Samantha, her dad Chris, and her mum Jackie are survivors of a catastrophic event; an infection has spread, causing a zombie apocalypse across the UK. Things are great, mum's an alcoholic, dad's become obsessed with finding a cure, and Samantha can't get off her vibrator long enough to tell anyone about the weird voices she's been hearing... things are just *great*.
This is a gory, splattery sexfest (with added zombie fun!) I enjoyed this break from the standard shuffling moaners that one usually finds in "infection" type books. Samantha is tragically sexual for a girl of eighteen, and her mother isn't much better at the age of forty-ish, and yet I found myself smiling quite often at them both. My favourite character of all, though, was Philip (if you know, you know).
Along the way with these smarter-than-regular zombies we also see (feel, hear, and smell) a shadowy being in the abandoned house the family have taken over, and I found this to be different too. A haunting in a zombie book? Is that even allowed? (Yes, yes it is and it is goooood.) This adds an extra element of fun and horror to the proceedings which was appreciated greatly.
Is the writing Shakespeare? No. Is it the scariest thing I've ever read? Also no. Was it a hell of a good time and something I'll be reading the rest of the series of? Oh, yes!
Blood, guts, gore, and sex. Lots and lots of sex.
