As the well-tipped tour guide at a model town within a nuclear test site in 1950s Nevada, Darren Murphy has a job to die for.
His work is easy and relaxed, much like himself, drawing envy from his wide circle of friends.
But one fateful day after one particularly late night in the burgeoning city of Las Vegas, Darren makes a huge mistake.
The mother of all accidents
"I'll try my best to get us all out of here before the next bomb goes off..." Murphy often jokes to his rapt tour groups.
Only this time, due to a slip-up no one could have foreseen, his best might not be enough.
And when the dust settles after a remarkably powerful nearby detonation, the man looking back at Darren Murphy in the model house's mirror might not be the one who stood there before the blast...

I love these Sizzlers - the short story format is fun and doesn't require a big investment of time. Character and plot development is darn good for something this short. I'm glad Craig is taking the time to write on these ideas that maybe aren't "big" enough for a whole book but too good to not write something about. I also think the presentation of the dialog of a somewhat simple American lad was well done, especially coming from a Scottish gentleman author. ;-)
I suppose the idea I liked in this story was that if how an individual might use power - this was set in the context of a nuclear explosion and dealing literally with the fall out
Craig Falconer turns out stories at a frenzied pace; his intelligence shows in his books about near future sci-fi and the very creative shorter stories like this one. Read his books, read them all, I haven’t regretted a single one yet!
Short and sweet these sizzlers are, a few of the moral quandries I have come to accept but they always add to the story and our envolment so that good.
I said on craigs Face book site, I like long stories to get really stuck into, not short stories, but I read this while waiting for a service and MOT, fantastic read, clever story. Reg
