Little white lies can’t kill you. But these lies can.
The chance to visit their friends at their lake house is just what Susan thinks she and her husband, Grant, need to relax. Susan can’t wait to spend time with her best friend and finally get the vacation she’s been wanting for a while.
But the lake house isn’t as restful as she imagined it would be.
Lies begin surfacing as soon as they get to the house. Truth that’s been kept hidden comes to light.
Something’s wrong with their hosts. Everyone seems to have a secret. When everyone finally knows the truth, it’s going to be too late for someone to make it out alive.
Emily lives in the mountains of North Carolina and loves hiking with her dogs--only when she's not thinking up twisted tales, that is. She loves books that keep you up long after you should be in bed.
DNF at 47%. I think very highly of Emily Shiner. I really do. And I’ve greatly enjoyed the few books that I’ve read through so far. However, I really struggled to connect with this story. The characters were tolerable, but concept was super, duper far-fetched, with the ambitions not aligning with the reality of what was happening. And the story started off on a bit of a wonky premise, adding additional layers on, and it all just fell apart before I could reach the halfway point. This does not hurt my opinion of the author, and I still plan to read many more of her books. This was just not a good match for me.
A delicious page turner that started with an explosive admission.
Susan and Grant have been married for decades and raised their children. They're now looking on to retirement and what they want to enjoy in their silver years. Susan's best and oldest friend invites them up to their lake cabin for a little getaway and Susan is delighted--she's always wanted a lake house, it's the one thing she's never been able to have that she's wanted and she hopes this will finally tip her husband into relenting and getting her one. It would be the perfect way to spend the rest of their years.
Except . . .
When they arrive, Susan's friend reveals a stunning secret that comes along with an imploring request. Their stay quickly turns upside down with long-held secrets popping up like tulips in the spring.
I loved this book. Gripping, fast-paced, and totally absorbing. Shiner is climbing her way up my list of favorite authors.
I can't believe I'm reading this one 3 stars. It probably deserves lower, but I did keep reading, flipping pages, wanting to see what happened next. Until the ending. It didn't even make sense. The way each chapter rotates between characters, we get glimpses inside of their heads that contradict the ending. Maybe if I didn't think so hard about it then I wouldn't have even noticed. But I do have a brain. I am a thinker. And right now I'm just scratching my head wondering how the author wouldn't think we'd not notice huge plot holes
This book was so silly. Obviously it’s fiction and I love this genre, but this was so far-fetched you can’t really get into it. I laughed at a few parts. The plot was ridiculous, all of the characters were annoying and just stupid people. I finished the book just because I still had to see how it ended and if there was some big plot twist - but that was pretty much a let down also.
So 2 stars because I didn’t quit in the middle like I contemplated and because it could have maybe been a good story if every single thing and person wasn’t just so absurd.
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It was kinda ridiculous in a way . How exactly does all the characters decide to kill one another? And all the talk of Susan wanting a lake house? Rich people problems! Lol
I loved the lake vibe to the story and it was decent up until the end. It felt thrown together and honestly how many wanna be killers are around each other. Nothing too wild and some of the twists were so far fetched.

It was a good read up until nearly the end. I just think the end could’ve been better it wrapped it all up a little too strange kind of unbelievable. I won’t say anymore don’t want to give the story away you can read it for yourself.
The Liar House was ok. High in creativity with all the twists & turns & some interesting character portrayal. It was interesting to see Grant's perspective changed by his buddy, to think murder was a good idea, although no plausibility was presented as to why divorce wasn't an option. Regrettably, I can't say this was well written & I think it needed proofreading. But, maybe this author can hone their skills, there was some good ideas there. I was mildly repulsed by the prodominantly dependent roles of the women & the foundation of the story, the lake house, well, "a little spoiled" was incredulous...IDK, parts just didn't scan. There were some clever bits.

I read and enjoyed three of Emily Shiner’s books before this one… but this one fell short. Even though it’s just over 200 pages it’s very dragged out. Would have been better as a short story. The ending contradicts the actual thoughts going through the characters minds earlier in the book, which I don’t like at all. Even though I didn’t like this book I will continue reading Shiner’s books since the others I’ve read were really good. Skip this one!
Well, I feel kind of cheated honestly. It was a great read, I enjoyed the book except for all the spelling mistakes (sorry, pet peeve of mine). The story kept me intrigued, I love the way it was written, each chapter was from the character's perspective. I just felt like the plot kept building up but then the climax fell FLAT. Still a good book and definitely worth a read :) I will for sure check out more books from this author!
Until the end. I feel cheated (Freudian Slip ) The story of Susan, Grant, Rosemary and Frank started as an insane tangle of lies and deceit, A juicy page turner, but it became a total eye roll by the end. It felt like the author wasn't sure how to wrap it up, in my opinion, it cheapened the story. Slight spoiler ahead
Wow! Just wow. This is a must read. I started this last night at the hair dressers and finished it this morning. It was exciting from beginning to end. Surprise ending, quite twisted actually. Really delicious. Characters could be annoying as f**k but just go with it. Highly recommend. Enjoy!!!
Absolutely a good read. There were times where I thought I had it all figured out but I was wrong. I do feel there were some minor plot holes but it didn’t take away from the story entirely.
Yet another fantastic read from Emily Shines . I could honestly sit all day and read her stories (if I had nothing else to do 😂😂😂 ,absolutely brilliant ,cannot wait to start next read by Emily Shiner ,definitely worth it .Thank you x
