A good book about one of the lesser known / talked about nations in this universe.

The story gives a really good insight into how the the Free World Leagues works / operates in the new timeline.

The ending of the main plot seemed a bit rushed and unsatisfying to me - However, since it is one of only few books focusing on the FWL I think 4 stars are still valid!

A fantastic continuation of the dramas of BattleTech's Free World League. Hunting Season brings closure to questions long asked, while raising more in their stead.
Lee has done an incredible journey continuing the story of the Mariks and their endeavours to unite a fractured society. The writing is top notch, and the layers of complexity are expertly woven between moments of battlefield chaos that creates a depth to the lore that is always welcome.

Easily one of my favourite BattleTech novels, hoping we get to see more of Lee's work.

Solid First Novel

This is a solid first novel from this author in the Battletech universe. Overall I found strength in the characters (most of them) and believability in their actions. The plot was woven well and paced reasonably.

The protagonist is handled well, with a rich emotional undercurrent that makes her likeable and relatable. It's nice that we finally see some action from the scions of the FWL that isn't internecine fighting. I look forward to seeing where Nikol will go in the future.

That said, I did have a few issues. The dialogue at times left me feeling like the secondary characters were all a bit too cliche, with the "villain" ending up chewing the scenery with most of his page time. The other small quibble I have is that that action sequences felt flat and rushed. I can excuse this somewhat as the last several major Battletech novels have seen over the top drawn out combat scenes that plodded along at the expense of character and plot. I see this novel as something of a reaction to that trend, possibly overreacting in the effort.

Overall it is a good read and I'm hoping to see more of Nikol Marik in the future.

What a great read! Hunting Season has entered the upper pantheon of my personal favorite BTech books. It's got all my favorite tropes: shady dealings, double-crosses, inter-house politicking, a mystery, strong personalities, mech combat that focuses on the pilots and the stakes, and lasting consequences that have a real impact on the characters and overall lore. I was hooked from the first and burned through the book in a week. It has my highest recommendation if you're into BT books.
