Far From Their Eyes is a collection of essays, short stories, poems, interviews, and artwork from people with connections to Ohio and to migration. The anthology provokes connections across cultures, borders, languages, and time, for readers who are open to seeing them. Because we are all just people, with equal worth and dreams.
I found a certain poignancy in “The Accent” (“When they push on, that is when they get the story behind the accent.”) If we would only take the time to hear and acknowledge each others’ stories… “We are all just people, with equal worth and dreams”
I was deeply moved by the stories and poetry shared in “Far From Their Eyes, The Ohio Migration Anthology, Volume 1.” I definitely identified with the African-American who came north (Ohio), escaping the oppressive conditions of the south, seeking better jobs and more opportunities … that’s exactly what my family did. But I also felt a common bond with the other writings that depicted the need to flee from certain geographical places, to escape the horrors of war, the Holocaust, and more in search of hope and a better life in a new place. Interestingly, “Hope” was the Underground Railroad code name for Cleveland, Ohio so I’m sure there are many more untold stories and I look forward to future Volumes.
