Deadish: A hilarious behind the scenes novel about surviving hospital politics

Rate this book
Ashley and Chris, two junior surgeons in Serenity Hospital, struggle with management and Consultants to save their patients as well as their own lives. Their unintentionally hilarious interactions with the real people they meet overlap with the machinations of blundering managers and senior doctors.
The graphic nature both of operative surgery and interpersonal exchanges with patients and administrators are excruciating yet often laugh- out- loud events.
This darkly humorous novel will entertain as well as giving insights into why managers, doctors and patients often behave in the way that they do

It's cleverly written in that Serenity Hospital "could" be an NHS one or may be private and in a different healthcare system. However the story is an extrapolation from medicine perhaps thirty years ago? The UK system wouldn't tolerate drunk nurses on duty, Drs with "known" drug habits pr the levels of incompetence described in the book, and as for the use of morphine to specifically shorten someone's life that just doesn't happen. So I struggled with suspending my disbelief and have heard much better surgical and Dr stories during my career. None of it really rang true to me even as a basis for exaggeration.

Deadish: A hilarious behind the scenes novel about surviving hospital politics...
With a title like that, I was expecting to be laughing nonstop, and while there were definitely times I chuckled, overall, for me, it missed the mark. Let me be clear, though: I don't think this was a book issue as much as it was a me issue. I simply just don't think I was the right audience for this book.

I did enjoy reading the book, and I think if you have a medical background, you would relate to these characters and appreciate the humor more than I did. My favorite thing about the book was the behind the scenes aspect and the banter among the doctors. This teaching hospital did have quite a unique group of physicians!

A lot of us put doctors on a pedestal, but at the end of the day, they are just people, and they have issues and challenges too. In Deadish, there is one doctor in particular who thinks just a little too highly of themselves, I have personally been around such a physician before. This particular character made me roll my eyes, but other characters like Ashley I found myself cheering on and quite endeared towards.

If you enjoy medical shows, have a medical background, and/or love dark humor, then I recommend this book to you.

UPDATES:
So, I read this book a couple of months back and just recently listened to it as an audiobook. I have to say that I actually liked listening to it more than I did reading it. After listening, it definitely is more of a 3.5/ 4 for me. The narrator has a great voice, and she really brought the characters to life and allowed me to appreciate the humor more.

I received a copy of this book and audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars!

I found this audiobook darkly hilarious. Especially the moment that gives the books its name. The story follows Ashley and Chris, two junior surgeons in Serenity Hospital. They soon get caught up in office politics, issues with management, and bureaucracy, and they quickly become disillusioned with their hopes and dreams of helping people.

I work in social care, which is a high-pressured job as I can imagine it is the same working in the health sector. Yet, you need to be able to handle challenges and not take things personally... easier said than done! Often, a dark sense of humour can get you through the day. I thought this book was a tongue in cheek exploration of some of these challenges and brought a humour to what is a very difficult and challenging role. If you want a realistic portrayal of medicical procedures, this probably is not the book for you, although I imagine there is a hint of truth between the pages and it had some details of medical conditions and treatment that was really interesting. It also talks about death.

Sadly, targets need to be met, funding is cut, and marketing is a thing. I thought the book held up a mirror to these aspects of making a business out of caring for people.

It was well written and lots of aspects were well observed, such as imagining people will be grateful that you have tried to help them... not always!

I really enjoyed this listen, and I found myself laughing along on my drive to work.

With thanks to the author and Love Book Tours for providing a copy of the audiobook. This is my honest review, which I'm leaving voluntarily.

A book full of humour and the stark reality for medical professionals. Working in for field of medicine isn’t for the faint hearted- among a few essential qualities you’ll need are: a warped sense of humour, grit, self belief and dedication!
Pair that up with unexpected complications, unusual cases and inside politics itself a recipe for disaster at times.
Following the lives of two upcoming junior surgeons Ashley and Chris, you’ll learn about some of the trials and tribulations they face. With situations of miscommunication, botched surgery and the inevitable death, this cleverly written story will have you chuckling, fuming and tugging at your heart strings. Cheering for the underdogs and waiting for the unravelling of the powers above this is a great read!

