It wasn’t my psychic abilities that led me to the box. It was the dog. But it was my special talent that told me there was a man in the box on the side of the road. A murder victim.
The visions I get from the man make no sense. In fact, all my visions on this case seem to lead nowhere. Have I lost my gift?
When the killer targets someone close to me, I must trust my visions and trust myself to save her. Will it be enough?
Dawn Merriman lives in northeastern Indiana on a small pig farm with her husband and teenage children. She enjoys animals, auctions, reading, snorkeling and writing small town murder mystery novels. Dawn Merriman completed her first novel in Middle School and a few others in High School and college. She won 1st place in the Northeast Indiana Young Writers short story contest in 1990. After a writing hiatus to raise her children, she published her debut novel, "How Murder Saved My Life" in 2019.
Finding a dead body in a trunk propels Gabby into another murder investigation and right into more arguments with her brother, Dustin. Meanwhile, mom Emily is free from prison and adjusting to life after 15 years in prison. A fairly interesting crime to solve with Gabby continuing to insert herself angering Dustin and the medical examiner. Same day, same problem with hard-headed and still fairly emotionally immature Gabby going full steam in spite of stepping all over other toes.
This is book 5 and I've enjoyed them all so far. They are easy to read and not overly complicated or so full of characters you have to sort them out. I like a good complicated mystery but sometimes you just want to read a book that's fun and entertaining. This is one of those.
This was an easy, fast read that kept my interest though had nothing too exciting going for it. Gabby can touch things and see or feel what impressions are left by the person or persons who held the item. She is dating a detective on the police force, who is also her brother's partner and best friend.
Gabby has welcomed her mother home from prison, after having been proven innocent of the crime. Her mother has moved into the apartment above Gabby's shop and she's noticing footsteps and children's laughter in the building. She wonders if there are ghosts. Things are disappearing in the local museum and donut shop, which has the owners wondering as well.
Gabby stops to help an elderly neighbor who has fallen down a hill by his mailbox when he tried to reach an old trunk that he sees lying there. She touches the trunk and knows that it holds something terrible. The police come, the trunk is opened and so begins the mystery involving Gabby.
Gabby isn't liked by some people in her town especially the woman coroner, who pretty much calls her a freak and fraud. This isn't professional at all, so picturing this woman openly bad mouthing Gabby isn't genuine. She and her brother have conflict and not the best relationship, though we never know exactly why. All in all, it was an ok read that I did like, despite that it could have been so much better.
Is Gabby ability failing her this is the thought that goes through her head when she discovers a body in a box by the side of the road. Visions that make no sense and Gabby can't place together lead to lots of confusion. Whilst Lucas and Dustin try to understand what happened to the man in the box. Gabby has other missions to find out what is happening in the museum. Which leads to more confusing visions and a shot being fired. I will forever love their mum as she just makes me chuckle. However I feel like she is struggling to deal with her time in prison and being out. However it's nice to see her spending time with her family. I was wondering about her comment about her husband, will she go see him at prison maybe? I will just say this the forensic pathologist is really annoying and I hope karma finds her 😂. Also what is Alexis hiding? something is very much going on with her. Also what a shock ending not the person I thought would ever ask for help from Gabby.
Everything is going well for Gabby. She has a burgeoning business and a boyfriend. Her mother is released from prison after spending years locked up for a crime she didn't commit. Even her brother is treating her with more respect. So, of course, that's when she starts doubting her gift. Gabby wants to help so much, but the visions aren't clear, and she isn't sure if she can trust them. Still, she pushes through, putting her life on the line to solve the mystery of the man in the box before someone else is murdered.
The Message in the Box by Dawn Merriman doesn't let Gabby get comfortable, but it keeps the reader pulling for her. It is another excellent book in the Messages of Murder series.
With old situations squared away, we get to see a new direction for the crew to head as they each grapple with the remnants of the past. I enjoyed the peak into Dustin's home life and seeing Lucas struggle with accepting Gabby while trying to protect her. Grandma played less of a part as Emily was gotten to know. The mystery was great though I figured out all but the motive. I'm definitely going to keep reading this series and I'll be sad when it ends.
In this Gabby thinks her tattoo is not guiding her right, there is a mystery of a ghost, missing items, a dead man and what is going on with Alexis? Her tattoo is not misguiding her, she just can't see the dots. Dustin is as exasperated and angry with Gabby as ever, because she keeps running off, but in this one she does at least call him at the end, as ever she is at risk when she is looking in to it all, but it all comes to a head. A very clever well written story.
Another great book only this time it was nice to learn more about Gabby’s mom Emily who was released from a 14-year prison sentence for a crime her husband (Gabby’s father) committed. Dustin is still the same grumbling brother who still doesn’t quite understand Gabby’s gift and now has his own problems close to home. Looking forward to reading how Gabby tackles her worst nightmare helping Lacy find her missing sister.
