I'll admit that I like Minervini's books, his writing style, and his investment advice. Anyone who has been an Investor's Business Daily and William O'Neil fan over the years will recognize those influences in Minervini's very successful trading strategies. His writings always seem like a "tweak" of CAN SLIM. That's really not a bad idea.
He states in this book that there is material contained in this book that was not included in his first book, due to time/space/page/etc. constraints so his books should be considered as part of a multi-volume set in order to get the full picture of his trading style, story, and advice.
Last, I've stated before that there are some books that are worth re-reading. This is one of them. If he authors another book in the future, then I'm sure that I'll be a customer.
No new concepts, just additional information that didn't make it in his first book. I consider both books very useful and incomplete if you read only one. They should be read as two parts of the same book.
A must read for all traders. This is a fantastic book for traders that really does feel like it has been written by a trader.
I've read quite a number of books on trading and this book comes closest to having a real mentor, giving you practical advice.
I like how the book is focused around Mindset, Routine, Habits and Pitfalls of traders instead of just strategies. Also the author firmly believes that everyone can achieve success through discipline and hours, months and years of effort.
Coupled with Mark Minervini's previous book, this is a good book to read regularly (once a year) for traders!
I think in terms of technical tips, Minervini book is way behind Al Brook's, but his tips on mindset, risk management, and all around "take care of yourself if you want an elite perform" are worth the read.
This books offers a balanced amount of concepts and practical tips. Even offers a few system setups. A nice, practical read after having a good understanding of the technicals and psychology of trading.
Mark's first book and second book should be read together to better understand the SEPA concept and his trading psychology. But I felt the second book was mostly summary of first book and only Selling of stocks (How, When and Where) is mostly useful in this book...rest of the material is copy of first book...anyway still this book is one of best for trading.
I've been following this guy for years, even met his nephew once in Connecticut.
There are only 3 stock traders I follow and Mark's story and his attitude really struck a chord with me. I follow him on Twitter (I don't even use Twitter), I read his blog, etc. I knew this book was going to be good and it doesn't disappoint. I'm planning on reading it again sometime after the new year. I'm doing the Goodreads challenge to read 35 books in 2018 and I'm a little behind....otherwise I'd probably start this book right over and read it again right now.
I'll be ordering Mark's earlier book and reading that one soon as well.
If you're into stock trading, read this book!
***Update 2024*** Read this again, just a couple days faster than I read it 6 years ago. I'm happy with that! This is an excellent book, even though I don't use the type of strategy Minervini uses. Though someday I might try this type of strategy, as I do believe swing traders capture larger moves and ultimately make more money. Great book!
This is Minervini's second book. It, along with his first, Trade Like A Stock Market Winner, make for a great foundation for anyone interested in investing in individual stocks. Both, more or less, expand on William J O'Neil's How To Make Money In Stocks. Read O'Neil first, then these two.
Various techniques are essential when one embarks on trading as a career. This isn't for the casual trader who dabbles occasionally and neglects their portfolio. It begins with how and why to pick a stock, outlining the criteria for selection. Concepts such as volatility and contraction patterns are introduced. Once you've decided on a stock, it's crucial to record the parameters that influenced your decision, find a good entry point, and meticulously track your position until you close it out, analyzing the reasons behind your actions.
The book advises adopting a risk-first approach, clearly understanding the risks involved. It emphasizes setting close stop losses and maintaining a logbook for every trade, analyzing each one. This eye-opening exercise, which some might have done sporadically, is proposed as a habitual practice—day in and day out—for every trade. The goal is to learn from each lesson and maintain a comprehensive trading playbook.
I enjoyed the book and tried applying some of its principles practically. However, I quickly realized it demands significant time, energy, and interest. While I'm currently taking a break, I plan to return with more disciplined trading in the future. It's certainly a good book that I recommend to anyone aspiring to become a trader; it offers invaluable insights into tackling this challenging endeavor.
For many years i read so many book about investment, but most of the content i read is on topic of Value investment and fundamental investment. I used to think that technical analysis or graph-based speculation are just a way of gambling. Until i start reading some books on this topic, i found that when i open my mind and start to practice this strategy, it help me improve my investment return and especially make me more calm when facing unexpected event.
This book is by far my 4th or 5th books in this topic, and it is so good that make me see a clear picture in a many question that i don’t understand reading others before.
In short, Risk-Reward planning and buy-selling point are key concept.
You don’t need to read the first book if you read this. It zeros in on all the things that are important to a trader and expand on those things. Minervini’s approach to everything is very scientific and convincing. The best chapter is the one on result based assumption (section 4). It will make you face up to the reality of your performance, and awaken you to the changes to you need to make to improve. What Minervini preaches here is probably not the kind of stuff that sells trading books (like patterns, entries and exits) but it is the one chapter that will give you longevity in your trading career. Minervini is a proven consistent winner in his field. If you are serious about trading full time, no reason not to do as he does.
