Cape Cod Creamery #1

The Sweet Life

Rate this book
Dawn Dixon can hardly believe she's on a groomless honeymoon on beautiful Cape Cod . . . with her mother. Sure, Marnie Dixon is good company, but Dawn was supposed to be here with Kevin, the love of her life (or so she thought).

Marnie Dixon needs some time away from the absolute realness of life as much as her jilted daughter does, and she's not about to let her only child suffer alone--even if Marnie herself had been doing precisely that for the past month.

Given the circumstances, maybe it was inevitable that Marnie would do something as rash as buy a run-down ice-cream shop in the town's tightly regulated historic district. After all, everything's better with ice cream.

Her exasperated daughter knows that she's the one who will have to clean up this mess. Even when her mother's impulsive real estate purchase brings Kevin back into her life, Dawn doesn't get her hopes up. Everyone knows that broken romances stay broken . . . don't they?

Welcome to a summer of sweet surprises on Cape Cod--a place where dreams just might come true.

The Sweet Life by Suzanne Woods Fisher
Cold Stone Creamery series #1. Contemporary women’s Christian fiction.
After Dawn’s finance tells her he doesn’t want to get married only a few days before the wedding, Dawn decides to take the honeymoon trip anyway. Dawn’s mother decides to go with. She lost her own husband less than a year ago and together the two women can get away for a week and either relax or try to make decisions about their future.
In Cape Cod, Marnie finds a mostly abandoned creamery and decides it’s just the thing to restart their lives. Pretty soon Marnie and Dawn are in the middle of rehab and ice cream.

A light emotional journey as the two women access their current lives and twist to the unexpected. They get help from a local pastor and grief from the president of the Preservation Society as they move through the spring with purpose and determination.

A charming rebirth / reassessment for the two women.

The Sweet Life is a story that will engage readers right away. Dawn Dixon's life is turned upside down when her groom backs out of their wedding two months out. Then she finds out her mother had breast cancer surgery and treatment without letting her know. Marnie didn't want her cancer to interfere with Dawn's wedding. The groom, Kevin insists Dawn use the honeymoon reservation on Cape Cod, so she invites her mom. It is quite a trip as the two are so different. Dawn, an accountant and planner bumps heads with her mom, a spur of the moment, act on emotions, not planning person. (Most of us can relate to mother daughter spats and eye rolls.) The trip turns into a longer than planned event when Marnie buys a rundown but historical ice cream shop, a dream that Dawn and her dad, deceased a year ago, shared. The two women, along with a local, Lincoln, work together to make the shop a reality but the Historical Commission chairperson keeps throwing out roadblocks. Kevin cannot stay away as he feels guilty and is worried about Dawn and Marnie. Filled with funny and interesting characters in a small coastal town, this is an uplifting and inspirational story of what is important in life, even if it involves stepping out in faith and taking a risk. I loved how Marnie and Dawn came together in love, faith, and respect. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary ARC from Revell Publishing and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.

Charming!

After Dawn's fiance ends their engagement, her ex-fiance gives her the honeymoon week in Cape Cod because it couldn't be canceled. Dawn is the ultimate planner and feels knocked down by the unexpected life curve of not being on the brink of marriage. Instead of finishing wedding plans, she is searching for what to do next.

Dawn decides to take her free spirited polar opposite mother (Marnie) with her to spend the intended honeymoon week in Cape Cod. In signature style, Marnie impulsively decides to purchase a dilapidated ice cream store in downtown Chatham. Dawn used to love making ice cream but lost the desire after the death of her father.

This lovely tale is about the relationship of mother and daughter, moving on beyond life difficulties and...tackling the historic commission.

Great start to a new series. I particular loved the romantic aspects of the novel.

My gratitude to CelebrateLit and publisher Revell for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

THE SWEET LIFE is not the first book I’ve read by Suzanne Woods Fisher and it won’t be the last. She has a way of grabbing her readers and she never lets us go and now I’m kicking myself for not making time to read all of her books! THE SWEET LIFE is the first book In the Cape Cod Creamery series. Dawn thinks her mother has lost her mind after she buys a creamery in Cape Cod. Dawn and her mother, Marnie are on a groom-less honeymoon in Cape Cod. Her fiance has cancelled the wedding and they were supposed to stay in Chatham. He couldn’t get his money back so Kevin offers the room to Dawn and Marnie. Such a fun story!

