A witch with a side hustle. Star needs another paying gig while she finishes up witch training. Why not at a funeral home? It fits her goth image, and the funeral director is sort of hot...even if he does wear a suit and tie. The job seems perfect, until Star discovers one of their accidental death clients didn’t die accidentally. Before she knows it, she’s neck-deep in paranormal intrigue and her completely human, way-too-nice-for-his-own-good boss is right there with her. And that's just the beginning! Star and Ben work through several intriguing paranormal mysteries in this collection, including: Night Shift Witch, Star of the Party, Tickle the Dragon's Tail, and Twinkles Takes a Holiday.
USA Today bestselling author Cate Lawley writes humorous, action-filled mysteries that frequently contain paranormal elements.
When Cate's not tapping away at her keyboard or in deep contemplation of her next fanciful writing project, she's sweeping up hairy dust bunnies and watching British mysteries.
Cate is from Austin, Texas (where many of her stories take place), but has recently migrated north to Boise, Idaho, where soup season (her favorite time of year) lasts more than two weeks.
She's worked as an attorney, a dog trainer, and in various other positions, but writer is the hands-down winner. She's thankful readers keep reading, so she can keep writing!

Witches didn't have an issue with speaking ill of the dead. I heard all sorts of nasty things about the deceased. Not usually on the day they were murdered, but it wasn't particularly surprising.
I discovered Cate Lawley entirely by chance, perusing the options Kobo had for me in the Fantasy section. I've been trying to read more from lesser-known authors lately, and that can of course be a hit and miss endeavour. Death Retires was the first book I read from Lawley, and oh what a hit it was. Fun, amusing, easy to read and a great story with characters I fell in love with on every page. I was immediately won over to Lawley and started picking up more of her books to read whenever I needed a fun pick-me-up. That day came, and after DNFing a fairly lengthy book halfway through, I needed a book that I knew I was going to love from start to finish.
Night Shift Witch did not disappoint. I admit Death Retires grabbed me just that little bit more, on an entirely subjective level, but this book is a brilliant example of the kind of fun and amusing adventure I have come to expect from this author. I enjoyed the mysteries and the twists and turns here and there, but most of all I just love the banter between characters. I like that there's no attempt to even verge on a love triangle, when the opportunity was there, because the world does not need more love triangles. I like that there's no reliance on relationship drama. I like that one of the suspects in one of the stories is a
There's a moment where Star uses a healing potion that looks like a temporary tattoo by licking it and sticking it onto her hand. And that is exactly the kind of adorable fun that I needed and loved about this book.
And as with the Death Retires universe, I love the world-building. It's never done through an over-abundance of exposition, or boring infodumps. It just is and you get more of a feel for it as the story goes along. I love the weaving together of different mythologies and creatures, I love the basis for the magical system.
I really just love the stories Lawley creates, and I'm excited to check out Vegan Vamp next. (And boy am I really excited for the next Death Retires book.)
No, it's not a perfect book. There are typos here and there, though nothing too egregious. It can be a little confusing sometimes as to who is talking, because the author seemingly prefers not to use 'said' or any variation thereupon. But for what they are, they're certainly more than good enough - and their flaws by no means outshine their brilliant content.
If you want a book that's just fun, with a flair for paranormal mystery and humour, you should read this book. And anything Lawley has written.
I initially thought this book would be fun, light reading but the story kept getting weighed down with far too many long explanations of the mechanics and rules of of the different types of non-humans, etc. It became too much of a chore to get through it all. Also, some of the "creatures" were just too goofy to believe. I just couldn't get finish this book.
I really liked Star when I met her in the Vegan Vamp series (one of my favorites). In the Night Shift Witch series, Cate Lawley shows us how Star meets her true love, grows into her power as a witch and starts working at a funeral home and with the Society. I loved having the books together in an omnibus version. Start the next adventure as soon as the previous adventure wraps up. Light hearted cozy mysteries. Such fun!
I read this complete series without getting at all bored. I'd start the next story as soon as I'd finished the previous one as I wanted to see what the next adventure was. The characters were endearing (Star & Ben) and colourful, especially some of the magical characters. The storyline moved at a good pace. Another favourite cosy mystery author to add to my list.
Paranormal crime investigation and romance. Witch trainee Star gets a job at a funeral home and meets her future husband. The two of them, along with her ex-boyfriend Alex, solve crimes in the paranormal community of Austin. There are four stories, featuring golems, vampires, dragons, and a cat. Typos: "A small muscle ticked...." Clocks tick, muscles tic. Comma used for period or semicolon. "Waiver" for "waver."
This is a four book series about Star, a made witch, her part-time job at a funeral home, her witch mentor Camille, her ex - boyfriend Alex and new boyfriend Ben, and their joining together in solving paranormal murders among other weird happenings. Definitely a most enjoyable and light-hearted series.
I only read the first book in this series because I found the book ridiculous. She’s a witch that doesn’t practice her witchcraft so is incompetent. The book also is so short that the characters were not developed in anyway. The murder was never explained on how he was killed. To many loose ends. So i’m not reading the rest of the books in the series.
There are four mysteries included and each one is nicely done. They don't take very long to read, but don't lack in twitchy business. Star is a great character!
It's a fun light read but I couldn't not figure out the timeline between books. And "my boyfriend is the best" was said so many times, it was annoying. But I liked the idea of the story just not so much the execution.
Love the insecurity of the main character and the sureness of her boyfriend. very decent plots with a mix of both humor and sarcasm in most chapters. Really enjoyable read. Hoping more will be written in the future!
I liked the Characters, but each book seemed to continue with parts of storyline I hadn’t read. It’s a fun story and I enjoyed it a lot, plenty of good witchy fun and mystery. Just a bit missing 😉
These books made me laugh and I mean the writing is hilarious. The author must have a great imagination to think up these characters. The stories are such fun but believable.
I liked this series because it was fun to read and not complicated with tons of characters. I needed a little something to occupy my time and this was perfect.
Night Shift Witch: 3 Stars-No!!! Only 2% into the book (lots of pages taken up with TOC) and already a typo (tie instead of time) and a word left out (“Sometimes the advantages being a witch…” need ‘of’ before ‘being’). Well, we were going good without proofreading errors, then 18% through “…ten years; I knew more about how the paranormal crowd.” Maybe the ‘how’ wasn’t supposed to be there, or some words were left out. This is the last proofreading example I will mention. There were a couple more proofreading problems, nothing serious. Continuity seemed good.
The story itself was a fun, light read. I enjoyed the interactions between Star, Alex, and Ben. The three main characters were pretty well fleshed out. It was a simple mystery, but still good enough to keep me engrossed. The three stars are despite the proofreading problems.
Star of the Party: 3 stars-Continuity issue: “…I scanned first the bathroom, then my probable list of suspects: Margery, Samantha, and Bernard.” Think Bernard should be Grayson as Grayson was the one in the bathroom with them, Bernard was in the kitchen.
Cute enough mystery, nothing that engaged me or made me not want to put it down to do other things, but good enough for three stars. A few minor errors another proofreading would have caught, not enough to pull me from the story.
Tickle the Dragon’s Tail: 3 stars-An occasional word left out, not serious enough to pull me out of the story (i.e. “It didn’t help that were both wrapped up in our own thoughts…”). The story was short, but good though the ending felt rushed; I mean, we really didn’t know for sure about Alistair. I liked Marge (who doesn’t like a big dragon).
Twinkles Takes a Holiday: 4 stars-I felt this was the best story of the bunch. Lots of action, emotion, fun; Twinkles is a hoot.
