This book was the high-fantasy book I was looking for. Short, easy to read, with an interesting plot, a great cast of characters and a true villain. What more can I ask for?

What to expect:
∘ Adult High-Fantasy
∘ Romance
∘ Dual POV
∘ Kickass heroine
∘ Royalty
∘ Magic
∘ Dark Entities
∘ Betrayals & Manipulation
Tropes:
∘ Enemies to Lovers
∘ Childhood friends
∘ Found family

Summary
Twelve years ago Shaye's world is turned upside down. In the present she's just living her life, traveling the world and enjoying everything the life has to give.
When a darkness starts spreading in Asterion, the newly crowned King has to track her down. Being the last living Druid, she just may be their last chance in stopping this darkness that threatens to swallow them all.
Shaye must get over the fact that Sorin's father slaughtered her family, in order to help him and the kingdom that's always been her home.

Plot/Writing
Embarking in a quest to find the artifact that can help them save the kingdom of Asterion, their path isn't an easy one.
The stakes are high. Dark entities are waiting on the side, ready to stop them.
I enjoy a good adventure story and this was one of the few I read in a long time.
This story is fast paced and captivating, not easy to put down.

Worldbuilding
I have to admit, when I saw how short this high-fantasy is, I thought for a moment "I don't think this is going be such a good one, but let's give it a try". I'm glad I decided to, because this was such a good book!
Amazing and beautifully detailed worldbuilding. The magic system well described and easy to understand. Creatures that may give you nightmares.

Characters
Shaye
This woman is such a strong character, brave, wouldn't let herself be fooled by anyone and would literally kick your ass if she feels like it. I adore her.
Sorin
Sorin is such a great character. Respectful, honorable, kind and loyal, would do anything for the ones he loves, but also cares for his the good of his people.
The villain
I hated him from the beginning and that won't change. This man is evil incarnate, doesn't care about anyone, has no scruples and would do anything to anyone to take revenge on the ones who wronged him. In a way, I admire his dedication, but he's so far gone ... truly a villain.

Romance
The relationship between the main characters has a slow build and I really liked that. We are witnessing how enemies turn to lovers and it's my favorite trope in the world.
When another man makes an appearance and twists everything around I got so pissed. We have a love triangle moment, which is so frustrating and not because of her but because ... you'll get it when you read it.

Conclusion
The last few pages made me want to scream and throw something. Things take an ugly twist and we're left to suffer. I had angry tears in my eyes and I wanted to throw that someone off a cliff. I hope Shaye does it in my place.

This is definitely one of the books that deserve more hype. If you're looking for a short high-fantasy read, with a great cast of character, dark vibes and a drop of romance, this may be just the perfect one for you ❤️️

I loved J.M Wallace's debut novel, A Legacy of Darkness! The characters, the action, the quest, the enemies-to-lovers romance, the friendships - it's everything I love in a romantasy and more. The world-building and magic are fascinating, well-developed, and immersive. Asterion is described in a way that pulls you right into the story and into Shaye and Sorin's worlds. They come from very different places, and each setting, as well as the places they go to on their quest, is vividly painted. The magic, monsters, other unique fantasy elements are also intriguing and layered.

Written from a dual point of view, the story delves into the thoughts, feelings, and motivations of both Shaye and Sorin. It's interesting to see the story from both of their perspectives. Shaye and Sorin are both so compelling, and I loved their journeys - both physical and emotional. Shaye is such a richly developed protagonist, and I was drawn to her story from the very first page. The last of a powerful family of Druids, Shaye is the key to defeating the evil that is destroying their land and killing their people. She is fierce, tough, cunning, and brave, but she is also vulnerable, sympathetic, and sensitive. There are so many layers to her character, which I loved. Throughout the book, Shaye faces so many obstacles, and her journey is not easy.

Now, let's talk about my new book boyfriend Sorin. I think I love him! Sorin is also intricately developed and layered, and his arc is as compelling as Shaye's. He's determined, brave, and strong, and he has some amazing friendships. A newly crowned king, Sorin has a lot on his plate. Fixing the wrongs of his father, defeating the evil that has reappeared, and trying to bring balance to his kingdom are just some of his obstacles. He is far from perfect, but (I hope) he is sincere in his actions.

The secondary characters are also well-developed, and their stories are equally intriguing. I particularly love the found family aspect of the story. A unique group goes with Shaye and Sorin on their quest, and their dynamic is fantastic. The banter, the comradery, the way they all slowly begin to trust each other and work as a unit - this group forms a bond that none of them expected, and it's one of my favorite parts of the story. Of course, one of my other favorite aspect of the story (no surprise here) is the romance!

