About the author

Pascal Lainé (born 10 May 1942 in Anet, Eure-et-Loir) is a French academic, novelist, and writer.

Awarded both the Prix Médicis (1971 for l'Irrévolution) and the Goncourt (1974 for La Dentellière), Pascal Lainé has published over 20 novels and has written for television, theater, and film.

While recovering from childhood illnesses, Lainé discovered novelists Alexandre Dumas, père and Victor Hugo, aspiring to their kind of voluminous writing, but in school he focused on philosophy and history, becoming an avid student of Immanuel Kant, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Martin Heidegger. He was also drawn to Marxism (both by conviction and from a desire to rile his parents) and he chose Russian as his second foreign language, permitting him to read Anton Chekhov and Fyodor Dostoyevsky in the original.

Lainé studied philosophy at l'École normale supérieure de Saint-Cloud and began his career as a teacher first at the Lycée technique de Saint-Quentin and later at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. He then became a professor in 1974 at the Institut universitaire de technologie in Villetaneuse. He currently serves as an administrator at the Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques (SACD).

With Rimbaud, he discovered the "fireworks" of poetry, and in Mallarmé he discovered the pleasure of deciphering a text and studying its structure. He is also fascinated by Witold Gombrowicz: "I felt with this joker, this aristocratic Rabelais an instant kinship. He taught me that a writer gives up his homeland and is always a foreigner wherever he finds himself."

Một câu chuyện chậm rãi như kể về cô gái trẻ Apple là thợ thêu, trong sáng lương thiện nhưng nghèo và thuộc tầng lớp bình dân một ngày yêu chàng sinh viên xuất thân gia đình danh giá. Tác phẩm dường như muốn tái hiện lại cảnh Eva và Adam vốn trong sáng nhưng từ khi ăn trái cấm, bắt đầu chạm bụi trần, từ đó bước thẳng vào sự trần tục sân hận ích kỷ.

Cô thợ thêu, dù ăn trái cấm nhưng vẫn không thay đổi bản chất và tình yêu của mình, thế nên khi nhận được sự hắt hủi của người yêu, cô đã phải kết thúc đời mình ở bệnh viện tâm thần. Tác phẩm dùng nhiều câu chuyện tình yêu của nhiều nhân vật, không chỉ của riêng cô thợ thêu, để kể về bản chất phóng túng, ích kỷ của con người nói chung, và rằng tình yêu của những ai chung thủy lương thiện có thể thành nạn nhân của bản chất ích kỷ ấy từ những người khác.

Văn phong miêu tả nên chậm rãi, đôi chỗ hơi dài dòng hơn, nhưng đó là nếu ta so với nhịp điệu văn phong và tâm lý đọc nhanh hiện nay, còn không thì cứ nên kiên nhẫn đọc theo phong cách thuộc về thời đại riêng của tác phẩm, ta hình dung ra dễ dàng hơn không gian và những nhân vật, nhiều khung hình được nhấn nhá như những đoạn phim cần được dừng lại đôi chút để lắng đọng hơn.

Despite the small volume, I approached the book about three times before I could finally read it. It might be that there is that superficial, clearly visible calmness. You have to look closely to see some emotions under this layer and understand the point of the story. Only then the whole takes on a completely new shape and expression. And frankly speaking, the impression it left for me is exactly as bland as its main character, Pomme.

This novel seems to have won the Goncourt Prize by taking Madame Bovary to the next step: not an ordinary woman having an affair, but a woman who goes beyond ordinariness, who has a hole at her center, unemotional, obedient, accepting. The novel focuses on her relationships with a woman and a man. Very simply written.

„Klasizm” jest ostatnio słowem, które robi oszałamiającą karierę i ta powieść jest bardzo klasistowska. Główna bohaterka, Pomme, jest cichą i prostolinijną dziewczyną wywodzącą się ze środowiska robotniczego. Na wakacjach spędzanych z koleżanką z pracy w jednym z nadmorskich kurortów poznaje chłopaka, który zabija czas grą w tenisa. Jest on zaintrygowany i oczarowany prostotą Pomme, która różni się o wyszczekanych i mających zdanie na każdy temat jego rówieśniczek z uczelni. Kontynuują oni znajomość po powrocie z wakacji i zamieszkują ze sobą. Dość szybko okazuje się jednak, że Rzymianie się mylili i jednak amor nem omnia vincit. To, co początkowo wydawało mu się w dziewczynie interesujące, w dłuższej perspektywie czasu jest szalenie rozczarowujące. To, co początkowo brał za jej melancholię i skłonność do zadumy okazuje się kompletnym brakiem wrażliwość na jakiekolwiek bodźce intelektualne. Czując, że kobieta – bluszcz nie jest typem wymarzonej partnerki, chłopak zrywa z Pomme, która przeżywa załamanie nerwowe i trafia do szpitala. Jej były już partner odwiedza ją tylko po to, aby ukoić swe wyrzuty sumienia. Będąc jednak na tyle inteligentną, by właściwie odczytać jego zamiary, dziewczyna wciska mu kit i na tym ich znajomość (i powieść) się kończy.

