a compilation of life experiences that taught me to love and dealt me plenty of loss that inevitably lead up to the infinite aftermath.
this journey of surviving through poetry a walk through my life a passage into my mind my heart in your hands a bittersweet release through the life love loss & infinite aftermath
This is a book quite unlike any I have read before. It was a recommendation. It is a compilation of the life experiences of the author through life, love and loss. Because this is unlike anything I have read before I have also read this book in a very different way. In some ways it feels like reading diary. Some pages literally only contain a handful of words. Although some pages may be very sparse a message in them is often very deep. As a result reading a single entry can have you spend the rest of the day contemplating it. For those who have had less than perfect relationships much of this will be familiar, conversely if you have had mostly happy relationships this could also be an affirmation of your good fortune. In one of the entries the author asks, can you learn from your mistakes while simultaneously repeating them?
Poetry derives meaning from the unsaid, or fewer words put together to express a plethora of thoughts and manifest myriad colours; joy, sorrows, regrets, love, longing, hope, nostalgia and much more. It revolves around the strings that touch our hearts subtly, the same I felt while reading this book.
There are vivid poems about gratitude, friendship, love, joy, behaviour, environment, culture, family and its intricacies, memories, relationships and much much more. While some poems are short, some are long. The author has used multiple formats and forms of poetry.
While most of the poems carry a free and liberal expression, I have a couple of them that I read twice and are my favourites. One of them is ‘Upbringing’, which portrays how upbringing in our family and the core belief system shapes us and our mindset. Another is ‘Masculine me’, which is short yet beautiful and touchy.
(excerpt) Page 43: ‘...beauty can bloom in the darkest of places therein lies the inner workings of trauma...’
I liked the way the earnest feelings and thoughts mixed with repent, regret, hope, thankfulness, love, learning, pain and much more than the poems uphold, making it all in all a good poetry collection. There are some poems which are intense enough to be read again and again as it resonates with your life. The book is indeed one that is recommended to the poetry lovers out there. Adding to it, the cover is aesthetically pleasing!
I cannot stress it enough- this is an outstanding book of poetry. I’ve come to believe that the quality of the work is up to the reader. This poet effortlessly held connection between each of the four sections it is comprised out of. Life (upbringing) love (passion) loss (traumatically relatable (& the infinite aftermath (everything you wish you could’ve put into words) whether the page was only a sentence or a longer piece trickles down onto the next page. It is genuinely commendable that RLY put this out into the ether- it is bold, it is harsh, it is beautiful. It may honestly be my favorite poetry book to date. I have read it so many times that I’ve lost track but every time I feel something new or catch something else- it is profound and I highly recommend.
Ugh. I wasn’t even going to write a review but the second to last poem in this book basically said that the author invites any criticism.
I simply just feel this author is not a good poet. I did appreciate the fact that the poems kind of weaved themselves into some sort of life story. But, many of these poems read like things the author texted someone late at night when she was drunk. I preferred the poems without a rhyming scheme though, as the ones that had a rhyming scheme read especially juvenile.
This would be a 1 star but for the narrative weaved throughout and but for the few small profound nuggets within.
Go and buy this book if you ever felt lost in your life, felt unacceptable and unappreciated. This book will give you a new breath, understanding that you are not alone in your thoughts and pain. This is book is about me, you and a neighbour next door. Enjoy and embrace it. There is so much to learn and gain through Rly’s writing process. There’s hope for us yet!
