This is a story of my life and the story of a journey. A journey that led me to live in eight countries on three continents, including a refugee camp in Central America, a country in civil war, and another battling Maoist and Marxist insurgencies and hyperinflation. It is a journey that began in failure but developed into a rewarding 40-year career in international public health, working in poor countries around the world and combating HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, while trying to empower women. It is also the story of my love affair with a woman I met in college, how our two paths joined 39 years ago, and how we raised a family together. My story begins in colonial Virginia, where my oldest known ancestors lived, continues to Illinois where I was born, and on to California where I was raised. This story chronicles my life, and also provides historical context to the various chapters of my life. It also includes reflections on my career in public health, on politics, and on my faith journey.
I loved the personal stories of family adjusting to life in various countries. I respect your walk of faith. I'm glad to call you friend irregardless of differing political views. I agree that friendships are a treasure and wish we kept in better touch.
