We trace our roots to the settlement of the Kentucky Territory in the 1600’s. Search for cities, towns, rivers and creeks in Kentucky and you might surprise yourself to find the name “Haynes”. We were a hard scrabble bunch even into the 1940’s when my father grew up as a child. As for the curse words and sexual innuendos, I must admit that I was tempted to soften the language and, in some cases, remove paragraphs entirely, but to do so would deny you the chance to immerse yourself in the culture of the time. It is clear that men from Kentucky were extremely macho, valuing strength and independence and would be considered quite vulgar compared to the culture of our time. I make no apology for this. That being said, I want to immerse you in a very different time to help you understand your past, but it is my prayer, you will rise above their language and attitude of the time so that you ALWAYS glorify Christ.
Wow! This man fought in North Korea and Vietnam totaling five years of seeing tracers. He recounts turning 18 while in North Korea on the Yalu River near the Manchurian border and being involved in the longest retreat in US Army history with young men committing suicide along the way by placing their heads under the tank treads. Such a brutal war. Then he recounts his time while in Vietnam as a Special Forces intelligence sergeant working with the CIA and having his operation post being overrun by the Vietcong just as his Caribou aircraft was taking off to take him back to Okinawa. That same day men came to his wife's home declaring him to be MIA only for him to show up the next day with mud on his boots, opening the door to his home and asking his wife "What's for supper!" while she thought he was dead for over 24 hours! He did a great job writing his recollections of all of this and what's most interesting are all the funny things he experienced. He just seems impervious to all the doom and gloom.
