Review for Not What I Expected by Jewel E Ann

Jewel E Ann, you really touched deep into my psyche with this one. I needed this book, especially now when so much of my life is turned upside down. I felt Elsie on so many levels! I’m just so grateful you wrote about a woman in her 40’s finding herself after having given so much of herself to others. I loved how beautifully imperfect she was! I adored her ability to honestly look deeper and know she wanted more and had the courage to go for it, even when it scared her. And Kael...free spirited, living in the now, open and honest Kael! Though Elsie’s junior by 12 years I found him to have the wisdom and grace of an old soul. He had the charm of youth but the mindset of someone much older with such calm and kindness. Together they were magic that had me skipping meals and reading straight through the day to the end.

Not What I Expected was exactly that! It wasn’t what I was expecting and I got so much more! I went into this book thinking one thing would happen and I damn well should’ve known better with Jewel E Ann. She successfully sets my emotions through the spin cycle with every book she writes. I burst out in laughter, swoon uncontrollably, feel the angst in my gut and close every book knowing exactly why she’s one of my absolute favorite storytellers.

Kandi Steiner can write words like no other. This book has all the feels. From one minute you're biting your nails wondering what's going to happen next, then you're laughing along with the characters and in the next minute you're crying your eyes out wondering how things will end up.
Noah Becker is a real charmer. He's a family man, he's true and loyal to those he loves, and he works at the local whiskey distillery. He's the perfect book boyfriend.
Ruby Grace Barnett isn't your typical nineteen-year-old. With a father for mayor and a fiance going into politics, she doesn't live the normal life as she should. Noah is the only one to notice this about her, to call her out on her BS, to tell her that her wants and dreams matter.
I love these two together. With many ups and downs and arguments, when they finally came together it was like fire!! I was so giddy reading this part!! And that ending, OMG I couldn't believe how it ended, but I'm assuming we'll see more of them in the upcoming novels.
This book is everything. It has a real small town country feel to it and I love those settings in stories. I'm so excited to read the rest of the series and learn more about the notorious Becker brothers.

Review for Not What I Expected by Jewel E. Ann

Not What I Expected is a different kind of book than we’re used to from this author and I absolutely loved it. In fact, I didn’t just love it, didn’t merely read the words and enjoy the story, I felt it deep inside. I related so much to Elsie that parts of her story took my breath away. I needed this book and when I realised just how much, I teared up. I don’t think I have ever felt so deeply about a story, on a personal level, as I did with this one, or highlighted as many passages or sentences, simply because they resonated with me. I felt as though this author climbed inside my mind and read my thoughts. I felt both exposed and understood. It was almost like therapy!

Here we follow Elsie’s journey through many changes and adaptations in her life and Jewel’s insight into those challenges and choices is remarkable. It’s quite an emotional and poignant story at times, with Elsie realising that her marriage has come to an end. As a result, she needs to redefine herself and I was so pleased that this author gave Elsie the courage and determination to reach for that new life.

Not everything is easy of course and Elsie makes mistakes, but I love the way the story is so well balanced as a whole. It acknowledges individuality and offers a suggestion, an alternative to the normal response if you like, that if something in your life doesn’t last forever it doesn’t have to mean that it’s a failure. Elsie isn’t closing one book and opening a new one, she’s finishing one chapter and starting another in the continuing book of her life. Kael, the free spirit, the old soul in a young body, was just the right person to come into her life when he did. He was there, giving her a little nudge in the right direction, persistent but not forceful or overbearing. The complete opposite to Elsie in almost every way, he brought some fun and sexiness into her life.

Jewel has a great sense of humor, so of course it’s witty too, hilarious at times, but when you also ask your readers to give you their pet peeves when it comes to their husband’s irritating behaviours, you can bet there’ll be some true to life laugh out loud moments.

Not What I Expected may have been exactly that as far as the story is concerned, unexpected, and I adored it. I really should’ve known to expect the unexpected when it comes to this author. Her versatility and ability to shock and surprise are a couple of the many things I love about her. I also admire her philosophy on life that, (and I’m paraphrasing here), “We should strive to make the world a better place, with less judgment and blame, more understanding, acceptance and love, of ourselves and others”. And with this book she goes some way to showing how that’s possible if we’re open and want it enough. Thought provoking and filled with humor, emotion, love and hope, this is women’s fiction at its absolute best. This wonderful story, and especially how it made me feel, will stay with me forever.

Not What I Expected by Jewel E Ann 5 stars

Life after forty with Elsie Smith. She had Three kids away at college and a senior in high school. She has Not yet reached the empty nest lifestyle, but she’s only a few months away from it.

After twenty-two years of marriage and four kids Elsie is ready to start a new chapter in her life. From Elsies perspective she feels unappreciated by her husband having no self worth for having raised a family. Craig tuts around like the king of the castle defining his role in life as the sole provider. Elsie just wants to be appreciated.