In a vacuum, this book is amazing! Minervini's style of writing is really simple, which is great to understand complex concepts like portfolio positioning, risk management etc
Unfortunately, because I read his first book as well (and re-read it just before I took on this one), this book becomes quite repetitive. Some sections are even verbatim copy of the previous book. Probably the last couple of sections are the real value added if you read his first book.
If you haven't read his first book, this one is great, filled with lots of insights. Although I'd still recommend reading both. Fully get into the first one and skim over the first 60% ish of this one.
I really enjoyed it. My peculiar interest in reading this book was in psychological advice, since I don't trade Stocks. Not only that, I have my own strategy and I'm in no way interested in eyeing other technical possibilities. Still, when the psychological chapters came to an end and the author started writing about his technical operativity I was so captivated that I kept reading until the end, even though I was reading through information I knew I wouldn't have used.
The explanation of even more complex formulas and mathematical advice was quite simple to digest and the overall style is very pleasurable. Nonetheless, outstanding insights are provided.

An excellent book to shape the mind of a trader 1. The book introduces the most factor that every trader need to keep in mind whenever place a trade: risk/reward ratio. How to calculate risk/reward for each trade? How much risk is appropriate for an account? Available in this book. 2. Mark Minervini has developed all traditional patterns such as cup and handle, double bottom, flat base, into a new concept: Volatility Contraction Pattern (VCP). I highly appreciate this idea for it provides both trader and investor a new look into constructing process of a stock in chart. Good book for begginer
Contrary to popular opinion, I read this second book of his first, rather than the first one: Trade like Stock Market Wizard. I'm just too itchy for this 2nd book as they say it was the best. Though there were unfamiliar terms, such as the SEPA System, it didn't hinder me from understanding the concept I was learning.
All I can say is I hope I read this long before. Learned a lot! I should always go with a plan.
For a long time, I didn't read about Trading (an area in Finance). I knew Mark about 1 year ago and this book didn't make me disappointed. Mark is a principal and generous man when he shared many experiences for other people. His principles are very short and centroid but not too easy to understand if you haven't ever practiced in stock market. I studied many lessons about life and the phase of career for anyone. A good book.
In THINK & TRADE LIKE A CHAMPION, famed investor Mark Minervini unlocks the lessons he acquired over several decades to become a trading super performer. Minervini describes both the mindset needed to succeed, as well as the trading rubric needed to identify market opportunities and properly manage risk. His infectious appetite for growth, combined with a winning formula for trading success, is suffused on every page of this book.
As others have mentioned, this truly is a pt 2 for Mark’s first book. It’s not only that he shares his process but he explains the reasoning so you fully understand which serves as invaluable learning for the reader. Mark is a fantastic writer and excellent motivator behind serving as an example with his success. I will be reading his books at least once per year for the foreseeable future. Hands down the best investing books I have ever read
This is my favorite technical book on trading yet. Goes very much more in depth than his first book, giving me the details I crave. So much of what is in this book has shaped my current trading strategy. His writing is motivational, concise, and to the point. I have so much of this book hi-lighted and book marked, routinely referencing it throughout my trading.
I’ve been trading off and on for years now and have struggled with the mental aspect and consistency. Wish I had read this one way earlier on. I got something valuable out of every chapter but the last chapter really hit it home for me. I would recommend this book to any trader, it’s one that I will keep and reference often.
The problem was this Book is more than 50% a copy of his first book “ trade like a stock market wizard”. That’s why I just gave it 3 stars. It’s a fabulous book if you read it first but if you read his first book and then afterwords this one you realize that he copied way too much material from his First book.
I found this book really helpful to improve the trading. I feel all points mentioned in this book are actually true. I just related my past performance during reading this book and found that, whenever I followed the rules given in this book, my results were better. Thanks Mark...
If the first 10 chapters are the pieces to the model, the last chapter "The Champion Trader Mindset" is the glue. Read the last chapter first to determine if you have mental and physical characteristics to develop yourself or even have the temperament to actually do this. The Stock Market will expose your every mental weakness. Mark does not hold back. Buckle up Buttercup.
This book is a remarkable companion to Mark's first work. The concluding chapter, which presents a fascinating dialogue between Mark and Jairek on the intricacies of Mindset, significantly elevates its value. It invites readers to explore deeper insights that extend well beyond the technical details, making it a truly enriching experience.
Fantastic addition to “Volume 1” with key points reiterated and new concepts introduced. An absolute must-read for the trader who wants to learn more and further develop their trading practice.
