So my complaint with the previous volume is that things were moving slowly and things do happen in this volume! Sort of! We get some apparent closure with the divorce saga, we see fallout with Kazuomi's family, and we see the new Akari love triangle competition firming up. This is a much better paced, although still a bit too dreamy, volume in the series.

This volume packed a whallop! Akari and Inui are working hard on the future they want, with various walls in the way. They try hard to work through them in this volume. Inui has a hard road right now. His family is very strict in what they want for him, and it's not what he wants. Akari wants to make changes, and learn to speak up for herself. She wants to start with her mom, but the timing always feels off.
I can't wait to see what happens in the next volume.

Akari and Kazuomi have been circling one another for a while and yet they don’t seem to be able to make the leap to dating. Now Akari’s ex, Ryosuke, is circling as well and you might think the situation is about to come to a head, but you’d be depressingly wrong…
As much as I admire Io Sakisaka’s skill, there is no getting around the fact that she is a master of dragging a story beat out as long as possible. Sometimes this works and she makes some high drama out of it, but not this time and it’s the rare full stumble of a volume for me.
The one word I would use to describe this volume is repetitive. The divorce angle is back, Akari and Kazuomi are talking but not talking, Ryosuke is on the prowl. I just gave you a summary of all of the last volume AND this one except there isn’t enough Rio and Yuna to balance it out (Rio’s constant badgering of Kazuomi to do something does make him an amusing audience surrogate though).
Yes, small steps are taken, but there doesn’t feel like anywhere near enough plot momentum for 150+ pages. It really feels like you could go from volume 9 to 11 and you would barely notice.
Ryosuke seems like he’s got a point to make, but he overplays his hand way too fast and comes across like a possessive dink by the end of things. He’s very obviously just pushing the interpretation of things that benefits him, so Akari even considering it makes her seem woefully naive.
The big bright spot happens to be Kazuomi’s ne’er-do-well brother, who bothers to call and apologize for dumping his little bro in the soup. He makes it clear that his intention was to achieve the exact opposite, so he at least feels slightly bad for how things went.
Of course, when Kazuomi does try to stand up for what he wants (and boy can he not read a room), he gets seriously smacked for his troubles, which doesn’t do much for his lingering confidence.
Which all combines to largely end the book in the same place it started. At least Akari figures out the divorce and somebody properly singles her mom out as a butt.
2.5 stars and I will round up because of my respect for Io Sakisaka, but this volume is the one thing I never, ever expected from her: it’s boring.

3,5 (in-between "I liked it" and "I really liked it", so "I quite liked it?")
I said in a prior volume that it felt to me like Sakisaka-sensei built this series cast and story around Akari, but after these four chapters one begins to wonder if it was around Kazu instead. Maybe it was around the both of them. The reason I say this is that while I really like Yuna and Rio too, both as a couple and as individual characters, it's true that Akari's and Kazu's personal journeys carry more weight overall. However, I think it was a good call to feature a quartet of characters, because I don't think A&K would be able to carry this series alone.
So why do I say this? Well, they are your typical Sakisaka couple that are clearly into each other but that let misunderstandings get in their way. And this can get old. This is where Yuna and Rio enter the picture: although it takes them 6 volumes to get together, their relationship is way more straightforward. Their personal problems are also more "simple", but still relatable (Yuna's shyness and insecurities, Rio's feelings). Plus, they are cute together.
So while Akari and Kazu take their time to get together and resolve their issues, we get to see Yuna and Rio being adorable and lovey-dovey from time to time. I really liked here how much Rio loves Yuna's caring side, for example. To be honest, I think this is the main reason he fell in love with her, since that moment in volume 1 when Yuna defends Akari in front of everyone clearly left an impact on him, and all those times he confided her feelings to her also helped.
And speaking of confiding into each other, that's one big part of A&K's relationship, and one that Ryousuke puts into question. While Akari and Kazu are completely honest in those moments, it's true that they hesitate to take one step beyond for various reasons. This hesitation to speak one's feelings, this "is the timing good or bad?", is a theme of Sakisaka's mangas. Aoha Ride did, after all, revolve all around this (Kou not telling his mom how much he appreciated her, Futaba and Kou not being honest with each other and a long etcetera...). In furifura we have: Rio not telling Akari his feelings until they burst out, Akari and Ryousuke not being honest with each other, Akari not being honest with her mom (important relationship, this one), Akari not being honest with Kazu, nor with her friends, and a freaking long etcetera.
And, as I said earlier, this is where Yuna and Rio enter and why it was such a good idea to include them: Yuna is shy and introverted, but she's very honest with herself and others. She can't lie, she's not subtle at all, she's sincere and she can't hide what she feels. Seeing Yuna being like this helped Akari to open herself too.
So, in short, another good volume at hand. I guess I'm getting old for this kind of shôjo manga, since I think my younger self would have rated it higher. But I still enjoyed it a lot because of the complexity of the characters, their feelings and the beautiful drawings. I also appreciate how well-planned everything is. There are many details in earlier chapters that I only notice now, and everything is seamlessly intertwinned.
Only two more volumes left.
(Edit: I forgot to talk about Kazu!! Well, I don't know what to say except that his character arc also aligns with this "be honest with yourself and others about your feelings and needs" theme. It's also a very Japanese situation, the one he faces, that reminds me of Kou's arc.)