Enemies-to-lovers romances are one of my favorites, and the budding relationship between Shaye and Sorfin is everything! It's the kind of slow-building, "will they or won't they" kind of love story that I adore. Sorfin is the son of the man who killed her family, so Shaye doesn't trust him at all. Of course, Shaye is slow to trust everyone, and rightly so. There are some major betrayals in her life and in the story that prove she is right to be so discerning when it comes to giving her trust. I loved seeing Soring slowly break down Shaye's walls, and their slow-building relationship is wonderful. I'm totally rooting for Sorin and Shaye to be endgame! They have great chemistry, and I think Sorin deeply cares for Shaye. But after that ending, who knows what will happen!!

There is never a dull moment in the story, and with some surprising revelations, morally grey characters, lies, secrets, and betrayal, and antagonists trying to thwart them every step of the way, Shaye and Soring are in constant danger. They must learn how to work with and trust each other, which proves difficult, especially for Shaye. They go on such an epic quest, and it is suspenseful, deadly, and intense, and I loved it. The pacing is also really well done, and the intensity and suspense build to an unbelievable ending that left me speechless. There's so much to want to say about the plot and the characters, and the love stories (yes, stories! There's a budding romance between secondary characters that is so cute!!), but I don't want to give too much away. All I can say is be prepared to feel all of the feels because this story will take you on a dark, twisted, and fantastic adventure.

Action, romance, a found family, an epic journey, and unique magic and monsters, A Legacy of Darkness is a gripping and immersive debut novel. And that ending! Oh my word!! After that cliffhanger, I need to read the next book ASAP!!! I highly recommend the book to readers who enjoy fantasy or romantasy, and I'm so thankful to the author for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

A legacy of Darkness will get you hooked from page 1, once I started this book I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. If you’re a fan of high fantasy books this needs to be your next read. It’s a dual POV book about a new king who must go on a quest to right the wrongs his father made, while battling an evil that has resurfaced before it’s too late for his people, and a young woman who is the last of the powerful magic line of Druids and the last hope for both the king and the entire kingdom. She must learn to use her powers while struggling with a past that refuses to stay in the past, and developing feelings for someone who might just be different from what she expected. The characters are lovable and totally badass. Sorin is my newest book boyfriend, and the antagonist might just have the power to pull me in with his darkness ! I can’t wait to read book two and see what happens next !!!! Thank you so much to J.M Wallace for letting me read an arc of this amazing book, I absolutely loved it !

Can I just say this book was a BEAUTIFUL read? THIS is the escape you need right now if you enjoy fantasy. Trust me on this. Take a break from the news, put down your social medias, and go into a world where the creatures are as delightful as they are intriguing.

Also, want a splash of romance? Check!
Want a quest? Check!
Want found family? Check!
Want a fast-paced, high-stakes story? Check!

All that being said, if you’re a heavy character reader like me then you’ll need to exercise some patience because SO MUCH happens in this first book that there isn’t a lot of extra time to get super close inside the character’s heads and I’m sorry to say, but at the point that I am writing this, the next book is not out yet! So save a little patience and know you’ll need to buy the whole series to cozy up and become close friends with the characters.

Quick overview without spoilers.
A past coup splits those with magic apart from those without. But the king has died and a new king arises, a king who didn’t agree with the violence of the coup. Can he bring balance?
In the meantime, danger lurks on the edges of the kingdom as deadly creatures draw closer and the only way to protect everyone? A missing relic and a druid girl who doesn’t trust the king.
Will they be able to work together?
And will the quest be worth it?

You’ll just have to read to find out. Why are you still reading this review? Go grab A Legacy of Darkness and settle in a comfy spot, because you won’t want to put this down until you get to the end.

I honestly only finished this book because of how short it is. As much as I wanted to enjoy this, I could not get into it. There are so many details for things that don’t matter and not enough details for things that advance the plot/bring you into the story. The plot has so much potential, but the journey through it is so vague. I felt nothing.

This is a breathtakingly beautiful new adult, high fantasy debut novel from the amazing J.M. Wallace.

I am forever in awe of authors and the worlds they imagine, create and bring to life for us.
This book is no expectation!
We are introduced to a delicious array of characters, including a Druid, a King, Knights, witches and evil dark entities that will make your nightmares as real as Shaye’s!
Stunning, intricate and beautifully detailed world building.
And a story that captures you from the beginning and, for me, hasn’t let go yet!
I basically want, no NEED book 2 NOW! Lol

Told from a 2 person POV ~
Shaye - strong, courageous and curvy. A real powerhouse of a woman. You’ll adore her as much as I do.
And King Sorin, handsome, kind, loyal and your new book boyfriend! It’s true, believe me lol

Shaye must overcome the pain of her past in order to rediscover the magic from within.
Sorin must make amends for the wrongs done by his father and together, with their unlikely group of allies, they must save the people of Asterion.
But can Shaye trust the man she views as her enemy, the people around her and even her own mind??? There is only one way to find out!