Besides the condition of the creamery, these women are going through their own problems. THE SWEET LIFE introduces the reader to a gorgeous oceanside town of Chatham Massachusetts. I personally have been there and it is breath taking. I’ve been to the magnificent hotel in this story, The Chatham Bars Inn, for tea and it was amazing! Anyway, while Dawn is there, her mother shocks her with her new store purchase. Not to mention, her dad has only recently passed and her mom drops a cancer bomb on her as well. To say Dawn is stressed out, would be a huge under statement. On a side note, be prepared to crave ice cream the entire time you are reading this beautiful story!

THE SWEET LIFE is filled with forgiveness, family, and love and had me staying up way too late one night to finish! I had to know where Suzanne Woods Fisher was taking us and what would happen to these wonderful characters. There is so much heart in Suzanne’s writing that I was left with a huge smile on my face and my heart very happy. All of the characters are very interesting and believable, so much so that I felt as if I’ve known them for a long time. Now I need to figure out how to fit more of Suzanne’s books into my reading plans! I can totally see THE SWEET LIFE becoming a Hallmark movie that I would love to watch. I loved watching these women grow and come into their own. The secondary characters are just as important as Dawn and Marnie and you will come to love them all.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This had very little romance and was much more a mother-daughter contemporary fiction. It was sweet, I liked seeing the mom and daughter dynamic, and the ice cream part was fun.

READ FOR ENDORSEMENT

An oft-used meme states, “I followed my heart and it led to ice cream.” Now Suzanne Woods Fisher has gifted us with an inspiring, irresistible story in which following the ice cream leads to a whole bunch of heart. Fisher is a winsome storyteller who never disappoints, and that’s certainly true here as she celebrates variety as the spice of life, love, and ice cream flavors. The Sweet Life is an effortless charmer!

Dawn couldn't be a more buttoned-up, vanilla all-the-way, type-A perfectionist. And can I say that I hate how much of myself I saw in her? No one could ever call me "buttoned up." I'm not exactly stuck in ruts. Oh, and while I'm a perfectionist, I'm not exactly "type-A." And yet I'm all those things and more. The way Dawn plows through and pushes her agenda on folks without even realizing she's doing it? Yeah. That. Gulp. I swear Carissa in Sensible Shoes by Sharon Garlough Brown has a long-lost sister.

And then there's Marnie. Seriously, I'm just like her, too. Creative, jump into things with zest, anti-confrontational whenever possible, and yeah. Let's avoid everything that makes us uncomfortable. Yep. There's me.

Linc? Yep. You'll find me helping wherever I can like he does. I just hope I'm as wise as he is when I grow up. Kevin? Yep. When people do to me what I do to them like Dawn did to him (did you follow that?)... I react just the same. But thankfully, the Lord has taught me to do what Kevin did. Jump right back in and help again when the healing has begun.

What's my point? If you ever wanted a contemporary novel where the characters are both very much like you and very much not like you--full of fun moments, nail-biting moments, angsty moments, redemptive moments, and all the joys and sorrows in between, The Sweet Life is probably for you. It sure was perfect for me!

Churning with smooth, understated symbolism, The Sweet Life offers a refreshing (and mouthwatering at times) look at relationships, self, and just what the Lord does in and for us.

*You can’t buy happiness. But you can buy ice cream and that is pretty much the same thing.*
*Ice cream is cheaper than therapy *
*Ice cream never asks silly questions. Ice cream understands.*
Even the lead-ins to the chapters gave me an appetite for ice cream!
Reading this novel is like enjoying a nice big bowl of your favorite flavor!
I liked meeting Marnie and her daughter Dawn as each is navigating life’s troubles. They have lost their dad/husband, Philip. In addition, Marnie has just recovered from breast cancer and Dawn is reeling from a broken engagement weeks before the wedding. Although total opposites in temperament, they join forces to realize a dream that Philip had of opening an ice cream shop.
As a lover of all things historical, I relished the process they had go through to preserve their building, while updating it enough to make it a viable business. Add in interesting facts about making ice cream and the sometimes quirky inhabitants of the town and you have a great story. Not that ice cream fixes everything, but Marnie and Dawn grew in their faith and realized a purpose in their lives as they took on the task of their new venture.
I am glad there will be more books about Main Street Creamery in Cape Cod.

THE SWEET LIFE (Cape Cod Creamery Book #1) by Suzanne Woods Fisher is an emotional Christian women’s fiction with romantic elements featuring a mother and daughter who are completely opposite in every way and dealing with personal loss while opening a Cape Cod ice cream shoppe.

