The Traitor Spy left off with the Dagger of Orias being found, a foiled assassination attempt and Kenna's family being debt free. Unfortunately, Kenna isn't free. The Prince of Stone still owns her and expects her to spy on the Prince of Shadows.

Kenna is immediately in deep deeeeep shit. After paying off her family's debt, Kenna has depleted her secret stock of money that was meant to buy her freedom. Desperate to be free, Kenna foregoes blackmail for straight thieving. And as we all know, Kenna isn't necessarily built for thieving. Her instincts and talents lie elsewhere. A bounty is released for the thief who is stealing from the nobles, Kenna has to now evade being caught by her own friends.

On top of that, the Prince of Stone wants Kenna to spy on the Prince of Shadows while being the Prince of Shadows spy for the Prince of Stone. Messy, messy, messy.

Things go from bad to worse when Kenna is caught being the thief and betrayed by someone she trusts. The Prince of Stone demands restitution, and that causes Kenna to decide to risk it all, by running. With no money and no where to go, she finds herself at the one place where she should feel safe and protected. Kenna went home. Home is however, not a home anymore, but a house that her family lives in after saving them from destitution. Her family are not happy to see her, nor in any way helpful in her new circumstances. Kenna is once again forced to leave the only home she has known.

I had been betrayed by everyone I held dear. Sold out, cast aside, like I meant nothing to them. Like I was nothing.

Kenna hits rock bottom. No family, no friends and nothing to live for. She is a runaway slave, with no money, no place to stay and no solutions. If anyone recognises her, she will be dragged back to the Prince of Stone in chains.

My heart broke for Kenna. She has always been so supportive to the people around her and was everyone's go-to when they needed help. She was self-less, with such a huge capacity for love and acceptance. The one time she finally asks for help, they all turn on her. They decide she is jeopardy them. A liability that they can simply cast aside and cut off. It sucks reading Kenna lose everything. Loose all the things she has worked hard and risked everything for. To be ostracised and disowned. I won't lie and say I wasn't as teary as Kenna was at this moment. Rock bottom hits Kenna hard, fast and brutally.

Kenna is brought to her lowest. She is homeless, on the run and broke. She has no family and no friends. What she does have is her intellect, skills and gumption. With all that, what could possibly go wrong??

Picture it. One alley. Two hostages. One girl who can walk through walls. Kenna does what she does best, and scares the living crap out of them. In exchange, she finds shelter, friendship, and hope.

Kenna recognises that all that energy that she was using for other people was not conducive to her goals. She was putting everyone else's needs above her own and she isn't doing it anymore. This betrayal has opened her eyes to her relationships with the people in her life and how she was never put first. Sometimes pain begets change.

As an avid Marion Blackwood reader, I have established a theory .
Theory:
When (almost) every scheme/plan works, then the last, most important scheme will fail (and vice versa).

Meaning:
In the context of The Wicked Betrayal, almost every plan and scheme doesn't work out for Kenna, but then the last, and most important scheme is successful.

Is this theory full proof? No. If you look at other Marion Blackwood books, you will see the same pattern and I'm a sucker for a pattern. It remains to be untrue but I challenge you, dear reader, to apply this new hypothesis and come up with your own conclusions.

As for this book's conclusion, it was amazing. I loved it. Kenna deserved a win and it was well-deserved one. The sneaky metre was at 100 and I lost it when she actually got away with it. Kenna finally felt in control of herself and her circumstances. She established she wasn't to be messed with and that she had the intelligence and skill to ruin your life if she chose too. I hope she ruins a few peoples lives in the next few books because they deserve if for betraying her.

Would I recommend this book?
Yeah I would recommend this book/series. It's low fantasy with great characters, funny banter and shocking scenes.
I would probably tell you to read Marion Blackwood's first series The Oncoming Storm.

Will I continue reading this series?
Yes 100%.

Will I re-read this book?
Yeah I would. Marion Blackwood is a favourite author that I would go back to again, and again.

So this book started out slow. But obviously, with everything that happened and Kenna’s feelings, I expected it.

