a compendium of philosophical thoughts from the past two millennia, brought together in the words of the philosophers whose work has changed our understanding of ourselves and the society in which we live. These are quotes that will inform, inspire, and entertain. Accompanying commentary explores their meaning and reveals the life and work of the philosophers who said them.
Gareth Southwell is a writer, illustrator and philosopher who lives in South Wales in the UK. He has a PhD in death, which has been read by exactly four people (including himself). His first novel MUNKi is just a thinly fictionalised version of this, with most of the boring bits taken out and replaced with robots and people swearing in Welsh. Sign up to his monthly email list for news, views, and free stories from the MUNKi universe. A very good introduction to major philosophical ideas and philosophers. Each quote is visually displayed on the left page and a commentary about the quote takes up the right facing page. I appreciated that non-Western philosophy quotes were included and commented on. Women philosophers were also included, which is excellent. I read, on the average, one quote a day as a "meditation" (I always like to have one of these sorts of books around for that purpose). The explanations and commentary are clear and get the essential message across, although, a reader might need to explore some of the concepts by reading other material at times. If you're interested in philosophy and just want to be introduced to some major ideas and people, this is a good little book to dip into or read from cover-to-cover.
