)
2. her friends do all the work to save her
3. she is saved and happy, but oh wait...
4. time jump
5. she gets pissed off over people around her being protective of her
6. The antagonist cases havocs
7. Addie gets kidnapped and tortured
8. her friends do all the work to save her... again...
REPEAT...
I don't see where in all this she is the hero. I don't see where is she growing to become the Queen that she one day wakes up to be. I do see Addie as a strong female lead, but there are basically 2 stages in her growth (1) strong put ignorant girl (2) Princess/Queen. but there is no actual show of growth, cos she can be one one moment and the other a second later.....
Ill just say that I liked that this story was rough on the edges, and felt real and life like...
I loved/hated that Xander did not grow and change through the series … I loved it cos a million old fallen should/could not change in a span of such a short time in comparison... more over, for a 18 year old girl... but if he would have, the story could have been sooooooo much better... less realistic.... but better...
should have, could have, would have... heh you know....
Well ill let you read it for yourselves and see if you agree or not...
Ill just say that I read to escape, so I would have liked to see this end some other way... for Xander the very least...
RH maybe? lol I don't know...