Marion has a way of making you feel like the actual character. It’s as if you’re the one that’s going through everything and I find that amazing. I absolutely love Kenna and how strong she is.

Kenna and Mordren… please tell me they will kiss or SOMETHING! The angst, banter and tension between them is hot.

Thank you to the author, Marion Blackwood, for providing a copy of Wicked Betrayal (Court of Elves book 2). I have reviewed honestly.

Wicked Betrayal features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ YA fantasy
○ Blackmail
○ Schemes
○ Kickass FMC
○ Elves
○ Anti-hero
○ Courts and royalty

My overall rating for Wicked Betrayal is…

4.5 Stars!

What an exhilarating sequal! I was so excited to step back into this exquisite world of Elves, court life, blackmail, schemes and sass; Wicked Betrayal did not disappoint! I loved the fierce Kenna in Traitor Spy, but she certainly reached a whole new level in this book with her elaborate and unexpected schemes and her snarky personality, all the while being faced with a multitude of hurdles. I'm still looking for some romance to be introduced, but the seduction and flirting kept me sated... for now. Overall, an exciting and dangerous tale that kept me on my toes.

I did not see that ending coming! I will say that I’m a bit over Kenna putting faith in the wrong people, stop blabbing, haha I mean she’s meant to be a court spy, cmon lady! But once again I really enjoyed this fantasy book, can’t wait for book 3

I received an ARC copy of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

Well, here we go, another series I’m hooked on. I totally expected it though, given the skill Marion has with crafting a story and it’s an addiction I don’t mind having.

Kenna is back and can’t seem to keep herself out of trouble nor from biting off more than she can chew. Just when she thinks she’s figured a way out of one predicament, here comes another!

As she always does, Marion weaves a delightful tale, giving you just enough details to think you know what’s going to happen then WHAM, here comes that plot twist that inky makes sense in retrospect and has you wondering how you missed that!

I love the feeling a release from Marion gives me. Anticipation, happiness, giddiness. If you could capture the joy of reading in a book, Marion masters it every time.

Can’t wait to see what else is in store!

This was such a binge read for me; I loved this second book in the Court of Elves series!

I really enjoyed experiencing Kenna's journey through the betrayal and hard times during the book. Her reactions and the timeframe for her development flowed well with the pace of the plot unfolding. The deviousness was so much fun!

I soooo wanted some more scenes between Kenna and Mordren but my fingers are crossed that we get some in the rest of the series! Their chemistry is hot and playful and NEEDS to be explored more!!

The word 'wicked' seemed a little over used in the book and when describing a character, and a lot of the chapters ended in the same dramatic writing format but these things didn't take away from the enjoyment and I am excited to see what Kenna does next! So much scheming!

The Wicked Betrayal picks up where The Traitor Spy left off, following Kenna as she desperately tries to buy her freedom from the Prince of Stone.

Marion Blackwood is a fantastic storyteller, and yet again Ioved every second of this book! I loved the scheming and the plotting in this book, the main character Kenna really outdid herself in this sequel.

Some of my favourite things about The Wicked Betrayal:
- Prince of Shadows, obviously 🔥🔥
- Kenna's determination and scheming!
- Marion Blackwood's detailed descriptions

I have once again been left waiting ever so patiently for the next book in this series, hurry up The Beautiful Liar!

Let me summarize this book in two words: absolutely amazing. This was an absolute masterpiece full of schemes and plots, and Marion has certainly lived up to the standard she set with her Oncoming Storm series (which if you haven't read, read it, now).

Kenna goes through a lot in this book. Her emotional trauma is relatable - after all, the we've all been betrayed by someone. The emotions she showed are real, and are really hard to deal with. It's realistic and honest.

This was a pleasure to read, and I'm ready to dive into Kenna's next adventure!

Kenna har to fix the mistakes that happend in the Traitor Spy but that's not so easy. She is betrayed by people thats close to her. (if you want to know who, you have to read these books! 😉)

What are you suppose to do when you're heart broken?

