Book 2 of the duet, you need to read it in sequence.
We pick up shortly after where we left off in book 1 and spend all of book 2 dealing with the fallout.
This book continues in a 3rd person perspective so where we had Sean, Jasper and Brit in book 1, we have those same characters to follow and we add in Evie as the outsider watching Brit and Sean deal with each other and their relationship.
This one is a slower burn and definitely contains more mind bending moments. As with the first book, I spent a lot of the story not knowing where we were going, what the destination was going be (it has to have an HEA, but what will that look like?), or how all the various pieces would fit together in the end. I was very torn on whose side I was on, Brit: the victim who was trying to exorcise both her new and her existing demons, or Sean: wanting so much to be there for Brit, to help her heal (physically and emotionally), but had a very hard time listening and understanding what that looked like in Brit's eyes.
The audiobook was performed in duet style narration by Angelina Rocca and Gary Furlong. Angelina brought all the emotions to Brit that tied me up in knots. Pain, guilt, desperations, rage, frustration, fear... they were all so real. She also did a great job with the cold detached perspective of Evie the psychiatrist, observant, watchful, and confusing at times. Gary's performance took me all over the place in my feels. Sean is caring and protective (sometimes to a fault), he's frustrated and confused (Brit doesn't open up as much as he wants her to) and he's also torn up over the situation feeling guilt, responsibility and remorse (very much misplaced). But the real part that made me shiver was anytime someone interacted with Jasper. At times this character made me physically ill. The way he's written, the way he communicates his thoughts, motivations and reasoning behind what he did and what he plans to do if given the change... very unsettling.
Please be aware that this story does deal with some upsetting topics in the aftereffects of a traumatic attack. Please be kind to yourself if you are sensitive to these topics.
I requested and was provided with an advanced copy of the audiobook. These are my honest opinions.