Overall:
Jewel E Ann weaved all those little idiosyncrasies into ideal locations planting both the arguments that it caused as well as the reaction. I felt like Jewel was describing my marriage. Each one of these statements and reactions played out like a movie reel reminding me of troubled times.
This trip down memory lane is like rereading my journal regarding all my grievances. I’m laughing eventhough in some ways it’s quite sad. Individuals behave differently and our tolerance change as we grow. It’s the reaction, judgement, and labels that really get stored away. This build up is what causes the eruption on Elsie’s control. Just when Elsie comes to terms with what needs to change, her life gets turned upside down. With friends, family, and the community available to support Elsie she begins to find herself.
Confession of a woman. There really needs to be a support group for women to vent about all the little things that bother them so they can laugh and share ideas on ways to deal with it.
Let’s talk about age gap. Love when a young guy likes older women. It’s hot.
I love me some Jewel. Who else writes these wonderful nicknames? His name is Kael but she referred to him as the vegetable-named gawker. Rolling with laughter.
Usually I shy away from small town gossip story’s but once again Jewel turned this small town into a fun experience by outing the truths. Rather than gossip about others these woman unleashed years of honesty that most deemed uncouth to mention to others.
She had me at feisty. I’m a sucker for feisty witted sassy talking female characters. Jewel is at the top of her game when writing my favorite female characters. Her male characters are pretty spectacular as well.
I’m telling you Jewel wrote this story for me or it’s about me in some small way because I relate to these characters.

This story is a story of life.....growth, pain, heart ache, love.  Its a story of finding oneself, and finally be able to see you.  The real you.  THE YOU, YOU WERE MEANT TO BE. 

If what you need is a story of laughs, love, family, friends and a few great eye opening moments, then this is the book you need. 

Elsie, so many times I wanted to yell at her, make her see, make her understand she mattered in this life.  But as in life she had to realize it herself.  She had to see I MATTER, I matter more than just as a mom, just as a wife, I MATTER to myself.  We all get there in life, just some of us take a little longer.  All that matters is you get there.  That alone was a HUGE message in the book. 

The story is a beautiful life lesson to all who reads it.  See yourself, be yourself, treat yourself.........be kind to yourself. 

Kael, WOW where the hell do I begin on that man.  Wise beyond his years...... his experiences in life made him question his life, shake things up.  Kael was one of the best book boyfriends out there without actually being a boyfriend.  LOL 😆   I totally feel hard for him.  He made me squeel on more than a few occasions. 

I love that Jewel takes her stories out of the box, plays with them a little, rolls them around....and pushes them.  To me Jewel always give us food for thought in her characters, her stories, her messages.  She makes me think, makes me feel and expands my mind. 

An amazing read from an amazing writer.

At first this was a hard book to read and an extremely hard review to write. Normally I want to scream at JEA for killing my heart but not this time.
This book is everything.....I mean everything. It made your heart feel and your mind really think about everything. I don't even know where to start with this book and like most JEA books she leaves you in some sort of book trace. When I first started this book I felt like I was in church and the preacher was stepping on my toes because I too have had moments of doubt about a 27 year marriage. It was like JEA was in my brain and writing my story. And that can be scary and after the first few chapters I thought this might be the first JEA book I don't finish (the toes were beginning to hurt). But I pushed on and I'm glad I did because Elsie's life took a lot of different turns that I'm not sure I would be brave enough to make. Elsie is a strong women who eventually decides to stand on her own and to be her own person. This was confusing at first to her family because they had never seen this new side of her. Elsie has many obstacles to face and she needs to figure out just who Elsie really might be in this next chapter of her life. To me this book is different from any other book JEA has written because it has more truth in it then worrying about that wonderful HEA. In Not What I Expected you get a woman's truth and exactly what the title said - NOT WHAT I EXPECTED.

Jewel does it again with this wonderful story!

I felt this story and the words down in my bones and in my soul! Being an older woman this story resonated with me on a very deep level that is really hard to explain.

It’s a story of wondering if there is more to life and one woman’s journey into discovering it. I really LOVED Elsie and commiserated with all she was going through and also enjoyed how she eventually overcame her guilt at wanting more for herself and going for it. She’s my new hero!

Thank you Jewel for an absolutely wonderful and soul stirring story. You will always be a hero to me with the stories you give us and the emotions you make us feel while reading them!

Otterly Irresistible by Erin Nicholas- Loved it!
If I could give more stars I would! Griffin is a grouchy veterinarian who just wants to take care of the animals and stay to himself, but the citizens of Autre, mostly the Landrys, aren’t going to let that happen. Charlotte is determined to make him smile and maybe if she’s lucky enough a whole lot more will happen between them. Absolutely loved this first book in what promises to be another terrific series. Can’t wait for more.

