The danger, the secrets, and the lies leave Olivia wondering if there’s anyone above the waves or below she can trust. It’s been over a year since San Diego. Now attending college at the University of Maryland, Olivia has new friends and a promising marine biology internship. But moving on from her past proves a lot harder than she expected. Burdened by loneliness, Olivia can’t shake the feeling that there’s something else for her. Something more. Then, during one of her regular visits to the aquarium, a mysterious woman approaches Olivia…a woman with gills and purple fingernails. Olivia answers the woman’s plea for help without question—surely a simple rescue will show Eamon O’Dell she’s ready to join him and the others on their tasks to aid merpeople. But what should have been a good deed has set off a series of deadly attacks that put Olivia in mortal danger and change everything she thought she knew about the merworld. Trusted friends have become little more than strangers. New enemies arise with lethal prejudices. And an old flame returns to protect Olivia, making her question her place in this strange world and threatening to crumble the walls she has reinforced around her heart. In this next installment of the Fathom Serioes, tensions between humans and merpeople are at an all-time high and someone is pulling the strings to further damage the tenuous peace that Eamon and his friends have worked hard to build. If Olivia can’t find out who’s behind it all—and convince the merworld council known as CHASM to maintain alliances with humans—her life, and the lives of everyone she loves, are forfeit.
Perfect! They ride Liv goes on is so intense. I was so heartbroken for her as well because Sam is so close yet so far away. Everyone needs a best friend like Sam close by.
An awesome, high paced sequel. If you love mermaids, collage life and a touch of clean romance this read is for you! I’m looking forward to the next one in the series. —love that mermaids have to drink water.
This mermaid urban fantasy series is great! I really enjoyed reading this book!
I had such a hard time putting this book down when my kids woke up! It has a little bit of everything, including suspense, mystery, romance, and a great setting. I didn’t know who to trust or what was going to happen, and the ending was both great and suspenseful, so I can’t wait for the third book to come out in January!
One thing I loved about this book is how layered Olivia’s emotions are. There’s a lot going on in her life, and as such her emotions are pretty complex. Everything was really well-written, and I felt for Olivia and what she was going through. I also liked that some of the characters visited Old Town Alexandria during the story! One of my college roommates took engagement photos of my husband and I there, so it was really exciting to see the characters in that area.
I really enjoyed reading this book, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next for Olivia!
Great writing but didn't grip me as much as the first one
The first book in this series gripped me and I read it straight through in one night. I lost sleep over that one...in a good way. I was excited to read this one, but it didn't affect me in the same way. It took me months to get through and I skimmed a bunch of it to get through it.
I'm not 100 percent sure why I didn't like this one as much. I think some of it may have been the romance drama. The romance just didn't feel natural, especially for their age. It felt like she was acting more like a sixteen or seventeen year old than the young adult she was supposed to be. I think I also missed her relationship with Samantha.
I like books that make me feel both laughter and seriousness. This book felt more like pure drama all the way through. It was draining to me. I was also a bit frustrated with the musinformation at the beginning. The author refers to her beta fish as an invertebrate. Fish are vertebrates, not invertebrates. Maybe if the main character wasn't supposed to be studying ocean creatures this wouldn't have bothered me. But the main characted is supposed to be an expert on marine life. Calling a fish an invertebrate as a wanna be marine biologist is a big mistake. I'm surprised no one caught that in editing.
The writing style an ability of the author remains great. This book just didn't catch me like the first one did. I'll still read the last book and finish up the series, but I'll probably wait a few months to do so.
Excellent second book in the series! It moves the plot along well without just being filler and left me wanting to read the finale immediately, which I did!
