Detective Inspector Rajiv Sampath still believes he can make a difference.
Fifteen years ago when he joined the Indian Police Service as a fresh recruit, he was full of big ideas and pure ideals about how he could make the world a better place by upholding the law.
Now, after years of working in a world that seems to reward dishonesty and self-interest, he could be forgiven for turning a blind eye.
But he won’t give up.
Follow Inspector Sampath as he does whatever it takes to make sure justice is served… even if sometimes he has to skirt the boundaries of the law.
Mark David Abbott was born in Cyprus but spent most of his formative years growing up in New Zealand. A love for travel has meant that he has spent much of his life living and working in different countries around the world and currently calls India home. Mark has worked variously as a barman, a factory hand, supermarket shelf stocker, and a real estate salesman, but now devotes his time to writing and traveling. Mark is a keen runner and in between runs is slowly building an impressive collection of Gin.
A great novella that gives those of us who are readers of this author's 'John Hayes' series a look into one of the characters we have come to know. He is an honest cop in a world where honesty itself is seen very little, where people are most often trying to get all they can for themselves, but Detective Inspector Rajiv Sampath believes that doing the right thing will persevere against those who do wrong. A quick showing of several cops doing the wrong thing, while Inspector Sampath attempts to right the wrongs. I enjoy this author's writing, clean and crisp and gets the story across in a pleasant way
For those of you who have never been to this wonderful country the novella may seem far stretched regarding the life that millions of Indians have. Believe you me, as a seasoned Indian traveller who loves the country and its people the author has merely scratched the surface of Indian corruption. When they changed the bank notes chaos ensued among politicians as they tried to explain about having millions of rupees they had managed to 'save' on a small salary.
In this short story an honourable policeman tries to right the wrongs of his colleagues and look after the usually downtrodden working class victims. Realism oozes through the passages and I commend it as a short inro to his work.
In the interests of honesty I will admit that I got a free copy but I say things as I see them.
This is my first book from this author and I can certainly say it won’t be my last. This is only a short story but it sure does have an exciting plot. The characters are easily imaginable and you can relate to actually being there watching what’s taking place. I found it to be well written and the story flows extremely well. Great book. I received this book from the author and I wanted to leave an honest review.
A complex, suspenseful plot with tension so thick that it felt palpable. Wonderful characters with depth and substance. I was immediately drawn in and held captive from beginning to end.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
A novella featuring Inspector Rajiv Sampath from other novels by the author. He is a good and honest police officer fighting corruption in the police and political ranks. Mark David Abbott always gives you an exciting novel.
'Impact', a novella by Mark David Abbott featuring Rajiv Sampath, the police Inspector introduced in the first book in his 'John Hayes series, Vengeance', as he continues to wage his personal war against the corruption within the police force. Detective Sampath was one of the standout characters in Vengeance, and this opportunity to explore the character further is a superb gift from Abbott. The novella is a short read yet contains the depth and descriptive prowess of the author's full-length novels. I highly recommend this tale to lovers of exceptional crime fiction.
This story started out with an accidental death and the families "IMPACTed" by it. The police investigation and details therein. However, when Detective Sampath appears and gets involved, the story changed. While I was interested in the original tale, I enjoyed the change even more. I love how this turned out.
I hope the author will write more with Detective Sampath, and I will certainly read some of his other books as well. I also enjoyed the author's voice as the reader for the audiobook.
A quick introduction to Detective Sampath. It reveals some of the corruption which is endemic to the Indian policing system. We learn little about Sampath, but certainly start to get a flavor of the environment he works in. We certainly get a very positive introduction to him and his motivations.
A great introduction, in a well written novella, to a man of principle in a corrupt system. Further tales of Inspector Sampath should make for great reading.
This little novella is okay. Not very gritty for police stuff but I guess it's supposed to introduce us to the character in the subsequent novels. Easy to read but lightweight.
This was a very short but great reading. Hi can't wait read the next book in this! It's always amazed me when any book is an a family and their daily life!
An interesting introduction to Detective Rajiv Sampath. A Fifteen-year veteran of the Indian Police Service who still feels he can make a difference among the corruption and dishonesty that abounds within. This was a great story and fun to read about policing in another country. It is also a short introduction to explain the uselessness of the police service and the John Hayes series which begins with the novel Vengeance. I look forward to reading more of these stories.
It's a sad day indeed when those who are meant to uphold the law and protect the innocent, instead use their position to extort those with very little. It gladdened my heart to see that someone was prepared to try and put a stop to it.
I received a free copy of Impact: A Detective Sampath Novella from the author and have chosen to leave a review.
A very good short story, however the last chapters need some further fillers as they don't show/ say how the victim of police corruption got his money back.
I like how the detective goes above and beyond the job of dealing with all types of crime

Brilliant short novella - great characters, kept me reading until I finished. Well told story, would certainly be looking at other books by this author. 5 stars.
It didn't matter who ran into whom, did it?? The only thing was, who was still alive that could pay Money!!! I enjoyed this story and recommended the book.
A Detective Sampath Novella by Mark David Abbott, Impact is a charming, yet thought-provoking story, set during a relatively average week in Sampath's life. After a drunken labourer's accidental death he takes it on himself to provide moral and financial solutions to the victim's family and to the other one involved, who are also struggling to get by. Practical justice indeed...just don't tell his boss!
