The Other Realm #2

Glimmer of Hope

Rate this book
I’m Jinx, a run-of-the-mill private investigator … except I’m also a walking, talking lie detector. Oh, and I belong to magical realm known as the Other.

Murder isn’t usually my gig, but when I’m hired to investigate the death of a dryad called Reggie, I agree to help out because I know his grieving widow. It should be an easy case to crack, a mugging gone wrong, but the murder scene photos show it was anything but. Reggie’s death has all the hallmarks of my parents’ murders so I’ll stop at nothing to finding his killers. It’s so important I’d even be willing to tag in Stone to help – if I could find him…

Reggie was into some bad stuff involving a drug called Boost. Take it, and you play Russian roulette because either you get high or you die. As the drug claims another victim, I find myself with a new sidekick who is determined to fight its evil influence and he just happens to be the king of the dragon community.

Now I have two deaths to solve and one suave dragon king along for the ride.
I need to find Reggie’s murderer.

I need to discover who killed my parents.

And I need to keep my distance from the charismatic dragon Emory, who refuses to take no for an answer…

Another fabulous rollercoaster ride with mysteries and storylines that are inclusive of smiles, laughter, eye rolls and tears!
I did not expect Jinx to take the path she has and it definitely appealed to me but now there's obvious potential dilemmas for her to face...
Gato... just no words but a hell (pardon the pun) of a lot of love!
I love this series so far and the next novella and book are both ready to read ❤️

This is second in an Urban Fantasy series and depends on the events of the first to setup the plot in this one. Definitely read them in order. Also, avoid this review for first-book spoilers if you're sensitive.

Having read the first, you know most of what to expect with this one. I was interested to get the confrontation with Stone after the ending reveal in the first book. I thought I'd be more impatient than I was, however. I mean, we don't get actual confrontation until near the end, but I enjoyed Emory taking Stone's place as the romantic focus and I honestly like him better. His interest in Jinx is a bit random, though, so that sits poorly.

I found I didn't care as much for the mystery driving this one as I did the first. So I'm not sure if the twist was as juicy or if I just wasn't paying attention. I suspect the latter.

And I think I'll leave it there. As much as I like Emory I'm calling this four stars because he's just a bit too opaque for me to buy his interest. I still love the tone, though; it's serious-enough for the mystery plots needed, but Jinx has a lightness to her that I kind of adore.

A note about Chaste: Like in the first, there's lots going on not a lot of downtime. So we get a great make out scene but nothing more. I consider it quite chaste, really.

It always takes me a little while to become accustomed to the author's writing style, but once I do, it flows beautifully. These books are my ultimate comfort read, I have yet to find anything that is as easy to get through. You can just chillax and enjoy the ride.
"There was fine dining," he pointed out.
"Pasta in a limo," I countered.
"There was passion," he continue like I hadn't spoken. "Dancing, drinks."
"There was murder, mayhem and mutilation."
"As I said, fun."
I don't often use the word spunky - but that's what Jinx is. She's a brilliant character and her adventures are always interesting. This time, she is hired to investigate a dryad murder that is somehow mixed up with a new magical drug. She teams up with a sexy business man slash dragon to track down the culprits.

Critique
I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get more closure regarding Stone, but I'm excited to see where Jinx's love life goes next. I also guessed who the bad guy was pretty far in advance. I thought the hints were a bit too obvious (but I do tend to be that annoying person that guesses what happens next in tv shows).

Hopes
I'm really hoping we get to see more of Nate! I want to know more about this bond. I thought it might go somewhere romantically but alas, I seem to be wrong 👀 I absolutely cannot wait to be re-united with my favourite characters! Whatever goes down, I'm here for it.

Overall
I highly, highly recommend this series. It's so fun, entertaining, and unique. I'd definitely recommend that you read the prequel in between book one and two! It made a lot of things make sense here.

