I was in two minds about whether to go for this book or not. I have read two fabulous books on this topic just last year and I am old enough to know what exactly happened on 9/11. But having the story told in graphic format was a new appeal and so I decided to give this a try. The result? Mixed feelings.

Every adult already knows the details of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Whether you are a US citizen or not, there is no way you could have forgotten the image of the plane smashing into the two towers of the WTC. No matter what nationality you belong to, your life has changed since 9/11/2001, even if you weren’t alive that day. And this graphic novel shows you exactly how!

This book presents the events that day in two perspectives: the actual unfolding of the attacks in New York, and the reactions of the French citizens who were watching it on their TV sets. This happens over the first one-third of the book. The rest of the 150-odd page book depicts the aftermath at a global scale: the implementation of the Vigipirate plan in France, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the increased vigilance by the NSA as revealed by Snowden, the high security surveillance in airports that exists to date… This was more interesting to me as it contained a perspective that 9/11 books don’t usually cover. The overall story is written as a French woman’s reminiscences as she is aboard a plane to New York in 2021 and pondering over the attacks that took place when she was a teenager.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this book. I just kept my fingers crossed that it wouldn’t try to milk out the tragedy or portray it insensitively. Thankfully, neither happens. For those of us who have never seen the inside of the towers, seeing a visualised depiction of the structure of the buildings makes it easier to see the dilemma faced by the people inside and the rescue teams outside.

What I didn’t like was how the story doesn’t go in a chronological order. While it begins in the present, it moves to 2001 within a few pages. And within this 2001 time frame, it keeps going back and forth. For instance, you have the towers collapsing in a panel and the next page goes to a few minutes before the collapse. Or you have the reaction of the French on Sept 12th and then again the narrative moves to Sept. 11th in the US. A sequential narrative would have worked better.

The illustrations are quite simple and with dullish colours. The font is quite stark. Both these points help in focussing on the story rather than being distracted by the vibrancy of the panels.

I think that this book would be a good way for YA readers to know the extent of the attacks and how our world as we knew it changed. This year will mark twenty years since these attacks, and if you don’t know what happened that day, you really ought to. After all, it is one of the few historical events that impacted the entire world. However, the presentation is much too simplistic for adult readers and there are too many jumps in the timeline for a proper informative experience. There are far better adult books that cover the 9/11 attacks in astounding detail. So unless you prefer a graphic novel to a nonfiction book OR unless you want to know more about the repercussions of the attacks than the attacks themselves, I wouldn’t suggest this book to you.

3.5 stars from me, rounding up to 4.

(Adult readers might like to try “The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11” by Garrett M. Graff. My review HERE. But mind you, this is a gut-wrenching read.)

Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for the ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: This dramatized narrative follows a young French woman as she recounts the events surrounding the September 11 attacks and how they affected her life.

My Thoughts: Pacing and Writing (5/5) – I thought the book succeeded in seamlessly switching from portraying the tragic melee as it was occurring, explaining the facts concerning it, and the personal perspective. In some way, it felt like reading a historical fiction account meshed with a documentary which gives the message a more visceral punch. It also helps that the author Baptiste Bouthier is a journalist which can be attributed to the graphic novel’s matter-of-fact writing style. My favorite scene might be the one where two men working in the World Trade Center are escaping the building as it was collapsing due to jarringly serene demeanor towards the whole predicament as they’re casually chatting about their lives which felt like a partial sign of resignation of hope.

Themes and Characters (5/5) – The main French subject Juliette served both as a perfect stand-in for the Millennial generation and second-hand witnesses. The former was old enough to recall the events but too young to grasp the full scope of the incident. Meanwhile, the latter lacks the perspective of the full impact due to being too distant from the crime scene. This point is hammered in a scene where some high-school-aged schoolchildren display a flippant, ignorant attitude towards 9/11 which almost seems like déjà vu as terrorist attacks throughout Europe become rampant as the 2000s and 2010s pass. Being a Gen Zer who didn’t know about 9/11 until the age of 10, that feeling of distance to a relatively recent incident hit harder since it serves as a reminder of how important historic preservation is.

Art (5/5) – The color tones and line art were on the lighter, softer side which, while mitigating the graphic horror throughout the intense scenes, did shin in depicting expressive characters.