Thank you so much, J.M. Wallace for the stunning book & for allowing me an ARC copy in return for an honest review 🥰

Things I liked:
-The explanation of the magic system in the beginning. It was super easy to keep track of the different Magi in my mind that way.
-The overall story line, a woman who is trying to just live her life in a world that was turned upside down and then gets to go on a quest to make some things right.
-I loved the romance. It's so sweet to watch it build.
-The last couple of chapters where things get totally turned on their head!

What I didn't like:
-Side characters weren't used to the best of their ability. Something happens to one and I didn't actually care that much. I wanted more comradery and dialogue from them. We start to see it a bit in the end but not enough throughout the entire book.
-I knew who the bad guy was going to be halfway through. I wish something would have been said/done before so that I wouldn't have guess so easily.
-Need more descriptions of what characters (besides MC's) looked like besides just their physical build.
-More emphasis on the fact that the female MC is the old king's niece. She would have been pretty important.

Overall it's a decent story, I'm actually WAY more excited for book 2 due to the sneak peak at the end! I can't wait to see how Shaye and Sorin come out in it. But PLEASE let us get some more development from the side characters!

A Legacy of Darkness J.M Wallace

J.M Wallace is soon to be an indie author, publishing her first book A Legacy of Darkness, book one of the Legacy of Darkness trilogy series.

Wow! What an epic start to the series.

King Sorin, the newly appointed King, must take a stand and find out what is causing magical beasts entering Asterion. A place where magic has been banned for 12 years.

Shaye, a sassy, druid girl sees first hand the dark magic that starts to surround them.

King Sorin hunts down Shaye and begs her to come and join the fight. Shaye reluctantly goes, as King Sorin is the son of the man who killed her whole family.

Paired together, they go back to the one place where Shaye never wanted to return. The place where her whole family was slaughtered.

A possible love triangle/ enemies to lovers trope, dark and light magic, dark evil creatures, and the epic battle scenes. What more could you want in a fantasy book?

I absolutely loved reading A Legacy of Darkness, and I honestly can't wait to read the next book in the series. I highly urge if you like the sound of this book go and preorder the book today. You won't be disappointed.

Book is out on the 10th October 2021

Thank you ever so much J.M Wallace for granting me the opportunity to read an ARC of your delightful fantasy book. Bring on book two.

Wow! Where to begin? A Legacy of Darkness is everything I wanted in a fantasy. It has all the whimsy and wonder of high-fantasy while managing to be an accessible, easy read. It leans more on plot, character, and pace than heavy world building, complex magic systems, or politics and kept me turning the pages cover to cover. It’s light on violence and romance so should be appropriate for broad audiences. This book will delight seasoned fantasy readers and is a perfect introduction that will hook new fantasy readers.

Now for the details:

The World:
Asterion is a lush fantasy world with unique monsters, playful magic, and dark history. I was gripped by the first chapter. Although the world building is light, the political events included are deeply relevant and personal to the characters, adding to the realness of the setting.

The Characters:
Unlike other high-fantasy, A Legacy of Darkness focuses on a small intimate and entwined cast. This does make it less complex than other fantasy stories, but offers the benefit of a faster-paced narrative and more focused character building. The main cast is delightful

A Legacy Darkness is told through a dual POV between Shaye, the last of the Druid line, whose family was brutally murdered in a coup orchestrated by a vengeful king, and the late vengeful king’s son, King Sorin. Their paths cross when Sorin is tasked to find the last of Druid, the only one who possesses the magic capable of ending a blight that is poisoning the land.

I liked both Shaye and Sorin. They make for very level-headed protagonists who read as good and respectful people, but they don’t shy away from good banter and sass. The banter of the main cast, Shaye, Sorin, and their travelling companions, is light and delightful.

The Ending:
It’s so good I couldn’t possibly spoil it. You’ll just have to read it yourself. I genuinely was not expecting the twists that came and the final chapter left me shivering. Book two can’t come soon enough!

GREAT read from a very promising new author! If you want to get lost in a world of adventure, sorcery and magical creatures then this is a must read! This book took me on a journey to mysterious places that I could see and feel in my mind. The characters felt like friends (and a few enemies) and I kept turning the pages to see where they would take me next. I loved that the end of this book left me wanting to continue on this epic adventure! While this could be read as a stand alone by some people, I'm not one. The ending left me needing to read more and see what happens next! Incredible book from this new author and I see more great work coming from the pen of J.M. Wallace!

Holy moly this was a truly excellent read! I enjoyed every second of it and was immersed in the world from page 1. Each character was so wonderfully developed and dynamic, even the minor characters, and I loved each of them in their own way. The world was richly built, even without long world-building paragraphs - I enjoyed how it all unfolded more and more as the story goes on. The twists and turns at the end kept me hooked and I was desperate to read more and was devastated when I ran out of pages to read!