I was an avid thriller/mystery reader before I got hooked on fantasy and that's literally the only genre I've been reading these past 15 years! I was delighted to have found this series, which combines all the reasons I love fantasy, with a good dose of mystery/thriller! Best of both worlds comes together with such panache, such a brain teaser and magical beings in a brilliant way. And it's such fun! I loved book 1 but book 2 is even better. The opening sentence, oh my word, what an opening sentence! I have to admit, Jinx is a character I so easily fell in love with. She's sharp, snarky, takes no nonsense from anyone, and her inner thoughts are so humourous. From her reaction to the Other world in the previous book, I knew I had found someone I could totally relate to, or rather, aspire to be! See? That's MY fantasy setting in, that's how great Heather has written Jinx, that I want to be her! And golly do I want me a Glimmer! The coolest danger in any Realm! Always there whenever Jess needs it.

Things start to get a bit... complicated in the romance department in this book, first she has the attention of Detective Stone, then she forms an unexpected a bond with Nate, who's a vamp and a cool one at that and then she sparks the interest of none other than the dragon king himself! And I confess I was drooling at all three, although, Emory had the edge for me, he's suave and charming and relentless in what he wants, and he's so darn sexy! I adored the banter between them. One of my favourite characters is Lucy, gorgeous, smart, a true friend and in love with the wrong person.I gotta mention Gato! He's a hellhound I'd love to meet! My word is he awesome! What he does for Lucy is just beautiful. There is no doubt that the bond Lucy and he share is ultra special. So too is this book, amazingly even better than book 1, we get to see how Jess adapts to her new world, we get to see her PI skills in full force and her people skills too. Well, dryads ARE people too, right? She just always seems to know what to say at the right time, it's her compassion and sense of right that makes her so likeable, so genuine and everyone can see that. Ok, maybe not everyone, there are those that are self serving, those that are on the lowest rung of humanity.

Once more Jess solves a mystery, a murder, this time drugs and murder go hand in hand. The revelations fierce, really fierce! What Jess discovered HAPPENED to her threw her for a loop, especially what lord Samuel kept doing, but that you'll have to find out for yourself.... I loved getting a glimpse of Amber, stoic, almost hauty in attitude but so so cool. I know there's more under that facade. I love how the author keeps us guessing, I'm always shocked at the whodunnit. And the ending, oh my word what a mind spin! It's a real skill to be able to keep me glued to the pages while theories race around my head, tantalising clues sprinkled throughout but it's only as the pieces fall into place, do I see full picture. The action is heart stopping, tense and very realistic, geez, when Jess confronted the unicorns, hells bells, my hair stood on end! Astonishing storytelling! I can't wait for the next chapter in this saga, I almost feel like a Vampire who's meal has just escaped, my fangs are out and I'm ready to plunge into my next "meal". The anticipation is very tangible, bring it on, Heather!

Welcome back to the world of the Other, where everyone's favorite Private Investigator Jessica Sharp AKA Jinx can tell when you're lying from a mile away.

Glimmer of Hope is a pivotal moment in Jinx's life, where she begins merging her human and magical life to find an awkward but familiar synergy. When an old friend seeks Jinx out for assistance with a case that bears a striking resemblance to her parents' murder, Jinx knows she can't walk away.

The author had Jinx on such a precarious moral precipice. As Jinx becomes more ruthless with her killing in the other, I couldn't help but feel as if she was slowly losing pieces of herself and her humanity. I found myself asking, "How far is too far into the grey unknown?"

Aside from her moral dilemma, Jinx served us some highly comical yet extremely relatable inner monologues that had me wheezing with laughter. While we saw some darker shades of Jinx, I was pleased to see it perfectly balanced by her sassy smack talking and her refreshing honesty!.

Heather Harris knows how to play her readers and just when we fell in love with Jinx's first love connection, he was brutally ripped away from us, setting the scene for the delectable morsel that is Emory.

Emory, to me, represents everything Jinx desperately needs to get out of her funk- sexual tension so thick you could cut a knife through it, combined with a dominant alpha with standards and manners who is not afraid to challenge her or speak his mind.