Simply put, I loved it. It was fantastic. Kael and Elsie were amazing. I think Elsie was one of the most real characters I’ve ever read. This book had so many layers to it, and I loved every single one. It was perfection.

This is an incredible collection for those who love small town romances. I have previously read Otterly Irresistible by Erin Nicholas and here is my review: I loved this book so much! This book gave me all the feels I could ask for as grumpy and hot, Griffin and quirky and sunshiny, Charlotte (Charlie) fall in love. These two take you on quite a romp as their dueling personalities clash with their very much matching desire for each other! So yes, you can expect plenty of sparks but also tons of humor, sweetness, small town charm and boatloads of the zaniness that the beloved Landry family brings to every book they appear in. Toss in some drama and a rock solid base of heartfelt genuineness and you have yourself a book that will steal your heart and make you eager to return to this bayou again and again. I can't wait to enjoy the rest of this collection.

So far all I've read is Otterly Irresistible, another amazing story by Erin Nicholas, which is a “can’t put down” story. This story exemplifies the genius that is Erin Nicholas and her writing; pulling the reader in when a super hot, grumpy, vet meets a sunny, sassy happy, optimist and lots of cute, adorable animals. This opposites attracts, small town romance contains animal attraction and antics.

Griffin Foster, a wildlife veterinarian, is done getting attached and trying to save the world. All it’s gotten him is fired twice for staying up for what he believes is right. Now he’s living in a small town in Louisiana and working at a small veterinary practice where there shouldn’t be too many major problems. Oh wait, he’s been adopted by a loud, crazy Cajun family and has a tiny petting zoo for him to care for. It might not be the endangered tigers at a national zoo, where he used to work. There is a family of otters he’s become attached to and a goat who stalks him, and all the gumbo he can eat. A life Griffin can be content with. At least until she shows up, again; the sunny, beautiful, optimist who stole his heart, and his favorite shirt, two months ago. A woman who doesn’t accept “no” for an answer and the first woman to put even a tiny crack in his don't-get-attached wall. A woman he had an unforgettable one-night stand with and who Griffin enjoys arguing with.

Charlotte "Charlie" Landry has become the new marketing consultant for the family swamp-boat tour company and petting zoo after losing her job in Paris. It might not have been her plan, but she is all in, ready to grow the business. No matter what the hot, grumpy Griffin thinks. No longer wearing her designer dresses Charlie finds a dream job working with a bunch of goats, alpacas, and otters; even adding more animals to the petting zoo. Charlie is finding it difficult to resist the magnetic attraction and off the charts chemistry she shares with Griffin. Working with Charlie awakens the missing passion and love for life Griffin lost, awakening feelings; being unable to resist her. Totally irresistible.

Ms. Nicholas creates characters that are appealing, magnetic, sizzling and ready for some action. Once again she outdid herself by writing an amazing story with a hot, grumpy hero and a heroine in need of finding her way in the world that fits her, that should definitely not be missed. This is a tale rich with emotions, sizzling chemistry, sassy and charming characters, supporting Griffin and Charlie on their journey for finding everlasting love and achieving all they desire. I highly recommend Otterly Irresistible to other readers and look forward to the next book in this series.

She is smart, sassy and absolutely delightful and he can’t resist her brand of crazy, sweet and fun!
Charlie is one of those characters that you can’t help but love. She is charming, loves her family and is finding a way to seamlessly worm her way under Griffin’s skin and there is just something about her that he can’t say no to as much as he tries to do so.

On the Rocks is the first book by Kandi Steiner that I have read and wow, I am now a big fan!
I enjoy her writing style, her characters are well developed and the storyline has the perfect amount of interest and intrigue to keep the pages turning!
There was just something about Noah and Ruby’s history of growing up in a small town, each wanting to find the love they saw between each of their parents. They are both young but love knows no bounds and the heart wants what the heart wants.
The story gets interesting when Ruby returns to town already being engaged, but not to Noah. They not only have to try to keep their relationship in the ‘friend’ zone but there are so many secrets being kept and deals being made behind Ruby’s back that Noah is the only one she feels safe with. Those secrets, however, are the one thing that can tear them apart.
Kandi has also done a great job building up the supporting characters so you know that there is so much more to come and I can’t wait!

My rating is based on the following books: Truth or Beard by Penny Reid, Stud Muffin by Jiffy Kate, Landslide by Kathryn Nolan, and On the Rocks by Kandi Steiner. I read and enjoyed these four books long before I acquired this anthology. When I consider them, along with my knowledge of the other authors included, I can confidently recommend the bundle as a quality romance read. I look forward to reading the remaining eight books.

