After War comes Pestilence. Foiled in their nuclear attack on New York, but successful in triggering the New Madrid Fault, the terrorist cabal bent on destroying America turns to Phase Two of their releasing a deadly epidemic inside the USA and framing Russia for the deed. As order breaks down and chaos sweeps across the nation, Agent Martinelli and her CIA colleagues race to ferret out the killers and stop them before millions die.Written with an immediacy and insight that only comes from Rear Admiral (ret.) John Babb’s decade of experience preparing for just such a catastrophe, Unleashing Chaos is the second chilling prequel to William Alan Webb’s Last Brigade Universe.
The book, "Unleashing Chaos", is another thriller by John Babb with William Alan Webb. It smoothly continues from where "Sowing Chaos" leaves the reader. The characters continue to develop and scenarios that are all too real come into play in this exciting and thought-provoking novel. You are entangled in a web of terror within the first few pages. The author's insight into the critical attacks on our country's security is timely and gripping. Again Angela Martinelli is a great asset to the government she serves. I highly recommend, as chaos is truly unleashed in the most alarming circumstances for the United States. It is scary good.
Set in mid-2025, a few months after the events of Book One (Sowing Chaos), John Babb’s sequel continues the riveting story of a catastrophically collapsed American society struggling to overcome the massively-scaled attacks from the previous volume. Those earlier disasters were fomented and financed by a certain North Korean dictator, but much of what unfolds in this volume seems to be the work of a criminal mastermind with his own selfish agenda… though he’s utilizing some of the players from the earlier setup. The scale of these new attacks is exponentially worse… in terms of deaths, destruction, paralysis of travel and shipping, and annihilation of the dollar currency of America (and cooperative nations). As we might expect, those other nations soon feel their own catastrophic pain from the collapse of America’s businesses, manufacturing, commerce, and banking. We rejoin a few of the same characters from Book One, but also meet a host of others. The villains are well-drawn and cringingly evil… the good guys (male and female) are convincingly played. We also meet at least one compelling renegade character who’s totally outside either camp and yet shares at least one major goal with the “good guys.” The author draws on years of actual experience with the very types of medical outbreaks which occur in this story… and that authenticity captures the reader even more. In fact, this genuineness is one of the aspects which truly stands out. It’s particularly chilling that these 2025 incidents – as calamitous as they are – could very well be actual newspaper headlines. If not in 2025, then perhaps a couple of years either way. This differs from what I’ve encountered in many “future” stories wherein the central chaotic events seem much too improbable. With current real-life situations developing as they are, Babb’s scenarios of massively-scaled destruction feel all too probable! Summary: Though this story can stand alone quite well, I recommend you read the prequel also. But take your blood pressure pill before you read these compelling novels — a detailed look at a totally shattered America, which feels all too possible.
Book review: “Unleashing Chaos: A Last Brigade Prequel (The Collapse Book 2) By John Babb and William Alan Webb Most of my career was in medical research (Emory University, Atlanta, GA) and I appreciate the correct realistic portrayals of the medical scenarios in this novel. Over twenty years ago one of my colleagues who worked at CDC next door to our Emory campus gave me a tour of the Level 4 underground lab at CDC. For research purposes they had many dangerous “bugs” there such as the Spanish Flu virus that killed millions of people at the end of World War One. The labs are kept at ‘negative’ pressure, so you have to go through an airlock to enter them. This is done to prevent air in the labs from escaping thus possibly infecting people on Clifton Road and beyond. I highly recommend this book for those of you who enjoy novels with a sound scientific basis!
A lot of unrealistic situations that take you out of the story.
I still enjoyed the story of the series and the premise of what it tries to portray. I understand that government agencies stove pipe information, but this book makes the entire US government seem inept. Two examples, CDC sends out information and bulletin form about smallpox and Marburg virus but the US Army doesn’t have it? A CIA agent confront enemies of the US government on a plane without friskiing them or securing them, I don’t think so. There are other incidents in this book that don’t make sense as these two did not. But it’s a good story fast paced going on to read the next, gives me something to do.
John Babb and William Alan Webb have given us more reasons to question our current state of affairs in the United States. Unleashing Chaos grabs you upfront and pulls you to the very end. Anyone that reads this second installment of The Collapse series is assured of seeing a fictional storyline that could very well be an emulation of the current mayhem and dystopia occurring in our country today. A well-written book by authors with vision, truly worth reading.
Book of the final moments of America show the major events mentioned threw out the main books in the last Brigade series. Now we set into the people fought tooth and nail for reasons that thouse who come after will never have thought possible 50 years in the future of the Last Brigades rise into a dark age of humanity.
It’s all downhill from here as economic problems multiply and exacerbate the traumatic effects from the various biological assaults. As the US collapses, the world soon suffers a similar fate.