Dawn Dixon has always planned every aspect of her life. When her lifelong boyfriend walks away two months before their wedding she is devastated and she learns her mother has been hiding her diagnosis of breast cancer from her, she is lost. Nothing is going as planned.

Dawn decides to take her mother, Marnie with her on her groomless honeymoon to Cape Cod. And Marnie jumps at the chance to not only help Dawn, but to get away from an empty home since the death of her husband almost a year ago.

Marnie has always been a person who makes decisions on feelings rather than facts and plans. She sees a rundown ice cream shoppe that she just feels she needs to buy, and she does. As always, Dawn feels the need to clean up her mother mess, but this mess may not really be a mess but a way for the mother and daughter to connect, heal, and bring a dream to life.

I really enjoyed all the characters in this story. Dawn and Marnie were the ying and yang to each other and as much as they rubbed each other the wrong way, they were definitely what each needed. The relationship worked even when they were mad at each other, they still loved each other. Their emotional growth and understanding of each other throughout the story was what really pulled me in. I liked how the men in their lives were integrated into the story without taking over. Lincoln helped Dawn and Marnie with no expectations, and he was always there when Marnie needed him. Dawn changed the most and with the changes came the understanding of why her relationship with Kevin fell apart and it was with forgiveness and understanding that they were able to move forward. There are Christian references and Bible verses laced throughout the story, but I did not feel they were intrusive or gratuitous. I am looking forward to seeing were this series goes in future books.

I recommend this Christian women’s fiction with romantic elements.

In The Sweet Life by Suzanne Fisher Woods Dawn Dixon takes her mom, Marnie, on her honeymoon after her fiancé dumps her. They spend the week in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Marnie decides to buy a historical building and open an ice cream shop. Their adventure begins.

The author did an amazing job connecting me to both Dawn and Marnie with their alternating POV’s. It was a pleasure to watch them both grow, connect and learn to appreciate the other. I found myself wrapped up in their building renovation, how to make ice cream ,and in the town of Cape Cod.

The author begins each chapter with a quote about ice cream and I noticed myself actively searching out ice cream in my home, in my neighborhood, and on vacation after reading. The Sweet Life by Suzanne Fisher Woods is truly as sweet as it sounds. I highly recommend it.

I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review.

When Dawn Dixon’s fiancé calls off the wedding, Dawn decides to go on the honeymoon to Cape Cod with her mother, Marnie. Marnie could use the break as well. She had been going through a rough time and Marnie had yet to tell her daughter about it. Marnie is exploring the shops in downtown Chatham when she comes across a run-down ice cream store. Marnie can imagine what the shop will look like all fixed up. She arranges to meet with the owner and Marnie purchases the Main Street Creamery without consulting Dawn. Dawn happens to be the one with the experience making ice cream. Dawn and her deceased father went to the Penn State Ice Cream School. While Marnie likes to dream and jump in, Dawn is a planner. She likes spreadsheets and lists which is not Marnie’s style. Dawn agrees to stay and help her mother for the summer to get the place renovated and open. The two women get help from Lincoln Hayes, a local, who takes an interest in Marnie. Their improvements, though, are met with resistance from the chairman of the local Historical Commission. As if the mother and daughter do not have enough on their plate, Dawn’s ex-fiancé arrives in town to offer his assistance. Will they make a go of the Main Street Creamery? The Sweet Life by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a charming story. I enjoyed my trip to Cape Cod with Dawn, Marnie, Lincoln, Kevin, Nanette, Leo, and Mrs. Nickerson-Eldredge. I thought The Sweet Life was well-written with developed, realistic characters. We get to meet some of the quirky and kind characters who live in the town. One of my favorites is Leo the Cowboy and I also loved Nanette (her antics will have you laughing). It was enjoyable following Marnie and Dawn as they fixed up the building and experimented with ice cream flavors. Dawn was determined to get the best vanilla ice cream possible. They came up with some interesting flavor combinations. I loved the quotes involving ice cream before each chapter. My favorite is, “When everyone has let you down, you still have ice cream.” There were also some fascinating facts about ice cream. I can tell the author did her research for the book. I liked seeing Marnie and Dawn grow in their faith as well as find their purpose in life and where they belonged. There are good life lessons in the story including having faith and taking a risk. God will lead you down the right path if you allow Him. The Sweet Life is a story about healing, love, self-reflection, faith, and ice cream. I do need to warn you that The Sweet Life will have you craving ice cream so make sure your freezer is well stocked with your favorite flavor. I am looking forward to the next book in the Cape Cod Creamery series. The Sweet Life is a sweet treat with nosy Nanette, jumbles of junk, a fragmented engagement, various vanillas, historical hitches, a pier support problem, and incredible ice cream.