Ashley and Chris experience hospital politics at its worse in this novel. Coping with the stress of the job, dealing with death and external pressures, this book explores like as a surgeon for two junior surgeons.

I really liked this book, it was extremely easy to read and also extremely informative. Early on I learned the name of the laboured breathing experienced prior to death - Cheyne-Stokes breathing, which I never knew was named. It was brutally honest about the politics in some hospitals and how not every call made is best for the patient. Yet there is a sensitivity which explores the vulnerability of humanity - and how there can be so much life surrounding death. It’s well written and worth the read!

I gave this 4.5🌟

I was sent a copy of this book for review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook as it had equal amounts of laugh-out-loud moments involving the crazy shenanigans within Serenity Hospital as well as heartbreaking realistic life-and-death scenarios that brought an emotional side to the story. I liked Ashley. She was constantly being second-guessed and harassed by her boss yet even though it affected her mentally and emotionally she kept going and did her best for her patients which I think sums up the essence of a good doctor. It took a while before I warmed up to Chris though because I felt some of his behaviour was childish and irresponsible, yet he was celebrated within the hospital by his colleagues, especially the men more so than dedicated Ashley. I did enjoy Ashley and Chris’ friendship as they had each others’ back and cared about what was happening to the other within the hospital. They had very different perspectives on the job and the unfair treatment some staff received which made for interesting reading.

I loved the mad schemes that were created to try to get rid of the incompetent and chauvinistic head Consultant. It was fun to see how Ashley and Chris along with their supportive superiors hatched the plan to catch him in lies, bad behaviour and playing favourites with the men in the hospital. The description of the management structure was insane but working in an office for years lets me believe some of the weird and overly ridiculous policies that are in place in this fictional world could be real. I think that fact makes them even funnier.

The collection of patients ranged from sweet and kind to OTT nightmares. The latter often provided a lot of laughter and snarky dialogue. Overall the story was an entertaining look into hospital life even with a few outlandish embellishments. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Wow what a read. I really don't know where to begin with this read other than people y'all need to get this book this book has so much dark humor and it's perfect it laugh out loud funny at times. I couldn't or this down. I love that it really gives the behind the scenes of hospital life and what it's like for junior surgeons and what life is like for them. I mean I wish I would have went into the medical field I love it so much and am so fascinated by all of it. My mom once told me I should work with the dead o how I wish I would have listened to her.
I actually learned from this book and got some new terminology and learned what the labored breathing is called when a patient is dying!!!
I seriously couldn't get enough. I may have to go back and read again because it was just so good. I mean hospital life sounds rough and every job has politics I feel it's different in a hospital though because you are dealing with people's lives it's a life or death situation!!! More is at stake. Umm I need more from this author !!!

I have been trying to read outside of my comfort zone which is how I came to read Deadish. I did enjoy this one overall but I think it may be not be for me. I am not sure if it was the tone and while I appreciate this may be an honest outlook confirmed by my mother who is an ex nurse and theatre sister. Ultimately I did like the narrator since I had the audio version but I just couldn’t enjoy the book myself. I think part is the genre or setting as well.

It was still an interesting read non the less and I think people who enjoy medical dramas will like enjoy this one.

As always thank you to Love Book Tours for my copy. My review is always honest, truthful and freely given.

Well, after reading this one I’m a little concerned about having to go to the hospital! Marketed as a humorous, behind the scenes look at what goes on behind the scenes in hospital politics, I was simultaneously engrossed and horrified.

At Serenity Hospital a new position has opened and there are three contenders for the role: the third generation rich guy who paid to be there, the by-the-book, attention to detail girl who scrimped and saved to go to med school, and the maybe-an-alcoholic who is still a good doctor and worked hard guy. Morphine is going missing. Patient care might not not be top priority for management as they say it is.

The established surgeons on staff know who they want, but their ego-filled supervisor is intent on promoting for loyalty, not for skill. Cue the coup!