Spoiler alert- Never before has removing blood felt so sexy, I honestly enjoy that scene where an innocent clothing swap turns HOT !!!!!!

Of course, knowing the author, Emory will probably turn out to be an even bigger loser or something infinitely eviler, but then again, that's where the true fun lies don't it? Being strung along in one direction only to be painfully ripped into another. I relish authors who lead me on merry chases only to break my heart and give me a broom to sweep it up.

It would be remiss of me to pen this review without paying homage to the most badass pup to navigate realms, Gato, the supernatural protector, power source, and impeccable bathroom skills.

I enjoyed how all the loose ends of the previous book have come together but still manages to leave me guessing with the dual plotlines, especially with the vampire connection with Nate.

As always, the writing was superb, the world-building was ingenious and the characters stole my heart while making me laugh. Very rarely do I find joy in reading paranormal due to saturation and I am pleased to have picked up this series.

Thank you to the amazing Heather Harris for asking me to read and review her book.

Another fun and low stress read with lots of action and no dull parts.

Jinx is hired to find a murderer and finds that there was more than one person murdered...
She has yet to hear from Stone, the enigmatic investigator, but she does meet another enigmatic sexy man. Not really a love triangle though. There's no real competition.

Jinx is constantly learning more about 'the Other'. Her trusty companion, Gateau still has her back. Her circle of trusted friends is small but slowly getting bigger.

These stories tend to get a little OTT and I would be happy with just a regular murder mystery. But I still really enjoyed myself and find myself going quickly from one book to the next. These books are addictive!

Safety is good and still a very clean read.

FL/ Jinx:- Our private investigator is back but now in Liverpool. Only briefly. Because a murder has taken place and she is hired to find the killer.

ML/ Emory:- a dragon Prime, who has lost one of his dragons to a street drug called boost. He hires Jinx too to solve the murder.

Review

I don't know how to rate this book.

Mostly because as a reader you become used to having more knowledge than the characters. Because you see all. And then you have pre-conceptions going in and read the plot in that light. But Heather basically jolted us out of our stupor and gave us new developments, which I don’t even know how they sidled up! But here we are. And here I am.

Do I like this development? I am neutral about it. I would have liked more warning so I could have rooted for Emory, because let's be honest, he is a better choice.

Still, I'm miffed.

It also felt like Heather changed the direction of her plot abruptly because she didn't like it anymore for the second book. Like first with Stone and Emory. And then with Liverpool and in a few pages having her back where she moved from—her home county.

Anyhooo, I liked the plot itself. So I might keep reading ahead in between books to keep myself up to date.

I'm really enjoying this series. Glimmer of Hope is the second book in the Other Realm series. I loved returning to Jinx's world of vampires, werewolves, dragons and crazy adventures.

Jinx is hired to investigate the murder of a dryad in the Other. As she begins looking into the murder, she finds similarities into the deaths of her parents. She hopes that finding the dyrad's killer will also uncover her parents' deaths.

I've grown to love the world of the Other Realm. This book introduces a few new characters as well as more about the magic system. It was intriguing and immersive. It had a little more romance than the first book and I was all for it. It was a great reading experience!

Another magical re-read or listen, as it is this time.
The magical realm has the same issues as our mundane world. Murder, drugs and all the other terrible things that break people's worlds apart. Jinx has been hired to solve a murder. A dryad's murder.
Jinx is a woman after my own heart, saving wild beasty animals at her own peril. Taking on snobby Wear wolves and making her way through the general craziness that is the other.
We learn more about the world of the others, meet more of the unique denizens. And just have a ball in this second book of the urban fantasy series.
Highly recommended, totally addictive and once again Alyse Gibbs has an amazing talent for narration.

It's official boys, I'm Team Emory all the way. There's just something about that man/dragon that does things to me :p

I really enjoyed this read, it was a barrel of fun. I really like Jinx and watching all the relationships she forms with everybody she meets. I really don't know what to think about everything happening with Stone, he feels a tad OTT compared to the last book but we move. The baddie in this one was pretty predictable but it didn't really take away from my experience any. I'm very much looking forward to seeing what comes next!