Review for Any Luck at All by Denise Grover Swank and A.R. Casella which is a stand-alone in the Asheville Brewing series.

The description of this book being an opposites attract romantic comedy couldn’t be more spot on, as this is exactly what the story is.

The chemistry between Georgie and River radiates off the page, and you can’t help but be drawn into their love story. The character development is well written.

I’m looking forward to reading the other stand-alone books in the Asheville Brewing series.

Great stories all in one!

Enjoyed all the individual books in this one. Have to be honest that it took me probably close to two months to get through it, but they were all so good! The downside is I only get credit for one book with Goodreads when I actually read 12! Lol!

a great collection of funny, quirky swoony books

Otterly Irresistible - 5 stars ——- This is the first book in the Boys of the Bayou Gone Wild series. I love a book that includes a happy, sunshine and quirky girl and a tortured grumpy hero and oh this book has that in spades. Plus there are otters who have heart to heart talks with our hero! This book has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, fan your face steamy, side splitting hilarity, tearful scenes, a big loud over the top family, truckloads of cute animals, and so much heart squeezing love. Griffin and Charlotte (Charlie)’s love story has all the feels - expect to laugh and to cry. On the surface, Griffin and Charlie appear to be opposites. Griffin is a vet who was fired from a prestigious job at the national zoo and landed in small town Autre, Louisiana sharing a vet practice. Griffin just wants to be left alone, wants to have limited interactions with people, and wants to just take care of animals. Charlie is a gorgeous, loud, vivacious big thinker who rarely hears the world no which is good since she works in marketing. Griffin and Charlie have one quick sexual encounter at a wedding, where only first names are exchanged. Charlie then goes off to work in Paris and they assume their paths will never cross again. Unfortunately, Charlie is fired from her job and comes back to Autre to do marketing for her cousin’s tour business and be the p/t assistant at the vet practice, co-owned by one of her cousin’s wives, a vet practice also co-owned by Griffin, and that is where the hilarity really begins. On their way to their HEA, Griffin and Charlie have to both learn a lot about love, family, duty, and embracing who you are. While they follow the inevitable path to being together, it is painfully hilarious to watch their growth and missteps. Sprinkled liberally throughout this beautifully paced story of Griffin and Charlie’s HEA, there are also a number of characters from the author’s Bayou Universe in this book. I will be forever picturing Griffin’s put upon face from whatever antics Charlie has dreamed up now. I cannot wait to see what’s next for the Landrys and the rest of Autre.

Stud Muffin- 5 Stars —— I loved Tempest and Cage’s story. Both of them are getting a life reset. Tempest because she caught her lying douche bag of a husband cheating on her with her worst enemy and she kind of let her crazy out afterwards. Cage because he’s learned that his MMA fighting days are over due to his last injury so he takes a job as a bouncer in Tempest’s tiny town thinking it’ll just be a quick stopover. The heat between these two is off the charts but the emotional connection is as well. Together they help each other heal and see a path forward individually and together. It’s a crazy, quirky, swoony wonderful journey full of strong characters and deep storylines. Plus the muffin names are just fantabulous.

Any Luck at All- 5 stars ——. This is the first book in this series and is a wonderful story full of friendship, family, quirky characters, drama, silliness, misunderstandings, and love. Georgie, one of the Buchanan siblings, has unexpectedly inherited the Buchanan Brewery along with her three siblings from her grandfather. Georgie, has just sold her famine products company for multi-millions and needs a new project. So she and her half-brother, Jack, decide they will try to run the brewery rather than sell it once they meet River, a talented brewmaster who just lost his job when his best friend sold out Fresh Catch, another local brewery. River and Georgie are drawn to one another but there are stipulations in the will that overshadow their fledgling relationship. On their way to their HEA, while trying to get Buchanan Brewery remodeld and reopened, River and Georgie have to balance their employee/boss relationship along with a no-fraternization clause, deal with evolving and shifting family relationships, and move past each of their trust issues. One of the best parts of this book is the quirky side characters and a scary cat. These secondary characters are central to what makes the story so wonderful. I am excited to read what’s next for the Buchanan siblings and their brewery.

Hard Pressed - 4 stars ——- This was a sweet, funny and swoony small town tale. Annette is the bookstore owner in her small town. She has an unrequited crush on one of her customers who is a reclusive town resident. When she finds out he is gay, she decides to drink her embarrassment away. Unfortunately, her drunkness and lack of keys has the sheriff taking her to his house to sleep it off. Which leads to a drunken strip tease and attempted seduction and more embarrassment. Jackson is the sheriff and new in town. He has been attracted to Annette since he first saw her. So the drunken strip tease was hard to resist. The inner self-effacing monologue about being attracted to her ankles is ridiculously wonderful. As is the rest of the storyline.