This book is a sweet look at the changes in a mother-daughter relationship as they both make changes in their lives and start working toward a common goal. The two women love each other but totally view life in opposite ways, Dawn works to keep her life orderly, to follow directions, exceed at her job and live life by a set of rules. Her mom, Marnie is more of an earth mother. She does what feel right at the time and doesn't really look at the long term effects of her decisions. This is the story of how they learn to understand each other as they work towards a goal that is totally out of their normal lives.

Dawn is engaged to the love of her life. She had known Kevin since they were children and she always knew that they would follow a normal progression - fall in love, get engaged and then get married. When Kevin cancels the wedding several weeks before, she isn't sure how to handle her new life. Kevin suggests that she go to Cape Cod to spend their honeymoon time and she impulsively decides to take her mom. While she sits in the sand and thinks about the next organized steps in her life, her mom wanders around the small town where she sees a dilapidated building that had once housed The Main Street Creamery. Without much of thought, she decides to buy and renovate the building, without even considering that she has never owned a business, doesn't realize the constraints of renovating a building in the area of town where the historical society governs all building changes and worst of all, he has no idea how to make ice cream! When Dawn finds out what her mom has done, she quickly begins to work on getting her mom out of the sale but after thinking about it, she agrees to take a leave from her job and spend the summer with her mom trying to bring the ice cream shop back to life. Their initial plans are met with lots of problems - repairing the building becomes a nightmare with big pushback's from the historical society, things cost way more than they'd planned but they kept working towards their goal of opening the ice cream store by Memorial Day weekend. With the unexpected help of a couple of people, they begin to make progress until the historical society calls a halt to renovations right before the long holiday weekend. Will they be able to open their shop? Will Marnie be able to convince Dawn to make more than five flavors of ice cream and to start experimenting with more exotic flavors? And most importantly will their new endeavor be a success?

This sweet little book would be a great addition to your beach bag for your summer vacation. It may have you searching for some ice cream as you read it but what's a vacation without a little ice cream?

Awww what’s not to love about this??
Love the Author!
Love the Cover!
Love Ice Cream!
Love the Story! ~ true it starts out not so happy!

Dawn Dixon and Kevin Collins have known each other since middle school and there was never any doubt that they would get married. At age twenty-seven wedding plans are in full swing when Kevin, the love of her life tells Dawn he has doubts.
Now Dawn is on beautiful Cape Cod with her mother Marnie and not Kevin.
Marnie recently had breast cancer surgery which she hid as she didn’t want to disrupt the wedding plans ~ now doesn’t want her daughter to suffer from heart ache, so decided to buy a run-down ice cream shop ~ as we all know everything is better with ice cream.

On another note: Never ask a woman eating ice cream out of a carton, how she is dong!

I am a big psychological thriller fan and sometimes a story like this is JUST what I need.
Sometimes it is such fun to do something new!
Yes! This is such a delightful read! It is the story of difficult relationships and making them work.
Hope you enjoy it plus I am sure you too will want some ice cream before you finish this quick read!
This is Book #1 in the Cape Cod Creamery series! I am looking forward to Book #2!

To me the ‘Cherry on top’ (sorry couldn’t resist saying that!) of a great read are the Author’s Acknowledgements ~ and/or Author’s Notes; typically an enjoyable/ insight to the motivation for the story. In this case there is also a great “Questions for Discussion” ~ not only helpful in a book club discussion but also just makes you think a little more about the story.

Want to thank NetGalley and Revell for this early eGalley.

Dawn Dixon did not expect her fiance to call off their engagement only weeks before the wedding. When Kevin insists that Dawn make use of their non-refundable honeymoon, Dawn invites her mother Marnie along. Marnie, a widow and recent cancer survivor, has a zeal for life that logical, planner Dawn has never quite understood.

That's never more clear than when Marnie decides spur-of-the-moment to buy an ice cream shop there on Cape Cod during their week-long groomless honeymoon. When Dawn realizes she can't talk her mother out of it, she decides to throw herself into making sure her mother doesn't lose all her savings in this adventure. Plus it's a convenient way to avoid going back to her problems in Boston.

