Titan Online is in chaos. Villains have always thrived on chaos.
With Leviathan dead, Karna thought he could finally go back to enjoying the game he loves. But his actions have created ripples far wider than he expected. Titan City is vulnerable, and War Town is full of those willing to take advantage.
One more so than others.
Anastasia, the hidden Queen of War Town, is hatching a plan – a plan which Karna finds himself at the centre of. With a new team of powerful NPCs and an increasingly abrasive robotic assistant, Karna must decide what, and who, he is willing to fight for.
Steven is a fighter-turned-writer who resides in the Boston area. A former sports and entertainment writer, he now focuses exclusively on his true passion: epic action fantasy and sci-fi. He wishes all disputes were still settled with a friendly game of hand-to-hand combat, is a fan of awesome things, and tries to write books he’d want to read.
This series is fun superhero LitRPG. I think the two genres are better companions than LitRPG and fantasy.
In terms of story this was a direct continuation of the first book. Despot might have dealt with the most powerful in game Hero in the last book but now he has to content with the most powerful Villain player!
It was OK. All the same strength and weaknesses as the first book. Not a top book but pretty readable and I’ll pick up the third instalment whenever it arrives.
Rating: 3.5 stars
Audio Note: Adam Sims did a decent job with the audio.
This must be one of the most exhilarating books I have read in the LitRPG genre to date, it is jam packed with action from start to finish, full of both heroes and villains and a massive battle which leaves the reader breathless. Despot had taken Leviathan, Meteora and the Gallant Guild out of the game and these were all from the heroic side of the game from Titan City, thinking he would rid the game of tyrants yet all he had done was cause a great imbalance in the game as now he had left a door wide open for the queen of War Town, the great immortal villain known as Anastasia. She who acted as judge, jury and executioner and she had been acting from the shadows for years. She who though never pulling the trigger herself, gave the orders and she was the one he had unleashed on everyone in game. Many feared her and more owed her favours which she could call in whenever she needed. Despot had managed to catch her attention and she was luring him into her web wanting to make use of his ability to control NPC's but Despot was never one to work well with others let alone for them. Furthermore he was all about the story and being free to make ones own story in the game whilst she was out to win the game and since this could not be won maybe she was out to end it for everyone. Despot was damned if he would allow that to happen. So with his sphere in tow and his allies from both sides of the bridge Despot of the Dam set out to spark off the biggest war in the game ever, one in which the villains were meant to triumph over the heroes and for once be acknowledged for what they were able to do. Anastasia thought she was pulling the strings but Despot was his usual cunning and devious self and had plots and sub-plots working towards the end he aimed to see. I just could not put this riveting book down and love the originality of the players characters both NPC's and humans as well as the loyalty of B5, the Ythilian droid, Starshot and Blackstrike, the villains who aided despot as well as all his sphere who worked so hard to see their aim achieved even at the sad cost to their own lives, and I hated the kimura twins who were so very creepy! And I really look forward to reading more into life in Titan Online.
I finished my first readthrough of Immortal a few hours ago and have been trying to figure out the right words to describe it since.
Before we go any further, let me just say that if your question is 'should I read this book?', the answer is yes. It's well written, the characters are a lot of fun, the plot is engaging, and it sets up a quality hook for book 3. Immortal is most certainly worth your time.
But unfortunately, it falls into the unfortunate position of having to be compared to Mastermind. I might be biased, but I adored Mastermind. It was one of my favorite books that I read last year. Compared to those lofty standards, Immortal just doesn't really hold up, and it took me a while to figure out why.
The thing about Mastermind was that, beyond the core plot and the main character's vendetta, it was a lot of *fun*. We got to see life through the eyes of a character on their way up in this zany game. He got into a fight with a sewer lizard. He robbed a bank. We got see how everything worked. There were just a whole bunch of scenes of Despot playing the game. And there's nothing really in Immortal except the opening scene that really has that same feel.
I guess what I'm trying to say was that in Mastermind, it felt like Despot was having fun, and so I had fun reading along with it. In Immortal, Despot has very little fun to speak of. It's all moral quandaries, interactions with powers beyond measure, and labyrinthine planning. Considering that one of the major themes in Immortal is 'Why is Despot still playing?', I'm guessing it was intentional, but it feels like the book suffered from it.
There are a few other niggling complaints, mostly focused on the strong supporting cast feeling like they're barely in the book for most of it, but they're all minor flaws. All in all, if you enjoyed Mastermind, you'll enjoy Immortal. I just hope that Book 3 has a bit more of that spark in it.
Titan Online series is probably my 2nd favorite superhero series behind Superpowered by Drew Hayes. Superpowered series for anyone who is interested is to this day the best audiobook series I have probably ever listened to. This is from someone that doesn't get into audiobooks unless it captivates me.
Onto Immortal book 2 of Titan Online. Mastermind which is book 1 is phenomenal and I mean that. I have written to the author a few times for both Mastermind and Immortal and I am thankful to Steven for taking my constructive criticism. The plot of this book is on one hand predictable and on the other hand still very fulfilling in the end. You know the path of Despot from the very beginning and his path is very predictable because we see it in stories and movies all the time... until we get to the end.
I don't want to provide a lot of spoilers. I think 2 of his support characters were very unremarkable and really didn't connect to the reader at all. You will know these at once by the lack of emotion offered. The downhill slide of Despot is what I mentioned as predictable. The end though if following the path of Mastermind is that Mr Kelliher is very good at cliffhangers and I hate him for it. The combo of ALL the heroes and villains towards the end is great and the return of one spectacular.
I would grade this a 4-4.5/5. It definitely is not as good as Mastermind which i would rate a 5 for just pure enjoyment all the way through. This one was a little bit of a slog to get through, but the end makes me want to read book 3. This is one of the better LitRpgs stories out there from a guy that has read a fair few of this addicting niche genre.
Recommendation : Continue the path of Despot with Immortal and wait for book 3. This is not a bad book. There are parts and characters that infuriate me, but Steven also puts a lot of attention into new characters which some add more personality than others.
I enjoyed Mastermind, the first book in the Titan Online series, quite a bit but Immortal is quite a bit better. Mastermind was a simple revenge book but Immortal is more complex and nuanced. The battles are bigger and more detailed but even more important, there's a greater incentive for action. Karma (Despot) isn't just trying to defeat one character who'd gotten too big for his britches, this time around he's keeping the entire VR MMORPG from becoming for just one person's ego gratification. It's a seemingly impossible task because his new counterpart is immortal--and how do you defeat that? This book is quite a step up from the first book and given how this one ends, the third book in the series is going to be a real doozie.
Despot returns in another great book in which he once again must figure out how to deal with a major mover and shaker. Unlike many LitRPGs, he wins some, loses some, and above all, only clever play and deep strategy will save him. Looking forward to the next one!
Plenty of action, heroes and more to keep you wanting more. The characters are just perfect to make you feel a part of of everything that goes on. I can’t wait for the next book.