AND WHEN I TELL YOU MY JAW DROPPED AT THAT ENDING!!!

I recieved a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book!

The plot kept me on my toes from start to finish and I was so disappointed when the book ended, I cannot wait for book two!

The TWO main characters ( because this book is written in dual POV) are brilliant! I love that the female lead is strong and independent, and that the male lead isn’t just a ‘hero’ both characters are much deeper and more complex!

The magic system is great, and woven into the story beautifully.

The creatures- even though they exist is folklore are uncommon and exciting as I hadn’t even heard of some of them before.

This book is a breath of fresh air and hits all the right spots! I can’t recommend it enough!

If you like NA fantasy with magic, royalty , plot twists and betrayal, this book is for you! This book is a great built up for the next book in the series. I'm excited to see the character development and the ending was so good! OMG, that cliffhanger. I liked everything about the magic!!

The world building and introduction to all the characters was not overwhelming as it can be in books. And you can not not like the badass MC.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars!

I was given this book by the lovely author in exchange for an honest review, and I just wanted to start by saying I really did love it and can’t wait to dive into the next one!!

The reason behind the 3 stars, as much as I loved it overall and the characters, there were some pacing issues for me that gave me a hard time fully submerging into the story and I found myself wanting just a bit more from the world building. I also had some “issues” (and I hate to call them that because it’s not really an issue since everyone has their own writing style!) with the prose at times? I just struggled to fully understand what was happening or being said at times, or felt like details being mentioned in places were pulling me out of the action of the story. >.<

I also found the twist pretty predictable, but I’m always guessing twists right at the beginning of books, so if you’ve been following my reviews for a while, that shouldn’t be a surprise ;)

THAT ASIDE, I really did love the story, and I can’t wait to see where the journey continues for everyone and how Sorin and Shaye will proceed moving forward to fight the darkness. I especially loved the characters! Sorin was DEFINITELY my favorite. I have such a soft spot for sweet boi types that have history people can’t see past, as with what his father did. I also really enjoyed Bron and Mavka, I mean who doesn’t love a cutesty little forest girl?! She sort of reminded me of Rapunzel with her preciousness and I adored it.

If you like fantasy with a taste of spice, looming darkness, great characters, and the promise of more adventure, I definitely encourage you to check this one out!

I always enjoy a good Heroes Quest and "A Legacy of Darkness" did not disappoint! The characters were described in a way that made you feel like you were facing this dangerous fantasy world with your own merry band of misfit friends. The author encapsulates with vivid sensory a world full of fantastical beasts, magic and sorcery that keeps you wanting more. I throughly enjoyed the ease and flow of this book, making the world, characters and plot easy to read and understand. Cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in the series!

Such an amazing novel for a debut author. I loved the pacing of the story and how there was action throughout rather than at the end of the novel. The twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat and the cliffhanger at the end made me want to immediately jump into the next book. Her past mixing in with her present was a brilliant idea and made Shaye's level of anxiety go to a point where she had no idea who to trust. I thought it was interesting how as the novel went along, it changed from happy go lucky to completely dark. I really want to know what Shaye is going to do next.

Ok hear me out. This book is very interesting. I'm intrigued with the storyline. But....I'm sensing a love triangle with a foul play. I don't like love triangle.

What I like:
1. The world building. Lots of interesting creatures and unexpected interaction.
2. I love how normal and natural the character's interactions are.
3. The plot is well paced.

What I dislike:
1. The love triangle.

Still, it's a good book to read.

From What You Believe to Madness

The central character is young King Soren and his belief in what's right for his kingdom. With his friends' support, the plot proceeds. We meet Shaye as a young girl, and then as an independent women with fixed ideas, much coming from her childhood trauma. As you read, you know the villain is going to make an evil plot explode, and you will catch the clues as to his identity. The second book is definitely going to darkness!

I was a beta reader for this series, but I also just binge read the series for my own enjoyment. And when I say binge read, I mean no chores were done, no meals were cooked, time stopped for me to read this book.

I’m not normally a fantasy reader. It’s not that I don’t read fantasy, I just don’t always enjoy them. However, I couldn’t let this series go.
I loved it all!

It was a little slow for me to start (so was acotar) but I got hooked by the end! The last third I think was exceptional- smart writing and piecing together the plot’s big picture; flowed much better. I like that the story is just as much the MMC’s story as it is the FMCs. And gave the twisted ending I was hoping for.

Amazing Book! Strong Female lead character giving off Anastasia vibes in the beginning with a fast turnaround. No more helpless princesses, Shaye was here to slay. Small romance in the mix but not giving main objective. Good story line and make you want to pick up the next before getting to the end. No Spice.