Here's another book that I didn't have plans to read, but it grabbed my attention with its cute cover and premise. I enjoyed the opposite personalities of Dawn and Marnie, and there's a bunch of issues for them to deal with—or avoid, depending on the situation. The setting is lovely and full of personality, and so is the ice cream shop Marnie purchases.

All the talk about making ice cream was fascinating. I've experimented with homemade ice cream a little bit, but nothing like what Dawn has done. And while I enjoy ice cream, I would certainly never confess to being a connoisseur.

If you enjoy women's fiction, being tempted to eat ice cream, and mother-daughter stories, I recommend this one to you.

I received my copy of the book from the publisher. All thoughts in this review are my own.

What can be more sweet and uplifting than revival of an ice cream shop on Cape Cod by a mother-daughter duo trying to escape grief and disappointment? Suzanne Woods Fisher delivers just that read through Marnie the mom, a cancer survivor and recent widow, and Dawn the daughter, a jilted bride. The backdrop of Cape Cod is gorgeous and I felt like I was far away from the daily grind of suburban living while getting to know them.

Marnie is a passionate, fanciful, and sometimes flighty dreamer mired in grief from suddenly losing her husband and receiving a cancer diagnosis. Her refusal to face fear and reality gets in the way of deepening her relationships. Dawn is a straight-laced accountant who stays inside the box and plans for everything and anything; her need for control of every situation clashes with her mom’s free way but they learn more about each other and about God as they work together to revive the ice cream shop. I really liked the two supporting male characters Lincoln and Kevin. Lincoln provided wisdom from regret having turned to purpose and Kevin showed what happens when one comes back into the fold of God’s will and plan.

I also enjoyed the mentions of Paul and Maeve from Three Sisters Island series, which I didn’t expect.
I received the book via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

A delightful read from start to finish! Readers who enjoy a small town setting with colorful characters, mother-daughter relationships, some romance, and bits of humor, will like this story. It is full of spiritual insights too as both mother and daughter deal with loss and grief from differing perspectives. I loved the way they began to appreciate each other's strengths and work together on such a daunting project despite their differences. The story had a lot of depth as each one grew through their experiences, and learned to move past the pain and embrace change.
A thoroughly enjoyable read! Highly recommend!

Dawn recently broke up with her fiance, Kevin and was completely shocked by the break up. Kevin sends her and her mom off on their honeymoon to Cape Cod. Marnie and Dawn are completely opposite in their personality and so this trip could be difficult for both of them.

Marnie ends up purchasing an ice cream shop on a whim and from there the fun begins. This book made me want to go out and get some good ice cream.

I really enjoyed the characters of Lincoln and Kevin!

Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this first book in the Cape Cod Creamery series. The setting made me want to hop on the next flight to the beach and the ice cream details made me want to grab a spoon and dig in!

This book tells the story of Marnie and Dawn Dixon, a mother and daughter that journey to Cape Cod for a vacation and end up buying a rundown ice cream shop and restoring it. They each have their own personal issues to deal with, as well-Dawn with the fallout of a broken engagement, Marnie with a recent bout of breast cancer, and both of them with the loss of Phillip, Marnie's husband and Dawn's father.

The romance thread in this book is very light, but honestly, I didn't miss it because I was so invested in Dawn's and Marnie's stories, particularly Marnie's. This is a beautiful story of a mother and daughter that often butt heads but love each other in spite of everything. I recommend this book if you enjoy ice cream, beach vacations, and heartwarming stories of faith.

A Sweet Story

Dawn Dixon is a planner. Her favorite quote is, "I adore spontaneity, providing it is carefully planned." She thought she knew what lay ahead in her well planned life. However, it all fell apart when her fiancé, Kevin Collins, called off their engagement. Now she's heading to her would be honeymoon spot in Cape Cod with her mother, Marnie, instead of Kevin.

Dawn and Marnie are like night and day. While Dawn is a planner, Marnie is a spontaneous risk taker. Unfortunately she doesn't look ahead to the big picture of her risk taking and spontaneous decisions. Consequently, she often ends up overwhelmed with her spontaneous decisions, the latest one being to open an ice cream shop in Cape Cod.