Powieść stawia tezę, że a i owszem, przeciwieństwa się przyciągają, lecz siła przyciągania ma charakter odwrotnie proporcjonalny i maleje wraz ze wzrostem czasu, przez który taka znajomość trwa. Byt Pomme – proletariackie środowisko w którym wzrastała i otrzymana edukacja właściwa temu środowisku – określa jej świadomość i wyznacza poziom jej aspiracji. Z tego punktu widzenia jest ona bardzo „klasistowska”, gdyż zakłada brak możliwość pokonania barier przynależnych swojej klasie społecznej. Powieść otrzymała nagrodę Goncourtów, lecz zestarzała się fatalnie i świadczy w moim skromnym przekonaniu wyłącznie o tym, czym jarała się francuska krytyka literacka w połowie lat 70. ubiegłego stulecia.

Uwaga na marginesie – jestem świadom, że „Folio” to popularna i tania linia wydawnicza, lecz zastanawiam się, czy zawsze musi ona wydawać książki w tak bezmyślny sposób. Tytułowa „koronczarka” to nawiązanie wprost do obrazu Vermeera pod tym samym tytułem.
Postać Pomme po załamaniu nerwowym pisarz przyrównuje do postaci z płótna Vermeera pisząc […] przeszedł by obok i nawet jej nie zauważył. Była jedną z tych dusz, które nie dają znaku, ale które trzeba cierpliwie pytać i uważnie im się przyglądać. Niegdyś malarz uczyniłby ją tematem obrazu. Byłaby praczką, roznosicielką wody albo koronczarką (tłum. własne). Czy więc nie można było do ciężkiej cholery dać reprodukcji tego obrazu na okładkę zamiast jakieś półnagiej dupiastej kolumbryny wpatrzonej w księżyc?

Elle a grandi dans le Nord, Pomme. Puis elle a suivi sa mère en région parisienne et a trouvé une place chez un coiffeur. Pendant un séjour en Normandie elle a rencontré un garçon, avec lequel elle s’est installée. Elle a tout pour être heureuse, Pomme ? Difficile à savoir vu qu’elle ne donne jamais son avis, qu’elle n’exprime jamais ses pensées. En-a-t-elle des pensées d’ailleurs ? On pourrait se le demander tellement elle semble transparente au regard des autres. C’est un élément du décor, une compagnie ni agréable ni désagréable, une jeune femme sans rêve et sans relief.
La dentellière, c’est l’histoire d’une vie insipide, de celles dont on n’attend rien. Pas de révolte par rapport à sa condition, pas de prise de position ni d’opinion, Pomme subit, elle s’efface, elle suit le mouvement sans jamais être force de proposition. Une pauvre fille, dans tous les sens du terme, que personne n’admire, à laquelle personne ne fait vraiment attention. Je trouve que le roman a mal vieillit. La narrateur semble regarder son personnage principal avec une forme de mépris et de condescendance doublée d’un patriarcat bien rance qui fleure bon les années 70. J’ai du mal à croire qu’aucun autre roman de 1974 ne méritait davantage le Goncourt que celui-là, qui représente à n’en pas douter une des plus médiocres cuvées de ces 50 dernières années.

La Dentellière, c’est Pomme, une jeune fille dont la simplicité est sans doute le seul défaut. À travers le regard d’un ancien amant qui pensait ne pas avoir compté, Pomme se dévoile dans un portrait touchant, celui d’une jeune fille dont la modestie maladive causera la perte. Un personnage principal magnifiquement dessiné dans un roman émouvant, au style simple mais soutenu, parfaitement maîtrisé.

Pour quelqu'un qui aime les phrases tordues et souvent métaphoriques c'était une bonne lecture parce que Lainé est incapable de ne pas faire de phrases alambiquées à la limite de la metalittérature. L'histoire semble presque banale mais parce qu'elle se veut banale de par la volonté de l'auteur de crée un personnage dont la grande banalité serait le mot d'ordre et sa raison d'être sur papier. Pomme bien qu'elle soit au centre de l'intrigue malheureusement ne fait pas le poids face à sa différence des autres personnages qui sont incapable de la comprendre. Il y a quelque chose à dire sur la vanité et le consumérisme de la fin des années 60, et comment la description de la voiture permet de comprendre où veut en venir l'auteur à ce sujet.