Final Thoughts: September 11 is an important work of historical literature that I would highly recommend to younger readers including middle grade and high school students whose entire lives were in a post-9/11 world.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with my first advance ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.

Engels

Sometimes there are such events that are etched in the collective memory. Events of which after many years people still know where they were when the news came in. Baptiste Bouthier and Héloise Chochois have turned one of these events and its aftermath into a graphic novel.

They took the attacks of September 11, 2001 as their starting point. Among the true events they placed a young girl. A girl who shows us how the youth of that time experienced everything. But both artists didn't stop at mentioning the attacks. They went on.

In this way they drew a realistic picture of how the world was changing. Nothing had remained the same and the young people would have to deal with most of it.

Bouthier and Chochois drew a historical line and a present time line. One follows from the attacks, the other Juliette as an adult woman.

The attacks were drawn from the point of view of bystanders, firefighters, police, journalists, people in the WTC towers, etc….

Not only the seriousness of the situation is shown, but also the disbelief of the bystanders. The despair about what is going on now, the confusion and above all the realization .

Politics is discussed, but also the further attacks that still hit the world afterwards. Madrid, Brussels and London.

Matte colors were mainly chosen in this graphic novel. No cheerful bright colors, because these would not fit the story being told.

Conclusion

A reference book that is well suited to show today's young people what happened in that year and after. Show how this has completely changed the world. Recommended.

An interesting look at the events of 9/11, something that is seared into my own memory.

Parts of the book felt a bit disjointed, telling the same action over and over again from different perspectives. This graphic novel won't give you any information that any adult won't know, but it is still worth a reading! Loved the artwork.

Thank You NetGalley and Europe Comics for this ARC!

I received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I try to read everything i can find on 9/11. I am thankful i got the opportunity to read this graphic novel. The depictions of the people, situations and actions taken are well done. I liked that the book showed more than just what happened here in NY. This is great for younger generations who didnt experience 9/11 first hand to see what that day was like. I also liked that specific peoples stories were told, such as Brian Clark and Joseph Pfiffer.
My only criticism is the jumping back and fourth in the timeline. A few times you see the towers collapse but then go back in time to another persons experience. When you go back you are on a different timd period and for someone just learning about the events of that day, it can be confusing.

I don’t think it will ever stop feeling surreal to me that we have now reached a point where kids don’t know what happened on 9/11. Having it done in graphic format felt even stranger. That being said, it’s a good way to teach the younger generations. It’s more accessible to a wider audience and the work is well-done. I recommend it.

This is such a good graphic novel that tackles the events occurred on September 11, 2001 (I was born 8 days after that just sharing).

The creators did a good job in narrating and presenting the events in detailed and also in different perspective that were well done both in conveying the situation on that time but also in the following years conflict that greatly been caused by the past events.

The only thing I didn’t like was the confusing switch of the timeline, and repetitive narrating of the scenes.

Despite that, this is such a good read. Very informative documentation of the September 11, 2001 tragedy.

Everyone know 'what' happened in September 11, 2001. The Twin Tower crash. But few of them know 'How' And 'Why' it happened.
This documentry book is the answer to your How and why.

Not only about the destruction of twin towers of the world trade centre there's also few incident highlighted about global terrorism, attacks and more.

Being a teenager and discovering this tragic event in the perspective of a teenager named Juliette is similar. I would have reacted the same. I stayed up late just to finish this, it was so much intriguing.
It left my heart broken and sore.

applause to the writer and the illustrator who recreated this tragic event as a documentary novel and reached up to us.

I almost didn't read this book. I didn't want to be reminded of what happened, now, 20 years ago.

But, reading it this way, from that of a young French 14-year old school girl, and how she reacted, and how people in France reacted, it gave a whole different perspective, and I kept reading.

And it doesn't just dwell on Sept. 11, but goes on to all the other events that followed, the war, the other terrorist attacks, and ends with her visiting Ground Zero, 20 years hence.

So, yes, hard to read, but very interesting to see it all collected in one story.

Polecam

I really appreciated reading this take on September 11, 2001 and how it affected the world on a global perspective. I think as Americans we really hone in on how it changed us as Americans and less on how it changed the world as a whole. We also don't hear about or realize how our country's actions after 9/11 affected the world. This book really challenged me in that area.

