This is an imaginative and fun read, more about ideas than characters. This is a retelling of the book, Children of Another Bible, with an added piece of the story titled The Pax Neandara, both by the same author. In these stories, there is the sense of the other whereas the title of this reveals the focus is really on Kulkuz: Angel of the Neanderthals. At the heart, this is a story of ideas and ties back into classical literature such as Machiavelli's The Prince and to me, Dante's Inferno, regarding the in between of life and death. It's a story of intolerance of the 'other' in this case the Neanderthals, who with Kulkuz's help, spread their essence even among humanity. (Strangely and I don't know if the author was/is aware of this there is some evidence there is a small percentage of Neanderthal DNA among modern humans from certain parts of the world.) This book is more about ideas than developing characters. I found it frustrating at times when a story line became interesting and then jumped away. I was glad that it came back together before the end of the book. Perhaps because I hoped to learned a bit more about the mysterious Kulkuz (and I get it that she consider the Neanderthals her children), my rating is 4 stars for I found the ideas very interesting. However, I never connected with Kulkuz and found myself far more interested in the human characters.
