This story come with a warning for good reason, if what’s mentioned is too much for you I suggest skipping this one all together.
Upon my second reading this story was as beautifully written, albeit disturbing, as I found it my first read through. It is a heartbreaking tale of what happens when you adhere to the strict belief that a woman should only be with a man. Originally published in the taboo & forbidden FF romance anthology Girls Night, I found no new content has been added.
Experiencing life through the eyes of Farren and her brother Tucker highlighted how one mans perversions of right and wrong can destroy all that was once beautiful, innocent, and carefree. But it is seeing through Violante’s eyes that can bring you to tears. She has shut herself down to numb out the pain and debauchery that has been forced upon her. Yet through it all the heart still wants what it does, leading Farren & Violante towards each other in a painstaking display of kinship. This was the unconventional blossoming of a romance and a glimpse in time without a HFN or HEA.
I read this and my heart hurt. For Farren and Violante. The traumas they endured broke my heart. The betrayal Farren felt left my heart on the floor bleeding for her.
Farren is forced to witness abuse done to Violante by Farren's father because of their sexual orientation. And despite all that they still found comfort and love in each other. While the story was heart-wrenching the HEA was more than deserved.
This novella may be short but it goes deep with romantic desperation. The constant trauma pushes Farren to comfort Violante and soothe the position she inadvertently put them in. They suffer together and that builds their bond.
Slowly but surely they hatch a plot to save themselves from this hell with the help of an unlikely ally.
i would not call this a dark romance at all and it’s insane that it’s marketed as such. this is 51 pages of a homophobic father torturing his daughter and an innocent women. he also involves his son in the torturing of these women. this is horror. it’s basically all rape. if the author thinks the last 2 pages of the book or that one scene between the women and the daughter make this a “romance”, i’ll actually lose it bc no. this could’ve easily been turned into a dark romance by adding a few more chapters where the main characters actually get a healing happy ending, instead of that unclear ending. for the love of god learn to label books as they truly are, because if this was labeled correctly, it might’ve been a good splatterpunk/horror (or literally anything else other than a romance) but the wrong labeling completely ruined it.
I am in disbelief of what I just read. This book an extremely dark FF “romance” with heavy heavy on page abuse, the content would be extremely triggering to many. The book is a walking noncon and it left me feeling dirty and honestly I was sobbing in some parts. Despite the content being difficult to read (yes I knew what I was getting into when I started it) I didn’t quite expect it to be so graphic and detailed. It was well written for such a short novella. It had my heart aching for violante and fallen. For different reasons but both were trapped in a situation that they couldn’t control and subjected to horrific abuse at the hands of fallens father, all in a means to correct their sexual orientation.
What a crazy messed up story! Opened the story thinking I am getting some regular girl on girl romance story but learned very quickly this was NOT the case. Poor Farren for having to deal with such a vicious homophobic monster of a dad. Poor Violante for having to be the subject to those lessons. Terribly amazing dark FF romance novella. And that colorful yet twisted and dark looking cover is 10/10.
This is my first read from this author and I am hooked! This was a fantastic quick dark read. There was so many intense emotions packed in to this short story, yet Ally wrote it so well that you were still able to feel the characters pain in the little time.
If you have any triggers at all, especially for SA, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!
Ally Vance will take you to the deepest darkest places you couldn’t even imagine. This is dark and not what you’d typically read. Yet, you can keep reading. It’s all intense emotions for the short time you’re reading. If dark themes, full of trigger warning are not your thing, go enjoy a different book. This book is not for the light-hearted.