The Sweet Life is a very sweet (pun intended) story. It is a story of self-reflection, healing, love, and faith. Some of the healing and self-reflection occurred between Dawn and Marnie, and some occurred between Dawn and Kevin. In each relationship, both parties went through a lot of self-reflection that resulted in a new understanding of themselves as well as a new understanding of the other person. Watching Dawn, Marnie and Kevin going through this process had me reflecting as well. It brought to mind that while we see things from our perspective and point of view, we need to also see it from the other person's perspective. Doing so will help us gain a better understanding of ourselves and them, which can bring our relationships to another level. Such was the case with Dawn, Marnie and Kevin, and watching them go through this process is what made this a wonderful and sweet story that I highly recommend.

The Sweet Life is charming, endearing, heartwarming, and made me want to experience this story for real. I loved the mother and daughter relationship and how they grew to understand and appreciate their differences as well as discovering their similarities. I have nothing negative to say about this book except I didn’t want it to end as it checked off all my boxes for a complete package. Sometimes to find where God wants us we have to take that leap of faith and make changes that may be difficult. I loved how Marnie and Dawn found healing by stepping out of their comfort zone. An engaging, charming story of two courageous women, second chance love, and repairing relationships amidst the fun setting of an ice cream shop and the behind the scenes work. A sweet and sticky story that leaves you wanting more. I can’t wait to read book two. Make sure you grab a cone and settle in for a great read.

December 2025: Second time to visit the Cape Cod creamery, but this time I listened. Still a 5 star read and had the same heartfelt emotions, even knowing how the story would end.
It was strange for me at first to get use to the voices the narrator picked for each character. Because it was not the voices I gave them in my head…butshe did a great job!

May 2023:First fiction read of my adult life and the book that made me realize why people read fiction!
I picked this book up on a whim at the library, mostly because of the cute cover and it being about ICE CREAM! I cried at the end of this book but in the best way. I can't say enough good things about this book...I can not WAIT to read the rest of the series.

A wonderful 4 star romance!

Dawn wedding is cancelled and she finds out her mother went through breast cancer without telling her. Ex finance Kevin gives her the honeymoon to the Cape, while there Marnie, Dawn mother, decides to buy an old Ice Cream shop. Dawn is worried but takes time off to help her mother since Dawn loves making Ice Cream. Running into problems with the historical committee and having Kevin coming back into Dawn life to help with the business can Dawn pull this off and give her mother something she has dreamed of her entire life? This was a fun story and I did enjoy it. I have to admit I didn't like Kevin for hurting Dawn so deeply. The one thing he does do is want to there for Dawn and see him change his feelings for her. All in all a great book and I do highly recommend it!!!

The Sweet Life caught my attention right away—the poor heroine faced two of the worst scenarios possible in life. The writing is very good and the reader is drawn into the two female leads' pain.

I also liked learning about owning a business and making ice cream—if there is any flaw in the book, the details might have gotten a bit overwhelming. I can see the author’s passion for research and enjoyed learning.

A joy for me was the main love story that had a surprise twist and I love those! The fact that the mother of the heroine also has a POV and is a real, three-dimensional person was another wonderful addition.

If you like a lovely twist and feeling like the woman got herself a real good man, this is a book for you. Plus, there is true character development and growth. Smiles…

This is great start to Suzanne's new series. Dawn and her mom reopening an ice cream parlor in Cape Cod makes for a great premise and I am all in for it. The story was really good and was a quick and easy read/listen. I also liked that we get to keep up a bit with characters from Suzanne's Three Sisters Island series. The story is fun and has several humorous moments, all the while dealing with the emotional challenges Dawn is facing and her growth through the novel. Really great read for me!

I received this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

"Dawn felt queasy, thinking of what a cliche she'd become. Jilted. Just two months before the wedding. Maybe not left at the altar, but pretty darn close."

Yet, Kevin wanted her to take their non-refundable honeymoon trip to Cape Cod and enjoy it with someone else. Dawn chose . . . her mother? Leaving her fast-track-to-the-top job behind in Boston, Dawn and her mother Marnie, headed towards the upscale hotel in Chatham that should have been paradise, but "the loss she felt over losing Kevin hurt in a way she didn't know if she could ever fully recover from". As if that wasn't enough to make Dawn want to bury herself in the sand like a crab, her polar-opposite, pie-in-the-sky mother had managed to fall in love herself, with an old historic building, formerly known as The Main Street Creamery".