Un roman comme tous les autres de son époque, sans intrigue spectaculaire mais qui suit plutôt une vie ordinaire, voire banale, marquée par une passivité déconcertante. L’écriture de Lainé se distingue par une précision froide et distante, tout en restant vague, ainsi reflétant parfaitement le personnage de Pomme; une fille effacée qu’on oublie dès qu’on tourne le dos. « La jeune fille était d’une pâte facilement malléable, mais avec la propriété de perdre aussitôt l’empreinte qu’on y avait faite. » Une idée intéressante, que la banalité soit au centre de l’oeuvre, mais pas assez captivante pour susciter en moi un véritable intérêt.

A csipkeverő lány - néhol képszerű, néhol dagályos, néhol soviniszta, néhol unalmas. Úgy érzem szinte funkciótlan volt az az 50+ oldal, ahogy eljutottunk a főszereplő kapcsolatának kezdetéig, ami után a gyors végkifejlet rendkívül magával ragadó, sodró, ijesztően megfogható volt. A könyv első fele viszont teljes nihilizmus, kaotikus szóhalmaz, a főszereplő jellemrajzához semmit nem tett hozzá az elhúzott előszó.

Maybe it's not good form to use a modern term for an older novel, but there is a certain anti-Manic-Pixie-ness of Pomme that I really liked. Her plainness, her opacity reveals itself to be a different type of asset. The novel reminded me a lot of Sylvia by Leonard Michael's, but while that is more concerned with the couple as an entity, this flips it over on the other side, giving Pomme a kind of interiority that Aureil is not afforded.

The detatched viewpoint in which this book is written works very well. On the last 50 pages. Before that it works but I did not feel dragged into the book all that much. And that is totally fine, I can safely say that it is one of those books to just read casually, go along with where the ride takes you and then, in the end, look around where you ended up. It ends up in a nice place, because I did indeed like the last 50 pages very much.

Impossible de rentrer dans ce livre. Je n'ai pas de problème avec la stylistique un peu daté avec des phrases alambiquées - au contraire j'aime bien. En revanche la thématique et les descriptions tournées autour de la prostitution et de l'érotisme à répétition c'est non. Pas besoin de rabâcher les mêmes choses à chaque tournure de phrase. J'ai tenu très exactement 33 pages, peut-être que j'aurai dû continuer pour que ça commence à me plaire mais tant pis.

En realidad mis expectativas fueron mayores a lo que encontré en "La encajera", para ser un premio Goncourt (1974) me pareció corto. sin embargo puede ser que este texto fue escrito en 1972.

Se agradece que no fue muy extensa la lectura 113 páginas. El final también me parece que dejo que desear.

La Dentellière est une histoire d'amour tragique, l'histoire d'un amour impossible entre Pomme, une shampouineuse qui vient d'une famille pauvre du Nord, et Aimery de Béligny, étudiant d'une prestigieuse université et issus d'une vielle famille famille aristocratique. Tous les deux inadaptés au monde qui les entoure et qu'ils ne comprennent pas, ils se rencontrent et s'aiment mais accroché l'un à l'autre comme à une bouée, ils ne se comprennent pas, ne se perçoivent que par leur ressenti et leur education, c'est à dire à des années lumière l'un de l'autre.
On est bercé par une belle écriture pour cette histoire d'amour douce amère.

J'ai eu du mal à entrer dans ce roman. Quand j'y suis entrée, il ne restait plus que deux chapitres... je crois que c'est un style très daté aujourd'hui, avec des personnages que l'auteur conçoit explicitement comme loin des lecteurs et difficilement saisissables. J'ai même eu l'impression par moments que le narrateur se contredisait entre les descriptions d'une même scène. Je suppose qu'un travail d'étude littéraire doit être plus intéressant et enrichissant que "la lecture toute bête" du roman.

Aangrijpend boekje. De hoofdpersoon Pomme heeft genoeg aan hoe het leven haar toevalt. Twee 'vrienden' misbruiken haar ongecompliceerdheid om hun eigen levensdrang uit te laten komen en laten haar kapot achter.

A wonderful book! A simultaneously tender and sarcastic variation on the tratidional story of a seduction of a simple girl by an aristocrat. Funny and poetic, sad and subtle. Beautiful.