I've really enjoyed all five of Gabby's stories. They all had different but fascinating plot focused around Gabby and all of her family. Her special gift is endlessly fascinating. I'm looking forward to the sixth book in this series. Just wish I knew when it will be coming out.
Message in a Box: A Psychic Murder Mystery by Dawn Merriman is full of mysterious happenings. The series continues to hold my interest, making it difficult to put down way past bedtime. I think you will enjoy it's roller coaster story as much as I did...happy reading!
Gabby's mom spent many years in prison for a murder that never occurred. Once she is home she decided to move into the apartment above Gabby's office. Things are missing or moved at the museum and bakery. The director of the museum hires Gabby and the case begins to open up.
Storyline I've never read before. The one thing I'm having problems with is, and I hesitate to say stupid or irresponsible, way Gabby acts. Like getting shot at, but not calling the police. There's multiple examples like this in previous books, and probably more to come. At least at the end, she did the right thing.
Great mystery read. I love the whole physic touch story. This book is exciting and scary. It is full of danger love and family. The characters are unique and interesting. This book is a quick read and has a great plot. I enjoyed it immensely. It is hard to put down and easily to devour. Can't wait to see what trouble is in store for our neighborhood physic.
I have quickly become a huge fan of Gabby McAllister and crew. Like the other books in this series, Dawn Merriman does not disappoint! It is filled with intrigue and keeps you guessing until the end. She does an excellent job of driving the story with wonderful characters and believable action! I loved it!
When helping a neighbor get up from a fall, she finds a box with a bad feeling, so she calls her bf and brother, and that starts a new mystery who killed the man in the box. During the investigation, people are wondering where some of their stuff has disappeared. The conclusion is pretty good.
This is my favorite book in the series so far. I think the author spent more time on the murder mystery now that we should be familiar with the regular characters (if read in order.) Gabby and Dustin are still pushing each other’s buttons, i.e. making each other angry. I read a review that it’s the same old thing between them, but isn’t that reality? I feel Gabby will have a temper for years, at least until she gains more confidence, and she learns to ignore Dustin. But maybe that’s what helps her be so brave; she acts before she thinks. I’m loving these books.
I love these mysteries and many of the characters are extremely interesting. However I am somewhat disappointed in Gabby and how she sometimes comes across as selfish. She butts in and acts like she’s the only one that can solve these mysteries. I get that she has special abilities but law enforcement is important too.
#5 in the Messages of Murder is as great as the other 4
A box found on the side of the road hold clues to a murder, a ghost story? Gabby and her family are in the center of history, more visions, family drama, sweet tea (my favorite drink) 2nd to morning coffee, coroners who are rude and snippy, and kissing a very wonderful detective. Who could put the book down?
This book is more exciting and scary than the other 4 before it. Not only is Gabby in trouble but so are several more people. The bad person is not anyone that I suspected. This is a surprise!
I thought it was a really good book and worthy of Dawn Merriman especially with a Fiction book! I am planning on reading the rest of her books by kindle unlimited! Thanks, Kit Ryan
Another great addition to this series. Love the character development. Lots of questions still need answering so very much looking forward to the next book in the series
I've loved to growth into her powers. The close relationships she has had. These are easy to follow and read. I do hope you continue the Gabby story. Leaving off this way leaves me wanting more
This book is a 5 in fact the whole series is a 5. Dawn Merriman knows how to spin a tale that draws you in and truly ties you up in knots. I highly recommend this author and her books!
I love the dynamics of the characters. Gabby especially. The fact that her gift is from God and that although she sees bad things it guides her to the truth. Good always prevails. Well written and well developed characters. Thank you.
I love everything about this series. From the well developed and finely detailed characters. To the wondrous imaginative literary genius the author exudes throughout the entire narrative.
I just love Gabby! I hope the way this book went she will give her gift a little more of a break when she doesn't see the whole or more of the message right away. This was a good mystery with a nice ending! Thanks Dawn Merriman, I am loving this series!!
Yet another great story, written by this author. I really enjoyed this book as you get to see new relationships (don't want to spoil anything, if you haven't read the others.) This had me hooked from started to finish.
I have loved all the books in this series so far and can't wait to read more!
Well I've read them all, I'm at the last one and boy this has been a really good series. It had it all, lost of secrets, love , excitement, and drama, what else, its been great. Can't wait to see what else is in store.
This book has a lot going on….Emily is dealing with her sudden change of circumstance, there’s something going on in Dustin’s marriage, Gabby is doubting her ability, and Grandma Dot is still everyone’s rock of stability.
I absolutely love this series. Gabby has to put up with a lot of mistrust and ignorant people who don't understand or believe in her abilities, but she doesn't let that stop her from helping people. Can't wait to see what happens next.