Filled with some banter, some medical tampering, hospital pranks, and a host of patients with a variety of issues including a hamburger problem, and the humor has found its mark. However, some of the story leaves me wondering what happens when patients are under the anesthesia and the doctors are left to their own devices.

Recommended for those who like hospital dramas, comedic relief moments, and even those who work in the medical field.

Full disclosure I listened to the audiobook of this.

This was the first audiobook I had tried, and I thought "Let's give it a go! it is humorous"

I do think that this would be a good read and have absolutely no doubt in my mind that people will find it humorous, I think with this book you have to have a certain level of knowledge about the medical field and hospital politics "as said in the title" I feel that me lacking in this meant that some of the humor was unfortunately lost on me.

I will say I could personally relate with at least one of the characters who was a bit of a prankster with his colleagues (on a completely different level to me but still) and enjoyed the creativity that the author had experienced/ conjured up with the pranks for said character.

Overall, I think the only thing that let me down for this was my lack of knowledge with the medical field, however, I have learned quite a bit from this. Including some new creative pranks 😉

Here is my review of Deadish by Alex Lancer

This book is a hilarious read and very funny so you laugh out loud in places. It’s a story about two junior surgeons Ashley and Chris as they work through their lives trying to get on the next rung of the ladder of being a consultant. It has some very funny anecdotes and real-life stories that shed light on what happens in a real hospital. It shows what junior surgeons have to contend with on a daily basis and that their lives are not all joy and roses, especially where management is concerned. I enjoyed this story as it is a humorous tale of hospital life of two likable junior surgeons who are trying to learn the ropes of being a proper surgeon and all it entails, like dealing with the public and operating on people. There is the bedside manner to consider, as well. I like the insights we are given to hospital life and the engagement with management. Also, the hours the doctors have to work. I like the true life elements we are given in the book and how these happen plus how they are handled. It’s a well written story showing how a hospital life is for junior surgeons and the life they lead in trying to get to where they are. Also, it shows how they are put upon by their consultants and always expectant to take over at a moment's notice. I did laugh at various items in the book as they were hilarious.

Blurb :

Humorously told with hilarious personal anecdotes and real-life stories that shed light on the eccentric things that go on behind closed hospital doors, Deadish is a delightful blend of dark humor and absurdism that celebrates the medical world while poking fun at hospital bureaucracy.
Rife with internecine warfare of office politics, medical misadventures, and stories told after one too many drinks, you’ll follow the lives of Ashley and Chris, two junior surgeons at Serenity Hospital, as they struggle with domineering management, awkward patient encounters, and unintentionally amusing events that make you want to laugh out loud.
As the pair fight to save their patients – and sometimes their own lives – they reveal the real human connections behind every story that give profound meaning to their hard work and sacrifice!
As a must-read potential patients, nurses, doctors, and anybody who wants to have a laugh as they gain a deeper insight into what goes on inside hospitals, Deadish is an absurd and hilarious read that uses black comedy to uncover the authentic stories of the medical world.

I was excited to read this book, and it was an enjoyable read that had me laughing and groaning in equal measure - just as it was surely intended to do. But, the author had the misfortune of bad timing with me.

First off, the writing is superb, and the dark comedy within the pages is top-notch. I've mentioned before I have a love of dark comedy that concerns me.

However, I am - and always have been - fat. I worked a lot, some of that work with doctors, on my mental health, and am a #fatliberation activist. We're taking the word back, but it still makes a lot of people uncomfortable. So, there are scenes in this book that make me uncomfortable and a little angry. Being fat is not as simple as medical professionals would like to make it seem, and there is a lot of science to back that up. It is also one of the few areas that society deems it acceptable to be incredibly unkind in the name of "helping" people and "humor." The incident in this book is extreme, ridiculous, and harmful. Other scenes are equally harmful to the trans community, as well as others. Even if these aren't the author's beliefs, many people will think they are because of their inclusion.

