Pyrate Queen

Rate this book
This September, embark on a tale of love, loss, life, death and bloody revenge! Meet Monday Ryan, a pyrate with a bad reputation and a price on her head. To be a pyrate is to live a short and merry life and to live it free. It ends for most with a length of rope and a four-foot drop.

After a series of successful attacks, Monday Ryan, her husband, and her crew of bandits are targeted and pursued relentlessly by the British Royal Navy. When a violent trap leads to their capture, Monday and crew are fitted for the gallows — until the Royal Navy learns that Monday’s pregnant. Civility prevents the hanging of a pregnant woman, and Monday is spared the noose, but her crew and husband are not. Set adrift on a small raft and left to her fate on the open sea, Monday vows that the life growing inside her will be born into a world where its father’s death has been avenged. She will find and kill every last soul responsible for her husband’s death, and her baby will enter into this world free of vengeance, free of bloodshed, and free of a future drenched in violence.

This was a really weird book. I liked the initial first issue but I swear this book me lost me 5 seperate times while I read through the very short 4 issues. The story is a semi-interesting one though. A pregnant woman pirate is captured by the British along with her husband and crew. She is freed by the soldiers since she is pregnant and begs they spare her husband. The british agree but only if she sleeps with the captain. She agrees to do so, telling her husband of what she will do to save his life. But when she wakes up the next morning, she finds her husband hung after the captain says she “wasn’t good enough”. She now feels guilty for giving her husband the thought of her being fucked by the enemy before he died. Fucking yikes that’s dark. So yeah we have a feminist revenge story written by a white guy. Mileage will vary on enjoyment.

For some reason Milligan likes to do this thing where he puts a cliffhanger at the end of an issue, and then completely contradicts that cliffhanger in the next issue. It’s such a strange choice and makes the book read like a nightmare. The book also changes it tunes a bunch, and the final issue reads like something a schizophrenic would write. I didn’t really like the ending either. The best part about this was again the backups, which are awesome.

Backups (rated out orf 5)

1. Mined Games - 5
2. Spear - 4
3. Numb - 3 1/2
4. Andune’s Story - 5

I’m running out of Bad Idea books to read and that’s not such a bad thing but this one was the best since ENIAC. Decent pirate story told in a way only Peter Milligan could. Adam Pollina gives us a different look from his other works for the publisher, I have found him to be completely unrecognizable from one series to the next and this is where I liked him most.

Reviewing the whole 4 issue arc... Excellent!! Fantastic story, narrative, characterization by Milligan with top notch art and quality production from Bad Idea Comics. While on the surface a revenge tale, there is layered complexity, an endearing protaginist, adventure with dark scenes and action that find a satisfying conclusion and redemption. The inclusion of a short mini story at the end of each issue was a plus.

Buen dibujo, un guion chulo y una prota de armas tomar. Aún siendo una historia de piratas, las aventuras se hacen a un lado para traer una trama de obsesión y venganza.