SO much fun! This books is a mixture of UF and Mystery, with a bit of romance thrown in. Just my cuppa!!

I’m glad Jinx went a different way where love is concerned and the new prospect is yummy! Again, no reason is given at ALL for the instant attraction from the male POV and that is really annoying. What is it that makes Jinx so irresistible that every powerful being instantly falls for her?!? Still, I won’t complain too much because the book is just so fun! It has a light, upbeat feel to it, while still dealing with all kinds of death and intrigue. I know… oxymoron, but in a very good way.

Off to read the next book!!

OMG! I did not see that ending coming. Shew let me back up a little. As with the first book of this series, I was hooked from the beginning. Jinx has made the move to Liverpool and is working on expanding her business as a PI there. This time she lands a murder case instead of the missing persons case from the first book. The mystery has plenty of twist and turns to keep you interested. It’s a good whodunnit.
I think my favorite thing of this series is the characters. Jinx is probably one of my favorite characters in any book I have ever read. She’s such a smarty pants and honestly seems to be cool and collected no matter what happens. I loved that this book built up some different characters than the last. We see less of Stone in this one, but I’m kind of glad it worked out that way. It gave plenty of time to explore other characters such as Emory. I really loved spending more time with him and I look forward to seeing how THAT develops! Of course I loved seeing more of Lucy. I hope she eventually finds out about the Other (maybe in the next one). Wilf and Archie were great too. I love the relationship Jinx has with Wilf and I hope this is further explored in the future. I’m also looking forward to learning more about Nate’s bond with Jinx.
A problem I tend to have with secondary books in a series is what I like to call second book syndrome. Basically, this is where the author blows holes in everything good that happened in the first book. I understand why this is done, but it usually results in a pretty depressing read. Fortunately, this book does NOT have that problem! It focused on developing what was built in the first book and exploring the Other without the lens of the Connection.
I can’t wait to read the next book! I hope there are many more in this series!!

* I received an ARC copy of this book for my honest review.

I loved this! Jinx is back, and this time she’s got a new case that may have ties to her parents’ murders. Emory, the dragon Prime also has a vested interest in this case since one of his dragons is involved.
I love how this author is able to make me laugh out loud with characters’ banter, even though there are heavier topics like murder and grief. I like that the author continues to show that grief for Jinx, even though her parents’ deaths happened seven years ago. She is able to empathize with others who have lost loved ones as well because of this.
I liked seeing Jinx’s “pack” expand to more friends who care about her, and I hope that remains the case since the ending of this one has me all upset! I don’t want her to go back to shutting people out of her life.

Furthermore, and a personal note, is that I am totally Team Emory! Stone is really acting dumb in this one, and he has a long road ahead of him if he wants to earn Jinx’s trust back. Again, I’m fully Team Emory. Also, Gato is still the best!!

Read this series if you love urban fantasy, detective mysteries, loyal dogs, magical creatures, and a bit of romance!

Well, Stone is now out of the picture. He disappeared, and will not answer any of Jinx’s messages. Furthermore, Jinx discovers he had compelled her to trust him. A big no for Jinx – who already has massive trust issues. But, fear not on the romance front. Step in the ultimate alpha male. Not only is Emory gorgeous, but he is a dragon (and looks great as a dragon and in human form). And not just any dragon, but the dragon king. He is also very respectful, kind, and fully supportive of Jinx, AND he does the dishes!. Almost too good to be true.
Jinx is employed to find the murder of the husband of a young dryad she had met at Roscoe’s café. The method of death is close to that of Jinx’s parents, so she feels that solving this crime could help her solve her parent’s murder.
The dryad’s murder seems connected with the appearance of a new drug which is focused solely on Others – who do not get high on normal human drugs. The drug, Boost, either delivers a high – or kills. And that is where Emory comes in. One of his dragons has died after taking Boost, and he needs to know who is making and peddling the drug.
Glimmer, of course makes and appearance, as does Stone. Jinx’s bond with vampyr Nate draws him to the final showdown with the drug-runners, though he and his fellow vampyrs are annoyed at having missed the bloodbath.
Again, highly recommended – but you do need to read the previous book first.