In the end, I think I was supposed to think the main character was a good doctor, and I can't entirely agree with that. But, I am neurodivergent, and sometimes I draw incorrect conclusions. Because I hope if this doctor is even remotely based on a real person - and I'll be honest, a doctor I met recently makes me think it's likely - I wouldn't let them near my healthy friends, much less a loved one in need of actual medical care.

The book does a great job of highlighting the horrible administrative issues in the medical system. But some of those might be protecting us more than we realize.

Who's It For?

If you enjoy medical dramas like The Resident, ER, Grey's Anatomy etc., you'll probably love this book. However, the main character is extremely abrasive, and has several very negative encounters with patients that are seriously problematic. These could be very triggering, so please check the content warning list and read the rest of my review to protect your mental health. And if you'd like resources on your own journey toward fat acceptance/liberation, DM me or comment below.

*I received a free copy of this book, with thanks to the author and Kelly Lacey of Love Books Tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

If you love the TV series Scrubs, you will love Deadish!

I felt so sorry for empathetic and caring main character Ashley, as her story starts with her accidentally declaring a patient ‘deadish’ to their grieving family and goes downhill rapidly from there. It’s lucky she has allies – her laidback, mischievous colleague Chris and some of the more experienced, more cynical, senior doctors – because the highly respected Dr Stone is out to get her (and Chris) sacked and replaced with his own cherry-picked choice. And one could almost think the patients were colluding against her, as everything that can go wrong immediately does.

Deadish is a darkly humorous romp through the backrooms of a UK (Glasgow) hospital in all its bloody and bureaucratic glory. We get to see behind the operating theatre masks, peep inside the lockers and staff rooms, and get an insider insight into what doctors say about their patients when the scrubs are off and the whiskey is out!

Consistently funny and equally horrifying, I found it hard to put the book down as Ashley and Chris bounce from one disaster to another, ably tripped along the way by the horrendous Stone (pantomime boos and hisses!).

I’m guessing that those in the medical profession will get the most entertainment from this novel, as I am sure they will instantly recognise many of the characters and scenarios, but for laypeople like myself it is simply an amusing, light read (and perhaps a convincing incentive to avoid medical intervention where possible… some of those anecdotes were terrifying!)

Where to start with this review!!?

Well, this was certainly a wild ride from start to finish and I spent my time feeling appalled, sickened, frustrated and absolutely dying with how absolutely hilarious this book was.

As I read through the first third, I have to admit to having a mild panic attack.
My son has a long term medical condition and for the last 16 years I've spent countless hours sitting in waiting rooms, consultant rooms and wards whilst he was in meetings or admitted due to being unwell.
As he was only a child, I was allowed to stay with him and so for many a dull hour, I had nothing to do than to overhear (and be privy to) staff conversations.

Some of the content of this book, therefore rang true - from things I'd heard. For instance the internal politics, hierarchy of the doctors, the bureaucracy, the endless paperwork, staffing (or lack of) etc etc.
But the author takes things even further almost to parody levels with this exaggerated narrative.

I loved the wide range of diverse characters and the dynamics between them all. But also the way that they all interacted with the patients and families and the different effects the job had on each of them.

This was graphic and dark in places but so, so funny in others. I totally recognised so much but was extremely glad that this took things to epic proportions with all the mishaps and botch jobs.
I loved the overall story arc which had a very gratifying conclusion.

A very entertaining book that might get you thinking, but definitely don't take it too seriously or you might never visit a hospital again!

As a frequent flyer of the NHS, I know all too well about the politicking and skullduggery that goes on behind the curtains!

I was completely absorbed from the get go with the storyline. It's actually based in an area of Glasgow quite near to me and therefore I really felt like I was running along Great Western Road with Ashley and Chris (metaphorically anyway, lol).

As a fellow 999 worker I see people like Professor Stone all the time. Glory Hounds but work shy, great at schmoozing but wouldn't leave them in charge of the tv remote control! The consultants on Ashley and Chris's side are more human than most that I've met!

