Apprentice magicians aren’t supposed to fall in love with their masters, but Kit’s so desperate for Master Vervain, he’s about to cast a spell that could ruin his life forever.

Lee Welch lives in a house on a hill in the windiest city in the world – Wellington, New Zealand. She shares the house with her partner, two kids and two cats. Hedgehogs visit occasionally, which makes her happy.
Lee wrote her first novel (an unpublished pastiche of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) when she was seven and has been writing on-and-off ever since.
She studied ancient history at Auckland University and creative writing at Birkbeck, University of London.
To pay the bills, she works as an editor and business communications adviser for a large government department. By night, she writes escapist fantasies, mostly m/m romances, usually with magic in them. She likes crumbling mansions, cavernous libraries, mysterious curses and handsome magicians.
When she’s not writing, she reads, especially fantasy, history, romance, biography, folklore, comics, and children’s books. Her favourite authors include Ursula Le Guin, Peter Ackroyd and KJ Charles.
4.5 stars. Very short, very good. Obviously I'd like it to be longer because I'll eat up anything from Lee Welch, but it's a well crafted short story that doesn't necessarily need anything more. (It's also free on the author's website, so go on and read it!)
I left review originally on the Anthology page since this page was not available back then. My review: 4.5 * for A Spell for Master Vervain by Lee Welch I did not read the Anthology, only one story generously shared by author and available here I adored the short story, it was quite eventful and complete for such a short format. Kit is in love with his magic arts teacher - Master Vervain - and in desperation attempts a forbidden spell to summon an incubus that would look like his teacher to fulfill his lovemaking fantasy. Not the best way to deal with the unrequited love but when one is desperate for affection, rationality goes out of the window. What Kit does not expect is getting the actual deal. He is embarrassed by getting his wishes known to the object of his desires but the story takes an unusual twist and proves that some wishes do come true. I loved the story, just wish it was longer and had some glimpse into their future. Many thanks to the author for their generosity.
It’s cute, touching, and a bit silly too. Pretty steamy for a short story but it all makes sense for the plot. I’d like to read more of these two or their world.