I will agree with a lot of other reviewers and say that the timeline of the book was very wonky. It wasn't cohesive at all and often you had to spend time trying to figure out where in the timeline you were. I also with there wasn't as much swearing in the book. I know that's a personal thing, but if it wasn't for the swearing it could see this being a book I would encourage my kids to pick up just to expand their perspective on 9/11.

Overall a great graphic novel..

September 11, 2001, I found was a difficult read for me, being 43 and living through that day , I watched on TV step by step just as Juliette did with her mum, except I was in the UK not France, I watched as the second plane hit , we never stopped watching for that whole day like a lot of the world and this for me brings back all the fear, the memories, the sadness and devastation. I liked the fact this is being done for a younger generation who grew up in the wake of this tragedy, but also that it looks at the wider consequences of that day and what followed. I did however feel it could have covered more on the persecution that anyone of Arabic descent or looks suffered at the time and since. We get the Views of several on the day, first hand accounts from the inside of the tower, first responders, journalistic photographer and the White House. It’s detailed and should come with a warning, as I found it quite triggering that they drew the people jumping, I had watched this and they’ve never shown it since on TV out of respect, I don’t think that it should be drawn either, at the least it should have a warning before they do ! It is a very good and strong read and will help in educating generations that weren’t there and others that have been naive to the affects it had and things those attacks caused in the world. Go in with a prepared mind though.

This was a powerful read. I don’t know what I expected. I first thought that this would be only about the events that took place in Manhattan. But it wasn’t. This was a thorough look at the events that took place on September 11, 2001, and all the connected events that followed.

I remember where I was when this happened. I think I will remember for the rest of my life.

Thanks to the Europe Comics for the ARC and the opportunity to read this! All opinions are my own.

September 11, 2001 is a very well done and educational approach to introducing the facts and stories from the 9/11 attack. Its odd to say that the artwork was beautiful when the topic being illustrated is so complicated, but the limited color pallet and intense shading lend the appropriate tone to each separate personal account. This is a graphic I would highly suggest to anyone who knows or wants to know more about September 11 and the timeline of that fateful day.

Thank you to NetGalley for making this book available to give an honest reivew. I have given September 11, 2001: The Day the World Changed Forever by Baptiste Bouthier, Illustrated by Hélöise Chochois three out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I cannot believe it’ll be 20 years since September 11, 2001 this year. I had to admit I found it difficult to rate this book and almost didn’t read it due to the tragic events that are covered within this graphic novel and was unsure whether the author would be able to tackle this event well, instead of it being insensitive. The author managed to narrate this story well and the information given was very important especially for those who are unaware or not thoroughly educated on what happened during the terrorist attacks mentioned in this book. I liked the illustrations in this graphic novel; they definitely played a big part visually when I found myself feeling upset when reading this book.

This book follows the events from September 11, 2001 through the eyes of a French high school student who remembers the day it happened. I thought this was an interesting way to portray their story and to take the reader along with them whilst she recalls how things unfolded around her in France. I was a little confused at times by the timeline of events, I ended up going back a few pages to find that the year of the timeline was in the top part of the graphic strip however, the font isn’t very big so it took me a while to realise this. I appreciated that they included a lot of people’s names who survived and died during September 11, 2001 as I thought it respected those people by remembering them.

This books was very hard hitting and although I was six years old when the terrible world changing terrorist attack happened on September 11, 2001, I do have vague memories of it happening however, over the years I have learnt more about this devastating time. I found it very emotional revisiting those emotions and feelings through this graphic novel as well as the other terrorist attacks mentioned in this book.

I think this graphic novel is a good way for all readers, for the pure reason of understanding the extent of what happened during these attacks and the impact it has led for our world to change as we know it today.

9/11 in Comicform?

It's interesting to see the world view on the events of 9/11. Having been here, we were inundated with news of the events and it became a singular focus with good reason. Seeing the effect it had on others was fascinating. I know it shouldn't be surprising to see how evil acts are horrifying to all but the politics involved were portrayed as bullying, which I guess I can understand, and maybe somewhat agree. The events were portrayed accurately and the illustrations were well done.