I really enjoyed the way that Ashley and Chris are just friends, they are comrades in arms and that competitiveness between them is hilarious. Some of the patient tales are all too believable and I must admit I was completely sold on the whole "oceans eleven" heist type story weaving through the book. I actually thought it was quite comparable to some episodes of the New Amsterdam show. Yes, I had to suspend my belief that this would all happen in a hospital today but let's face it - bits of it possibly could!

If you ever thought that doctors and nurses just turn up and solve your problems with the click of some fingers, this story will soon put your right.

This book centres around Ashley and Chis, two Junior surgeons and the often hilarious events that befall their day.

Twisted in with incompetent doctors, hospital politics and rivalry, this is a brilliant account of how irrate patients and situations can lead to a string of LOL moments. As well as looking at a very different world to what we see as patients.

I do need to say that this is a book with #darkhumor moments guys, centred around death and illness, obviously purely fictional situations (let's hope) but still be warned.

I LOVED how this book got it name. The situation at the start with the 'Deadish' patient really set the tone for how these characters interacted and the type of humorous moments to expect.

Not wanting to give away too much, the jollity (what more can I say) continues in this way throughout.

There is no 'well that wouldn't happen' with this book. It DOES happen.

Another favourite moment was the doctored contact lenses situation of a disliked colleagueand where this led. Yes, you get a gauge of my humour right there.

Overall a great read. Not I'd guess for everyone, but if you have a darker more twisted sense of humour or are looking for a funny book to break up your comfort zone cycle, then I'd say give this a read.

I read this a part of the Love Book Tours review tour. All thoughts are my own

🎵...Queue music from... "Like a Surgeon" by Weird Al Yankovich... 🎵

If you know me, then you know, in addition to my love of reading, I love almost any and every medical TV show produced in the last 50+ years! You name them… M.A.S.H., ER, House, Scrubs, St. Elsewhere, Chicago Hope, Grey’s, Chicago Med, The Resident, I think I have seen them all. My latest read, Deadish by Alex Lancer, combined my two loves most perfectly!

I found it to be a quick and easy read for me, as Lancer has taken a rather light-hearted, yet satirical approach to his ‘slightly’ fictional tale of the inner workings of hospital doctors, nurses, admin, and even patients. I found myself drawn to the character Ashley, her predicaments, and ultimately rooting for her. Whilst I cannot quite agree with the blurb that it is “hilarious’, I did find myself laughing out loud at parts, for sure (but then again, I have been very fortunate not to spend a lot of time in and around hospitals). I think if you were to read this with the lens of a TV dramady (comedy drama), you'd like it as much as I.

Thank you to @alex_lancer and @lovebookstours for my gifted physical copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Deadish by Alex Lancer is a unique blend of dark humor and absurdism that takes the reader on a wild journey through the world of a hospital. The writing style may be a bit childish at times, but it adds to the charm of the story. The characters, Ashley and Chris, are relatable and endearing as they navigate the challenges of working in a hospital filled with quirky personalities and bizarre events.

The book is full of silly office politics, medical mishaps, and laugh-out-loud moments that will keep readers entertained from start to finish. Despite the humorous tone, Deadish also delves into the real human connections that lie behind the medical profession, adding depth and emotion to the story.

Overall, Deadish is a must-read for anyone in the medical field or anyone looking for a hilarious and insightful look at the inner workings of a hospital. It's a clever and entertaining read that will leave you both chuckling and contemplating the true meaning of their work - but don’t take it too seriously, I think this book will surprise a lot of people in different ways.

This is a dark, detailed, insight into the lives of those working in Serenity General Hospital, Glasgow. Focusing on junior doctors Dr Chris Newman and Dr Ashley Brown it is amazing to read about the difficult and frank conversations, the risks with surgery - infection, complications from “the unknown unknowns.” What stood out for me is the army of people involved in the day to day running of a hospital, tirelessly working with empathy, dedication, compassion and care for others alongside complaints, criticisms and the heat of the PPE. There are some funny moments, the fainter (that would be me!) and some poignant moments around DNR wishes and palliative care. The disinfectant, the bleach, the noise, the risks, the joyful news, the devastating news. Thank goodness for these people whose skill and experience we all rely on and trust, putting our lives in their hands, literally, at some time or another. This is a very entertaining book, just don’t read it if you are about to have a spell in hospital and lack a sense of humour!