To fix everything she has to do her biggest scheme - bigger then the ones she has already done! She has to take on the Prince of Shadows - Mordren Darkbringer. But he has done these kind of schemes too for a lot more years.

————————————

I was hooked from start and couldnt stop reading it! (now I'm in a read slump) 🙈

So well written! And now I want the next book so I can know how she will fix her next problems and how she is going to live her life after all thats happend!

Thank you to the author for a copy of the eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I'm really enjoying this series so far! It has all the things you need for a book to be addictive: snarkiness, schemes, betrayals, and romance. While I did want to see the book delve more into the romance, we were warned this was a slow-burn so I know I just have to keep reading for more.

This was a really good sequel to The Traitor Spy and I liked the character development we saw with Kenna. She's honestly such a fun character to follow. I love the sarcasm and the way she comes up with all her plans. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Kenna grows as this series continues. I can't wait for book three to come out!

Full disclosure, I received this book prior to release as part of the ARC team. Since we're all being honest here, I do recommend reading the first book in this series, Traitor Spy, prior to reading Wicked Betrayal. Now that you're fully apprised, onto the review:

Well folks, she's done it AGAIN. And what else would I expect from Marion, honestly? She has conquered the skill of showing - not telling- which is threaded throughout this entire book. She's also mastered the balance of feeding her readers delicious details while still allowing us room to weave our own assumptions along the way, without leaving us confused from lack of information.

If you're looking for something to put you to sleep; this is not that book.

If you enjoy spending your limited time reading books that leave you bored, dissatisfied or disappointed; this is not that book.

BUT, if you're looking for something that is twisty-turny, pedal to the medal, entertaining, gut wrenching, heart breaking, laugh out loud funny, slow burning (quickly wipes glasses on shirt to remove steam), mind teasing, and will keep you up into the wee hours of the morn' because you have to find out what happens next; look no further. You're home.

The fiery, blackmailing and wickedly clever MC, Kenna, as well as her allies, adversaries, and everyone in between will have you hooked from start to finish.

If this sounds like your type of book then don't waste another minute reading this review. Go. Click. Read. You won't regret it.

Kenna is back and if we learned to like her in the first book here we are really falling in love with her witty personality.
I was constantly biting my nails, rooting for her, laughing out loud, having tears in my eyes, it was a rollercoaster of emotions. I am totally invested in this story, and I hope I'll see many more badass moments from our favorite blackmailing, scheming heroine (?) :)

Oh, how I have missed Kenna. This was a quick, bingeable read that I highly enjoyed from beginning to end! It’s the second instalment within a new fantasy series filled with courts, thieves and royalty.

The continuation of the storyline was smooth and very much intrigued me. Deception, manipulation and blackmail were highly involved themes which all kept me addicted but betrayal was the biggest! So many wicked betrayals occurred in the plot which kept me entertained and on the edge of my seat with anticipation. I also really appreciated how a light mental health aspect was involved for realistic inclusion as it made me emotional from relatability.

The writing flowed beautifully and was easy to read which I always appreciate.

The characters were well developed! Kenna is such a realistic heroine especially with her rough mental struggle in the beginning but I admired her strength and ability to blackmail as well as the intelligence it took to create her elaborate schemes that never ceased to amaze me. Morden was cunning, dangerous and arrogant with smart power plays being everything I’d expect a Prince of Shadows to be. The new side characters who were introduced being Valerie and Theo quickly warmed my heart with their friendship and support.

The romance was minimal however I’m anticipating more scenes between Kenna and Morden as their game continues because the chemistry between them is all consuming with a playful tension that is addicting.

The ending held a twist which made me cheer for Kenna. I’m very interested to read her next journey in the following instalment soon.

Overall, I enjoyed yet another adventure this author has created. HIGHLY RECOMMEND to fantasy lovers looking for something with heists, tension-filled dinners, gangs, revenge, action, schemes and a shadow prince that’ll intrigue you till the end.

Kenna

"Let me know when you have time for me then." Manipulative Monette.

Getting a little bit of that background that I needed in the first book. The spies are "secrets," and to everyone else, they were simply "courtiers," 'like the rest of them'.

