I couldn’t be happier to read and review one of the most anticipated thrillers of 2022! A brilliant, smart, and intriguing psychological thriller from Hendricks & Pekkanen! Of course, I’m thanking my lucky stars for the exclusive chance to read it early!
My favorite thriller duo has done it again! They’ve written an engaging, slow-burn, character-driven story by creating one of the most fascinating fictional characters: Avery. She has now become one of my all-time favorite heroines!
Let me tell you more about her: Avery Chambers is a sharp-witted, reckless, and snarky therapist—a unique blend of fixer and private investigator. She detects everything about your life, unearthing secrets you didn’t even realize you were keeping, and voilà: she pieces you back together, carefully fixing your broken parts.
Though this book was a bit long and started more like contemporary fiction than a thriller, once things heat up in the first half, Avery’s sheer presence, her unorthodox methods, stalker-ish tendencies, mind games, and sharp wit hook you from the beginning. I have to admit, her character and backstory were far more compelling than the so-called “Golden Couple,” the Bishops.
Marissa, the wife of the Golden Couple, hires Avery to fix their marriage. She knows Avery’s license was revoked, but a friend highly recommended her. The Washington Post even published an intriguing interview about her and her unusual methods. Who cares if they breach privacy, as long as they work, right? Avery guarantees to fix the marriage in ten sessions.
But their first encounter with Avery doesn’t go smoothly! Marissa sucker-punches her husband with a surprise therapy session (the poor guy doesn’t even know they’re going to see a marriage counselor!). But the real punch is her confession: she slept with a younger man from the gym! Poor Matthew goes berserk! Thankfully, Avery is there and reassures them they’re in good hands.
But what if both parties are keeping secrets? Well, don’t worry, Avery has eyes and ears everywhere, and she eventually uncovers every dirty detail!
Meanwhile, Avery also deals with threats from a powerful pharmaceutical company, Acelia—the same company she anonymously reported to the FDA for misconduct in their drug trials, which had a high risk of fatal outcomes. Now, they want her to be their snitch, trying to find out how she got the information.
These two mysteries keep your interest piqued, and the ending is smart. Some revelations are predictable, but the final twist is still well-executed.
The writing is engrossing, the characters are well-developed, multi-layered, and easy to relate to.
This may not be my favorite book from the duo, but it’s still a smartly written psychological thriller/mystery with great characterization. They never disappoint!