The title of this book was what drew me in and when I read the blurb, I thought this would be a fun read. And it didn't disappoint. We follow two student surgeons and their day to day lives working in the hospital. This was a funny read with plenty of laughs, it didn't shy away from the dark humour, but this added to the story.

I was laughing one moment and getting annoyed with certain characters in another moment. Being married to an a+e nurse, I know a little about the politics of a hospital, how awful some drs can be, so reading this and talking with my husband was certainly entertaining throughout this book.

This book does deal with some dark subject matter, however the way it was written and the humour, made it an easy and fun read. I loved the banter between the characters and the sneaky ways on which the doctors behaved. I also took a lot of satisfaction reading about certain characters getting their own back! Overall a funny, sometimes heartfelt read, one which I certainly found to be an entertaining read!

Thank you to Love Books Tours and the author for the gifted copy.

Deadish takes place in a hospital in Glasgow, from the perspective of a couple of general surgery residents and attendings. It really highlights the politics that you see in a hospital and how sometimes it’s less about the patient and more about the bottom line.

Some of the surgical scenes were almost too technical, and a lay person without a healthcare background may find all this information going over their heads. But if you ignore some of the jargon (and I totally apologize to any of my non-healthcare friends, I know this is a problem—so many acronyms 🤣) you can still understand the story and how it affects the characters. Ashley and Chris were my favorite characters, both newbies trying to make it in their last year of training.

Sadly, some of it was all too realistic: the amount of alcohol and drug abuse amongst healthcare workers, the backstabbing and placing blame elsewhere, the egos involved.

Overall, Deadish was an entertaining read, but having a healthcare background was almost necessary to understand the nuances and jargon.

Humor, Dark Humor, Essay, Authentic Stories

3 out of 4 of my children have ended up in the medical field, so as soon as this came across my desk, I knew I had to read this (and so did my kiddos) Now, this book was written about experiences in the UK, but like I say to those who want to debunk things – lean into and enjoy a funny story. This is not a non-fiction book. This book explores things that happen inside of a hospital - internal politics, hierarchy of the doctors, the bureaucracy, the endless paperwork, nurses, lack of staff, etc. The author is making lemonade out of lemons. Medical professionals have a lot more to deal with than the patient. You will find Ashley and Chris endearing and relatable. This is clever, relatable and at times laugh out loud funny. If you are in the medical field, you will enjoy this and want to talk about it and compare stories!

I really enjoy tv shows or books set in a hospital, I find the dynamics and relationships fascinating, despite being fictional!
This is both a tale of two, almost fully qualified, surgeons who have to learn to work under the scrutiny of hospital politics, and the long game by their superiors seeking to oust a thorn in all their sides. What ensues is a mix of comedy, drama, and a real emotional rollercoaster.
Some of the medical scenes can be graphic or tragic, but many of them are lighthearted.
I couldn't put the book down, I started it in the morning and finished it in the evening! I just found myself totally engrossed.
By the end of it, you realise that there are no innocent bystanders in the hospital, and it's left open for future follow-ups should they be willing, but it's also concluded the main story in such a way that it could be a one and done.
I thought the writing style was clever and engaging, I'd definitely love to read more by this author.

✨ 4/5

A fantastic, humorous take on working in healthcare. If you’re looking for an accurate representation of working in healthcare this isn’t the book for you but this gives me huge hospital sitcom vibes! Be prepared - there’s dark humour but as someone who works in healthcare this is something I can identify with sometime the dark humour is what gets you through the day and bonds you with your team.

There’s definitely some elements I can associate with - there a big element of work place bullying throughout the plot and I think anyone who has healthcare employment experience knows how rife this can be so it’s good to see this portrayed and identified as an issue.

There characters were likeable and there were elements of their personalities and experiences that I could identify with. The hospital setting/routines did give me a bit more of an American vibe (assessed solely from my experience of watching American hospital sitcoms) rather than an experience of the NHS which didn’t quite fit for me as it’s supposed to be set in Scotland.