She has a "wicked smile" way too often, and it just seems out of character. The only time she seems a little "wicked" is when she's with Mordren... and that would be fine, but she's not even "wicked" in her narrative, so it's always a little surprising.

Goodness, her family is awful. After Monette's betrayal she has no one. Well, Felix helped her.

Her stepfather admits she wasn't taken. She was sold. "Because you're a constant reminder of my wife's indiscretion." Her mother: "I had to send you away because I couldn't take one more day of having the worst mistake I ever made literally follow me everywhere I went... I wish she had never been born." Wow, mom. Brutal. I hope Mordren is somehow monitoring her and hearing this and will somehow have compassion on her. This is the kind of girl who needs a man who will call her 'mine'.

"I had decided that I was never letting anyone else in ever again."

Hmm, this will definitely be found family for her.

"Hey. I'm sorry about your family." After she loads it out on him. This will be the appeal - he sees her. And shows her compassion. Not pity, but understanding, maybe. Visibility. He sees her.

About 2 hours left, and I realize how much I like this character even though I still don't know that much about her. Not a lot of details. But I feel for her, and I want to see her succeed and find belonging.

I do like how there's this almost playfulness between her and Mordren. They see each other as equals in a way, even though they aren't. They're not equal in status, but they're equal in playing this game that they enjoy, and there's a mutual respect that comes with it. Like, they could both do something to end this game, but they both want to keep playing, so neither takes that step that would end it. She even admits it, "I love playing this game."

It just came to mind how small this world feels so far compared to the Oncoming Storm. Granted, it didn't really get bigger until book 3, but I think by this point, it already felt bigger.

I really don't know what happened with this series. Why the author chose to make the details so much more lacking than the Oncoming Storm. Was that one her baby and this one just to push out another story?

The scene of Theo fake stealing something from Mordren, and the ensuing chase was fun.

I like the idea of her being in his court. It would make things so much easier for her.

Her "betrayal" was tricking Modren into buying her freedom. It was good and because he's a good sport and finds her "interesting' it made more a good resolution. She's free now.

Enjoying. Not loving, but enjoying and I want to keep reading. Book 2 was better than book 1, maybe a tiny bit more focused. 4 because I enjoyed it.

Ranking:
-Book 2: Her family admits they sold her (she wasn't taken). She's all on her own. She meets Valerie and Theo. She plays games with Mordren and he plays back. She tricks him into buying her freedom from the Stone Prince. 4
-Book 1: Intro to the story. She helps her family pay off a gambling debt. Evander, her "mark" is secretly a spy for the princess who attempted to kill the King. 3.5

“When will you learn? Every time we play, truly play, it will always end with you on your knees before me, begging for mercy.”

I’m literally forever amazed by this author’s writing skills. This book, this story and these characters completely own me and my heart! This is the second book of the “A Court of Elves” series and so far this is my all time favorite Marion Blackwood book! The plot was so well done and the character development is PERFECT!

These characters are absolutely to die for! Kenna is now one of my all time favorite characters and officially my book girlfriend! She’s such a badass and has such a strong personality and I felt so connected to her in this book! And her connection with Mordren! I am sensing a very strong knife to throat enemies to lovers and the slowburn is killing me and making me love this story even more!

I don’t have enough words to describe how much I loved this book! It had everything I look for in a fantasy and so much more. The plot is so fast paced, full of action and absolutely addictive! The writing style is so beautiful as always! This is one of my all time favorite authors and her books definitely deserve so much more hype! Please go read this series! You will thank me later!

Note: Thank you to the author for sending me an early e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

I loved this book so much! The Wicked Betrayal is book 2 in The Court of Elves Series that follows Kenna in her struggle to gain her freedom from the Prince of Stone while trying to stay one step ahead of others that want to see her fail.

