Must read

Once I started reading the book I couldn't stop until I finished it. Referenced actual real places and has you thinking if some of the story is based on true events.

Excellent story

A very well written story set in Oklahoma. For those who live in or around rural Oklahoma this is a awesome tale with lots of nostalgic nuggets that any Oklahoman would appreciate. Good balance of humor, action and humor in a outdoors setting.

This is a very intense book, and it starts off that way and rarely lets up, but that gives the book some of its power. The main character--an older teenage boy--gives the story the rest of its power. The teen is a complex, compelling character, one of those rural males raised to know what to do in the wilderness, how to hunt, fish, and shoot, and build his own fire and shelter. All of those skills will come into play.

I think two promos by the author say it best: "Some days, the wrong choice is all you have." And "For some people, childhood ends in an instant."

Bottom line: this is a riveting, well written story of survival and endurance and it will keep you turning the pages. It has some of the same haunting quality and suspense as "Deliverance" by James Dickey has in the book.

What an outstanding novel. “A portion for Foxes” refers to Psalm 63 in the Bible and the story roughly parallels the story of David running from his enemies in the wilderness. It is carefully and deliberately crafted and you can tell the author put years of effort into writing the book. The characters are so vivid they almost seem real, and the narration of the audiobook is outstanding. It is a very entertaining and engaging story, and I highly recommend the book to anyone high school age and older!

Excellent book! It has me glued from page one. If I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it and what would happen next. I am lucky enough to know the author and hear about the making of this book and I think it just made me love it more. I look forward to reading more of his books!

This book was awesome. It is very well written, and it pulled me right in. It's not a happy book, but it's such a great story that I'd give it an A+.

The story is believable and seems like an honest account of things that could happen. Lots of introspection, but plenty of action.

Interesting coming of age story, but I wasn't too surprised by the plot.

This is a good book about good and bad people. Threats to life, belief in God and Friendships.

Just ok for me. It was a common theme. The middle seemed pointless. I just did not think this was grabbed my attention. Boring at times and hard to keep reading.

I gave this book five stars because it is well written. The survival descriptions are excellent. I would caution the reader that portions of it are NOT for the faint of heart. Many of the events I would not approve of as they are not acceptable in our society, but that does not mean they do not happen.

Once you begin reading you will be likely be hooked. What will this young man do after witnessing the slaying of his buddy? Revenge is a dangerous thing.

Will he seek revenge?

Will his actions cause problems he can not control?

Where and when will it end?

I enjoyed the writing, which flows along nicely and offers really vivid, seemingly effortless descriptions. The story itself falls a bit too flat a bit too often, though, and I found myself waiting more than once for things to get moving.