Overall I found this to be a great read. The humour hit the spot perfectly and I enjoyed how the characters worked together to overcome adversity. I found that some of their experiences with patients and relatives rang relatively true to life and enjoyed seeing how they responded to these situations.

" [...] All surgeons have an occasional disaster, not of their own making but simply because biological organisms like humans are fickle healers and vulnerable to infection, poor healing, allergies and inexplicable elements. [...]"

Wow! I didn't expect that when I picked up Alex Lancer's book entitled "Deadish" I would receive such an interesting and original comedy. I am delighted with the funny texts. It was the first time I read a book that shows the work of surgeons, nurses and their superiors in black humour.

Thanks to the author, I was able to participate in surgeries that were not always successful. Thanks to the colourful descriptions, I felt like I was taking an active part in the surgeries. I literally felt the blood on my hands and my clothes. A terrifying feeling. I felt the tension between the doctors. You can also read here how doctors react to complaints from patients' families. Does the hospital cover up such matters?

I met here, among others: Dr. Ashley Brown (her texts and thoughts are insane) - I loved operating with her, Dr. Chris Newman and Dr. Jeffrey Cavendish III. It is also worth mentioning Professor Stone. And of course the students.

I invite you to Serenity Hospital. Literally anything can happen here. Are you ready for it?

If you like humorous novels about surgeons, then feel free to read "Deadish" by Alex Lancer. Good fun guaranteed.

The author writes in a language that every reader can understand.

I like the cover of this book. The large letters in the text make it easier to read.

Alex Lancer, good job.

The title of this book caught my attention straight away. There was something comical about it.

The narrator was absolutely fantastic and really drew me in with the characters. The tone was perfect for the topic. There was an easy to follow pace which kept moving and didn’t drag.

The actual book is a wonderful mix of humour, sorrow and ‘that can’t possibly be a real story’!

There are moments that are difficult to hear and be warned that this is an element of gore and death inline with a medical setting. But the over riding feel is of humour and supporting each other in your team (even if it’s at the expense of someone else)

I would definitely recommend this book at anyone who has in interest in the medical profession or who wants a gritty , humorous and possibly honest look at life in a hospital.

This was like reading a season of Grey’s Anatomy! That’s exactly how I envisioned all of the characters in this book in my head!

I absolutely loved the witty humour and banter between the colleagues in the book. Some characters were definitely more likeable than others! Some of the descriptions of the surgeries made me feel physically sick… loved it. The burger scene! Ewwww. The description throughout was fantastic and at some points I felt like I was there with them in the operating room and could smell the blood! It was also quite scary and eye opening to read some of the discussions that go on about your life when you are lying on the operating table and your life is literally in the surgeons hands!

This was a fun read and it is perfect for fans of hospital/medical programs!

This was a great humourous read, with some great characters. Set in a Scottish hospital, the two main characters are surgeons who are trying their best to work for a promotion surrounded by incompetent doctors, patient complaints and allies that are up to some skullduggery. I loved the medical dark humour and even though some of the parts seems a little far fetched I reckon it's probably closer to the truth about what goes on in hospitals as you may think. The book had a bit of everything, humour, drama and a bit of mystery towards the end. I thought the characters were great, Chris and Ashley were completely different people…well at the start anyway!

Have you ever wondered what doctors actually think when they see you? Or wondered what they think about when you’re lying on the operating table? Then this is the perfect book for you. Full of humour and hospital politics it really gives you an insight into the difficulties of working in such a high pressure environment. As someone who has been in hospital a lot I found the banter between the doctors really amusing. The writing really flowed and the mixture of characters was great; some I really liked some I definitely did not. It plays out like an hospital TV drama. I also loved that it was set in Glasgow as it’s somewhere I know really well.

I was first drawn to this book by the fantastic artwork on the cover and the intriguing blurb as this is not my normal genre. However I am so glad I opted to read it as I really enjoyed the dark humour. I will definitely be looking for more books from this author in the future.