As the story unfolds she gets betrayed on a (in my eyes) unfathomable level. Now here’s where things shifted for me, “watching” her try to handle the mess of emotions of why and who betrayed her was so damn relatable. The feeling of becoming numb, not wanting to acknowledge the pent up feelings threatening to drown you, is something that others have faced before. Having gone through hard times myself I still struggle with my feelings/thoughts and do “shut off” and suppress my emotions rather than face it. So watching Kennas emotional struggle with everything and fight to overcome it was inspiring honestly. It added to the uniqueness of the story on top of the mind blowing scheming and badass fighting, which I’m officially saying is Marions specialty. Her books never fail to surprise me when things are revealed and fall in to place by the end of the book.

So in summary this book is a perfect blend of revenge, depression, hope, determination, and refusal to surrender. I love these characters so much, and can’t wait for what’s next.

“We always protect our friends. No matter what.”

Closely following the events involving the dangerous dagger, Kenna finds herself in serious trouble. Without enough money to free herself, she continues to blackmail the citizens of the Court of Stone and makes a plan to obtain a large sum of money. Unfortunately, her plan involves taking down the dangerous prince of shadows, Mordren.

Mordren Darkbringer, who is absolutely obsessed with power and winning, is determined to make Kenna surrender to him.

When the Court of Stone hears about the thief within their court, one of their spies is sent out to investigate. Kenna, unfortunately, faces multiple betrayals, and is forced to run. Her plan to take down Mordren needs to happen, and soon.

The Wicked Betrayal was such a fantastic sequel to The Traitor Spy. I, once again, was enthralled by the world, plot, and characters. I found it refreshing to read a book that dived deep into the emotional side/emotions of the characters. While Kenna has proven to be a strong woman, she also experiences very difficult situations, that cause her to break (and build herself back up). Overall, I loved every second of this book and the series so far. I am eager to continue this series and see what’s in store for Kenna and Mordren.

Once again, Marion has shown that she has the skill to write an epic tale of lies and deceit all wrapped around a few grey characters that are full of depth and layers (puts on my best Shrek voice * Like an onion*). She has a way of writing scenes that bring out all sorts of feelings and memories!

Kenna is back in this second book of The Court of Elves, still with dream and ambition of freeing herself from her contract with Prince Edric of the Court of Stone.
Betrayal comes unexpectedly and forces her to move up her timeframe as well as up her game against Mordren, the Prince of shadows.

A book that takes the reader through a range of emotions, from indignation for Kenna to outright sadness, excitement that will keep you flipping pages and shoving any adulting aside so you can finish reading!
If you haven't yet started on this awesome series, I cant recommend it enough! Get out there and grab a copy already!

More of the same Jude and Cardan from Wish. I still feel absolutely no chemistry between the two main characters and when they kissed I just skipped ahead because it was too random. She had more chemistry with the freaking Void than the real love interest. Also, if “The Void” knows everything going on everywhere then why didn’t he know about Kenna running away? He was not in this book at all until the very end and then for just one scene. Also more “this happened off screen and aren’t I smart cause I tricked everyone” bull shit. It’s so annoying that we can’t fix the issue WITH Kenna. Just a bunch of random Scooby Doo style “ah HAs!” at the end of each book. I have a perverse desire to finish the series and that’s just because I’m more interested in the Prince of Stone than any other characters actually in the book.

I loved the sequel even more than the first book!

Kenna is a little vicious thing, far too smart for a pretty spy. After being betrayed not once but twice by people she thought she could trust to, Kenna runs away from the castle and hides in the city slums. While it seems her life is ruined, Kenna finds new path and new friends who help her to restore faith in kinship. Kenna is far from losing hope to gain her freedom, and she decides to stage a reckless coup that would guarantee her succeeding in her plans.

I love Kenna as a character who made a speedy development from a naive person being used by her family and friends into a merciless viper. I am so excited to read the rest of the series and discover what Kenna has prepared for her enemies as a perfect cold revenge! Oh, and her banter with Mordren is so deilcious, I can't wait to see the development for these two!

Winner takes it all.

