In the 27th century, war is the continuation of business by other means.
MegaCorporations are scattered across dozens of colonized systems. They hire disposable contractors for whatever needs to be done. Paragon Savage Genetics is one such MegaCorporation. They are the undisputed masters of gene-splicing who are now cloning animal-hybrid ‘genie’ sicarios for rent or sale.
Selina ‘Ocelot’ Linares is their latest product.
La Republica del Escobar’s government is Paragon Savage’s biggest client. As the corrupt regime careens closer and closer to a civil war, Ocelot and her fellow genies are contracted to work for Presidente Vasquez.
When the situation grows too hot, though, rival MegaCorp Apex Energy hires Myrmidons, Inc. to extract their VIPs and demolish the facility. And if the Myrmidons can hit Paragon Savage on the side and extract a little paydata, well, that’s just business…
Jamie Ibson is a new writer from the frozen wastelands of Canuckistan, where moose, bears, and geese battle for domination among the hockey rinks, igloos, and Tim Hortons.
After joining the Canadian army reserves in high school, he spent half of 2001 in Bosnia as a peacekeeper and came home shortly after 9/11 with a deep sense of foreboding. After graduating college, he landed a job in law enforcement and was posted to the left coast from 2007 to 2021. He retired from law enforcement in early 2021 and moved clear across the country to write full time in the Maritimes.
He published a number of short stories in 2018 and 2019, and his first novel came out in January 2020. He’s pretty much been making it up as he goes along, although he has numerous writer friends who serve as excellent role-models, mentors, and, occasionally, cautionary tales.

We begin solely on a planet and take our first steps into this world through the eyes of a gen-enhanced corporate infiltrator/assassin, take your pick... named Selina. She grew in-vitro and got out of the tank with a head full of knowledge but as much practical experience about life as a new-born... We see her train, get her first missions. We also see her develop a conscience and reflect of her condition as a "product" instead of a being, in the hands of a corporation. In this world, Corporations and contracts rule and even though there is a state, its power is constrained by the limits of contracts... The planet Escobar is about to erupt in a civil war and Selina is busy taking contracts for the local government... as a genie (gene-enhanced) with catgenes... she is quite deadly.. At the same time, enter the Myrmidons, tasked by a government of another planet AND a corporation to go pick up diplomats and corporate people stranded on Escobar as civil war erupts. The Myrmidons are full cyborg. Only their brains remain.. More or less their whole body was replaced by robotic elements. They were all volunteers and all dying from uncurable diseases. They are tough, they are deadly, they are well-equipped but they are only 8... At some point in the story, Selina and the Myrmidons will come into contact. As friends ? Foes? Competitors?
There have been stories about corporate greed. There have been stories about cyborgs. There have been stories about gene manipulated warriors and assassins. However there has not been a story that combines them into a scenario of a conflict between corporations and governments that threatens the very fabric of civilization. Until now. A wonderful read.
Cyborgs and enhanced humans – Rhinos, panthers, and Ocelots – oh, my:->
Growing up is hard, especially if you are “product” and an assassin:-< “Life” can also be hard if you an “old, meatless” cyborg. But life without honor isn’t really life at all – just existence. This is a very fun book with a strong moral theme that transports you to an alternate reality yet keeps you grounded in right and wrong. Enjoy the read!
Space opera and genetic manipulation. These characters, Ocelot and the Myrmidons are absolutely captivating. Mega corps are as you would expect. So glad there's more stories to read!