As Dawn is pulled into helping her mother bring the old establishment back to life, the two of them discover that the building isn't the only thing that is being given a second chance at life in Chatham. Marnie's grief over the recent death of her husband, coupled with her recent health problems are being eclipsed by some brand new dreams of her own, and Dawn . . . . well, Dawn is rediscovering, or maybe allowing herself to discover for the first time, her amazing creativity; with of all things . . . . ice cream flavors.

But all is not going as perfectly as the mother-daughter team would like to believe. Historic buildings require a certain measure of authenticity, and Chatham's historic commission is unbending about its regulations. Dawn and Marnie need help; they need a rescuer, maybe even two.

What a charming story!

Dawn's life is in a tailspin after being dumped by her fiancé and her mother buys an ice cream shop in Cape Cod on a whim while they are vacationing on Dawn's honeymoon.
A heartwarming book set on the picturesque shores of Cape Cod, that explores the mother-daughter relationship as they both dive headfirst into the world of ice cream making. The story was a little slow to start as everything just seemed to be falling apart for Dawn and I felt so bad for her, but it definitely picked up as they started to work together and discover that they don't want things to go back to how they were before. I liked how Dawn starts taking care of herself, re-examining her beliefs, and talking more with her mom.
This was a heartwarming read, with a cast of wonderful characters, in a beautiful coastal setting. More of a women's fiction read, with heartwarming elements. I liked that it takes a realistic look at the relationships, and I loved learning more about the craft of ice cream. A wonderful novel about mothers, daughters, love, loss, faith and ice cream.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

As an ice cream lover this book had me hooked early. It was refreshing being in the mom and daughters alternating points of view. It gave us so much insight into their relationship. I enjoyed Dawn’s character growth and the setting.

The romance was not the main focus, which was fine, but I would have enjoyed a bit more.

This is a delicious feel-good story that I simply devoured! I LOVED the New England setting and I loved the second-chance romance. The mother/daughter conflicts were written well. This was my first Suzanne Woods Fisher, and I was really impressed. I can't wait to read more!

The Sweet Life is my first book by Suzanne Woods Fisher. This is the first book in the Cape Cod Creamery series--and a new series that I am thoroughly enjoying.

Dawn Dixon and Kevin Collins have been busy planning a wedding. Well, at least Dawn has been busy planning the wedding. Her mom, recently widowed Marnie Dixon, had been helping her too. Then everything falls apart in Dawn's perfect life. The wedding is called off. Marnie shares that she has had a breast cancer diagnosis. While the wedding was called off, the honeymoon was already paid for so Kevin encouraged Dawn to go ahead and take the time off and enjoy the trip with a friend. After the cancer diagnosis, Dawn chooses to take her mom with her to Cape Cod. While there, Marnie buys a run-down ice cream shop. For Dawn, whose life had been humming along perfectly until now, she isn't sure what to make of all the life changes. What would they do about this ice cream shop? Should she help her mom make a go of it or get her to back out of the deal?

I have been on a quest to read lighter books this year. From the cover, I thought The Sweet Life might be a lighter contemporary novel. There are some lighter moments--but there is also plenty of modern day challenges included throughout the book. I like how Fisher deals with the challenges for the most part. She brings some good lessons out of her character's lives. I liked seeing Dawn grow and change. I liked how Marnie also grew and changed. It did kind of bother me that Fisher makes her out to be an old lady but she is 58 years old--which doesn't seem that old in today's world. At the same time, I found Marnie's struggle with going to the cancer support group to be entirely realistic. I also like the town's cast and the setting. There is also some faith elements that I liked. All in all, The Sweet Life was an enjoyable read and I am excited about this series that is new to me.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead last year for a Bookstagram tour. All opinions within this review are my own.

Be sure and stock your freezer with your favorite ice cream before digging into The Sweet Life by Suzanne Woods Fisher because you’ll be craving some throughout this story.

Dawn’s life isn’t going as planned, and she’s floundering. Then her mom drops another bomb on her, and the two decide to take a trip to Cape Cod together. Which is a testament in itself because Dawn and her mother Marnie are such opposites.

It took me a good while to like Dawn. She’s very rigid and goal focused. Marnie, on the other hand, was a little too free and loose with her impulsive decisions. While the two have different ways of approaching a problem, they don’t dislike each other. In fact, you see very quickly that Marnie wants the best for Dawn.

While this book does deal with relationships and is a great summer read, it’s not one of those drag your emotions through the mud and stomp on them books. It’s the perfect book to read after finishing one of those other books, though!