Okay, I'm so into this lol

The world-building was slightly less of a mess now that I'm used to it. Harris did some incredibly interesting things with it, actually, and I loved how layered and complex this universe became in this sequel. Jinx's powers and everything that came with it also kept me hooked and! I still very much enjoyed her as a narrator and main character.

The switcharoo romance here was my absolute favorite!!! part!!!! The cliffhanger in the first book made me a little nervous, but it was so damn fun how that was explored here. Harris did a fantastic job at developing this one male character even further and putting him in the spotlight. I honestly liked him so so so much and I was so happy with the direction the series was (and will continue to???) taking. Now, I need to read the next book riiiight away!

Glimmer of Hope takes Jinx into a new adventure. Another murder, another case to solve, and to give her some extra motivation, this one might be tied to her parents' unsolved murder. The story unravels the mystery bit by bit with unexpected turning points making the book really hard to put down.
Characterwise, we get up close and personal with Emory, the dragon Prime who gets involved in the investigation because one of his dragons was killed. I loved the banter and the flirting. If I thought Stone was the love interested in the first book, I'm not so sure now. He broke Jinx's heart and lost her trust then disappeared. The unexpected ending makes me think he might have had a good reason. Will Stone redeem himself? Will there be a love triangle? Who will Jinx choose? I guess I'll have to delve into book 3 to find out. I can't wait!

I rec'd this book as an ARC and loved it.

This very British book is the perfect smash of close and cosy characters in a broad and crazy world of werewolves, vampires, dryads, witches, in the context of solving a murder mystery. Jinx gets a lead on her parents murder, gets to hang out with a surprising male lead and winds herself up in trouble again.

I wanted resolution with Stone, but I was not missing him by 50% through. Which is discomforting. What will she do next in book 3? I love the sentient, blood thirsty sword. The dragon shifter (went a little clean Billionaire next door romance). And of course the goodboi Gato the hellhound.

The characters are dynamic, Diverse and hold their own. Excited for book 3.

Oh wow, I did not expect that.
I was right. The characters are growing on me. I've read so many paranormal books I can't help comparing heroines and potential mates.
To me Jinx could easily be in a paranormal team with Mac from Bloodfire; Secret Mcqueen from Mcqueen series; Sam from the imp series; Talluluh from Thunder Road; Jez from the jezebel files; Leda from Legion of Angels and the leader of the group would be Kate Daniels from the Kate Daniel series...yup, what a epic team
Plenty of action, magic, some snogging but no hanky panky

Fantasy, Sarkasmus, Spannung - alles was das Herz begehrt

“I opened Reggie’s folder and laid his crime scene pictures next to my parents’. The similarities were undeniable; the marks on the bodies were not identical but near as dammit. I felt a thrill of excitement. It really was a lead. I was almost sure that whoever had killed Reggie had also killed my parents. And this time I was going to find them.” - Jinx

Murder isn’t usually Jinx’s gig but when she’s hired to investigate the gruesome death of a dryad named Reggie, she agrees because she knows his grieving widow, Joyce. Initially, Jinx thinks it’s an easy case to crack - simply a robbery gone wrong. However, it later transpires that the similarities between Reggie’s crime scene photos and those of her parents are virtually identical. With her first real lead in over five years, Jinx vows to stop at nothing to find those responsible.

Jinx eventually learns that Reggie was somehow mixed up in the distribution of a volatile new drug known as Boost that is responsible for a recent spate of deaths. When the drug claims another victim, Jinx finds herself teaming up with Emory, the leader of the dragon community who is investigating a Boost related death of one of his own.

As Jinx comes closer to solving her case she finds herself facing off against vampires, witches, unicorns, and griffins, little realising that the true enemy is right under her nose...