Picking up the series after a while and just before the live action movie comes out, Omoi Omoware vol. 10 focuses on Akari rather than Yuna and explores her love triangle between her new love interest and her old boyfriend. To be honest, I like Akari, but her story is so so compared to Yuna's and Rio's. In her arc, she loses her dynamic character and kind of feels 'small' and easily forgotten. Not my fav volume.

I’m still amazed that I like this series as much as I do. I am so glad I gave it another chance after not caring for the first two volumes. The characters are just really lovable to me now.

Solid storytelling.
Delightful as always. Lovely art. Beautiful paneling. The story is moving along nicely. The pushy ex needs to take a hike. But what I loved most about this volume was the various personal anecdotes by the mangaka, especially the last one about her notebooks. She makes me laugh.

Terminei esse volume muito contente por já ter comprado o próximo, porque meu deus viu, seria triste ter que esperar meses para saber o que vai acontecer.
Conforme as coisas vão se encaminhando pro fim - afinal, depois desse tem apenas dois volumes para acabar a história -, tanto a Akari quanto o Kazu vão tomando mais iniciativa sobre seus sentimentos e um possível relacionamento. Mas eles ainda são lentos demaaais! 😭 Eu perdoo porque eu realmente tô gostando muito da forma como eles estão se aproximando, tirando essa lentidão toda.
Mal posso esperar pra ver o que vai acontecer depois do cliffhanger que ficou no último capítulo desse volume!

Ohhhh I was bored reading this volume! It hurts me to even say that. I love this series!!! But I’m sick of Akari and Inui dancing around their feelings!!!! I guess since the mangaka let Yuna and Rio be together first, she’s dragging out the other two’s story…. And I think there’s only 2 volumes left!!!

This volume felt slower than previous volumes, but the tone of this volume was much deeper than previous ones. There was no super cute romance moment (well, one, but it wasn't "prolonged" I should say) that had me on an emotional high nor was the romance really super the focus of this volume.
Sure, Ryosuke is really making it known to Akari that he wants to date her again, but with the looming potential divorce, it is really weighing heavy on everyone. In fact, my favorite moment of this volume was not a romantic one, but when Yuna voices what she can do to be there for Akari and encourages her at multiple points that she (Akari) DOES have a choice. That even if the situation is outside of her control, that doesn't mean she can't voice her feelings or tell certain people what she hopes will happen. It seemed like such a profound thought to Akari and so deeply grateful that Yuna spoke up and told her.
One thing I have felt with all the series I've read by Io Sakisaka is that her characters feel so real and life-life. The decisions they make aren't ones I always approve of, but they feel like what an ACTUAL person would do. While I didn't disagree exactly with anyone's decision here, seeing Akari's struggle and hearing her voice certain things made her seem so very real. There was a scene where she is on her bed and she is so upset at herself…and she gets a message from someone who could change everything so she leaves to meet them.
I don't know what Akari will do. I admire her so much for wanting to "overcome" the "obstacles" in her life and be there for Kazu, but it hurts too.
And not just for her, but for Kazu as well. He had so much focus and spotlight in this volume and felt my heart hurting for him a lot!
This definitely felt like a harder volume to read (even though I feel I read this volume the fastest recently) but no less incredible than the other volumes. I am continually amazed at how layered and rich this story is.