I admire the storytelling of this author. She lures you into a false sense of reality, but then twists happens and you don't see it coming. Playing the game when you have very little to lose makes you fight that much harder. Kenba is shocked by the betrayals, finds genuine friends, and plots her revenge. Mordren sees it as a fun challenge, but the game has real consequences if Kenna loses. It reminds me of a chess game, the strategy and planning moving three steps ahead. The undercurrents of sexual tension add a further spark to the contest of wills between Kenna and the Prince of Shadows. I enjoyed the battles and intrigue A game not for the faint of heart, and I was not sure who I wanted to win at times. A series worth reading if you enjoy courtly drama, betrayals, and redemption

If you haven’t read Traitor Spy yet I highly recommend you add it to you TBR list because you will get swept away in this world!

The Wicked Betrayal is the second book in the Court of Elves series and was everything the title promises and more. Following Kenna once more, our favourite morally grey elf is, as the title says, betrayed again and again and again. And once more for good measure.

Like Marion’s other works this was fast paced, page gripping and with twists and turns that leaves you shouting out aloud. Marion has a way with words and a wicked mind that drags you in and won’t make you want to leave! I’m already desperate for the next book. I can’t wait to read more of Kenna and Mordren and to see what happens to familiar characters!

OMFG! I loved this book.

If you haven’t read the first book in the Court of Elves series (The Traitor Spy), head out right now and read it

Wicked Betrayal picks up where Traitor Spy leaves off. We’re back with Kenna the half-elf, desperate to buy her freedom from indentured servitude (aka slavery) to the Prince of Stone.

I can’t give too much away without spoiling the plot, so I’ll just say that in Wicked Betrayal, we have all the snark, action, heists, plotting, magic andand the super-hot, Loki-esque Prince of Shadows we had in Traitor Spy…

BUT…

This time, life serves Kenna up with a mighty middle finger. The world as she knows it is torn apart and she struggles to find a way to put the pieces back together. Those scenes ripped my heart clean out of my chest. .

Nope, I am NOT giving anything away.

I was lucky enough to be given an ARC from the author and I can’t wait for the next book.

(Yeah, I’m very late with my ARC review due to life, the universe and probably the number 42).

If you love Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series, then I’m pretty sure you’ll like Wicked Betrayal, too.

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

In this book we still find Kenna scheming to buy her freedom from the Prince of Stone. Similar to the first book, there is betrayal, scheming, and nail biting moments. The slow burn relationship between Kenna and the Prince of Shadows is ridiculously delicious, and leaves you wanting more! My heart broke for Kenna in this book for what she went through, and cheered for her when her scheming plans paid off. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book. Ms. Blackwood has done it again, and given us an exciting, fast paced, action packed, and delightful read!

What a ride this book was! I love love it!
The character development was no doubt the best part about it! I'm trying not to spoil it but those few chapters in between just broke me and had me crying. She didn't deserve it and the way she handled herself was quite alarming but at the end she did made through it. That's what I'll always love about kenna!
Have I already said that the sizzling chemistry between Mordren and Kenna is too hot to handle?! Because it totally is!
Mordren and Kenna challenge each other so well!
The plot oh my god! It was soo soo good! It kept me on my toes to see what Kenna or what Mordren will do now!
Please read it!!!

Each book gets better!

This book was frustrating. The main character, kenna is manipulated and used by those who are supposed to love her, and she doesn't recognize it. I like a strong female lead so I wanted to smack her to wake up. I got emotional when she finally realizes the truth and deals with it. As I am reading I kept wondering why her schemes to win always lost. Definitely worth reading to find out why!

In this follow up to Traitor Spy, Blackwood answers all the lingering questions I had. Particularly in regards to Kenna and what drove her in her family loyalty.

When tragedy and betrayal, she struggles to pick up her broken pieces, but with the help of some new allies she finds a renewed sense of self.

Absolutely a fantastic read to watch Kenna navigate the next hurdles in her quest for freedom.

This book had me filled with anxiety for Kenna. I couldn’t put it down, I read it in 1 day it’s such a page turner. Our heroine is up to her old tricks and has acquired some new ones. Watching her relationship with a certain prince unfold had me on an emotional roller coaster. The story and world is wonderful and I’m counting the days until the next one comes out.