Glimmer of Hope is the second thrilling instalment of the highly entertaining Other Realm series. Once again the author has intricately woven a complex suspense-filled plot, that is original with a charm of its own.

Told from Jinx’s perspective, the book picks up eight weeks after the events of the previous book. We learn that Jinx has sold up and moved her PI agency to Liverpool. Her blossoming relationship with Stone has suffered a setback after she realised he had compelled her to trust him when they first met. Instead, accompanying her in her latest investigation is the charismatic leader of the dragons himself, Prime Elite Emory. The chemistry between Jinx and Emory was amazing and was one of my favourite aspects of the book. While it remains to be seen whether Stone will redeem himself, I for one am definitely rooting for the dragon 😉

The author has a unique talent for writing believable relationships and not just of the romantic kind. In one instance, for example, the author revisits an incident from Jinx’s past that was first touched upon in Glimmer of Dragons. As a result, Jinx is able to appreciate the lengths that Wilf went to over the years, to bring her over to the Other and the two share a tender moment. Watching loyalties cement, friendships bloom and characters grow is just part of the reason to invest your time and energy in this series.

All in all, this was a worthy addition with a gripping plot line and memorable characters that will reel readers in hook line and sinker. The devastating cliffhanger at the end regarding a certain character has ensured that this reader will be eagerly anticipating the follow-up.

Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy, magical realms, wizards, vampires, werewolves, unicorns, griffins, dryads, seers, hellhounds, secret societies and mysteries etc

Plot- The plot revolves around the FMC solving a new mystery, and falling for a new love interest since the last one from Book 1 ghosted her.

Writing Good.

Characters- I liked the FMC even though she’s pretty rough around the edges. 3 stars for her.
Characters who are described as having constant “rage” under the surface are an instant turnoff for me… like, that’s super weird and would give off extremely negative vibes. But this FMC is normal and cool, maybe little edgy but totally in control and has regular emotions. So when the author used a “rage” description for Jinx, it was really annoying and smacked of poor writing, imo. Luckily it wasn’t repeated.

The love interest, Emory, is uber-powerful and competent while also being protective and sweet to Jinx, which I appreciated. But I don’t feel like I really know him, tbh.

There are many side characters that are friends with Jinx and genuinely care about her, and I love that.

Romance- Medium chemistry.
I’m not sure how I feel about this immortal love interest, Emory. I mean, how do we know that Jinx isn’t just his flavor of the month? How many lovers has this guy had? What is his relationship longevity? Their compatibility is an issue for me and it hasn’t been addressed.
And why is he even interested in her? His intense interest came out of left field when they had barely met. I’m just not sure about him…
I can’t describe this as slow burn since he was immediately into her, but their relationship is progressing slowly so… idk.
And I’m still sort of into Stone, the love interest from Book 1, tbh. Plus he’s a magical human with a normal life span like Jinx, so I’m not ready to throw him away…

Content-

Language- I don’t recall much swearing in this one. No f-words.
Spice- no sex scene (they make out once but it’s not in detail). PG-13 due to casual conversational mentions of sex between various characters, and at one point she considered having sex with Emory before he slowed down.
Cover- - ok
POV- - single POV
Cliffhanger- - yes. The mystery is solved but there is a reveal at the end that is going to upend her life and send her chasing after a new criminal. She’s in a good place with the love interest although they are only newly dating and can only possibly have shallow feelings for each other at this point. I don’t know if I’ll continue the series. I’ll check out the reviews.
Format- - audiobook via Hoopla
Narration- - fantastic!

How I rated the series-

Book 1, “Glimmer of the Other” - 4.5 stars
Book 2, “Glimmer of Hope” - 4 stars
*I’m not continuing the series. I read reviews for Books 3 & 4 and I’m not intrigued.
(Book 3 does a lot of time travel which I’m not a big fan of, and Book 4 sounds like a train wreck I’d rather skip. So I’ll call it good.)