“Everyone is really good … at coming up with reasons why they couldn’t have done something … after the fact.”I’m liking the progression with who Akari will love. Her parents maybe divorcing is still hanging in the air, and Akari’s feelings are muddled as ever. I said this before but I’m finding Yuna and Rio sickly sweet like that one high school couple who blocks the lockers because they’re too busy hugging or tonguing each other; now, those two are still sweet and wholesome, but Akari’s plight is just way more interesting now.
And Ryosuke’s a likeable love rival but very blunt. In this volume, he's coming off a bit pushy tho. Still, I love how he’s doesn’t have time for Inui’s flamboyant declarations lol. Be about it or shut up. It’s rare to see any development in a love rival, but Ryosuke shows growth this volume. He’s more earnest about his feelings and regrets that he wasn’t sooner.

Akari and Inui keep dancing around their feelings, but it's not because they can't bring themselves to confess...it's because they that the other has issues they're dealing with. Akari is worried her mom will divorce Rio's dad and make her move away. Inui is dealing with the fallout that was his brother Soto running off to England.
It's complicated and I want to tear my hair out because they won't just come out and say it, but at the same time, I get it. When you understand that other people have lives that are just as complicated as yours, especially someone you care about, you want to do everything to help and not add more to their plate. Also, Akari is a mood, right now.
This series has 12 volumes.

I'll be honest, if it wasn't for that last chapter, this volume probably would've only been a 3 star for me. Chapter 40 really brought out the big guns, to the point that I started to get a little glassy eyed (especially because of what happened to poor Inui T-T). I so happy that Akari and Inui have finally decided to start doing something, I just hope that we can finally get a proper confession, because we've been waiting for these two to ante up for faaaar too long lol. Also, can we talk about how great of a friend Yuna is? She's so incredibly adorable!

I like how this volume focused on Akari and Kazu on a personal level of how they want their future to be despite all the hardships they face.
Even Ryosuke's character I appreciate despite his bluntness. He says it as it is, and is very mature. From an outside pov it doesn't look so good for Akari and Kazu because it's like their running in circles with their feelings. Someone needs to express how they really are feeling for them to actually have a relationship. But then Ryosuke got a bit overbearing near the end when talking with Akari.
On to the next volume~

love these characters! the first time i read this part, i weren’t really attached to the character in this specific volumes aka akari, inui, and ryosuke.
so it didn’t like intrigued as much as roi and yuna, they are just so cute!
but now reading this again, I could see the deep topic it’s trying to discuss and I really like how it is portray. ryosuke make some good points.

The students at our school have finished the Blue Flag series and wanted something new so I tested this out as an arc. It has all the elements they enjoy...a group of friends, complicated relationships, teen angst, cute illustrations. The bonus for me is that there is nothing inappropriate and I can happily approve it for our library.

What do I need to do to get the next manga in this series ? Who do I need to fight, possibly rob, to get to it ? Ill do it. Don’t underestimate my love for Akari and Kazuomi 😭

Everything gets more confusing, huh? In this book, Akari is worried about her parents divorcing AND her old boyfriend Ryosuke wants her back. Rio and Yunatalk things out and things are going okay. Kazu is having trouble at home but hides it from everybody. just like Akari. (perfect for each other, am i right?)

Yuna was brillanit standing up to Akari and Rio's mom like she did. She has really changed through out the series and she has gained so much confidence and courage.
