A trapped harpy, a demon collecting secrets, and an adventure that weaves them tighter than the bond they share.
The Harpy Trouble follows me like a shadow, but I’ve flown too close to the sun this time. A few thoughtless words while drowning in guilt, and I’m trapped in a deal I didn’t ask for with my rival. I’m weakened every second we spend apart.
I’ve been tricked. He’s ruined my life, but now he needs my help. It’s the opportunity I’ve been waiting for. This demon is soul-deep and I’m ready to carve him out. But his isn’t the worst debt hanging over my head.
The Demon My past haunts me, but a certain fiery harpy chases away the shadows. I’ve wronged a woman I deeply admire, but I can’t save the people being sold to the highest bidder without her. I am a parasite. To survive, I must bond to someone strong, and this bond is like no other I’ve experienced. I want to make this right. I want to devour her secrets.
Keeping Sophia Shirazi was never an option, but now that I’ve had a taste, how can I ever let her go?
**Pair of Fools is Mace’s and Sophia’s story. This is a MF romance that takes place after Three of Hearts with crossover characters from Stalked by the Kraken, but can be read as a standalone story.
Content Warning: This book contains mentions of suicide and past sibling death and depictions of the trafficking of sentient beings, violence, and gore.
I loved Mace from the first book and was eager to see what would come of his bickering relationship with Sophia. Unfortunately, many characterization choices didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me and external conflicts would pop up right when the internal conflicts were getting interesting. Still, it was fine enough until the last 30% of the book when things went off the rails.
It felt underdeveloped all around. If I hadn’t read the first book, I would have had no idea that Sophia is biracial. I don’t think it was mentioned once here. I’m also not sure what her or Mace’s careers are or who pays them—I wanted to know more about their various missions and jobs, especially on Sophia’s end since I didn’t see much evidence that she was as talented and brave as Mace said. She didn’t know basic things…like the fact that she’d been infringing on Mace’s territory, not the other way around. There’s also a lot of ableism—I wasn’t a fan of the Mentally Ill Villain trope or the way suicide was equated with weakness.
It was fun getting to see the characters from Stalked By The Kraken. There are all kinds of interesting set ups for secondary characters so I hope the next books in this world will work better for me.
Character notes: Sophia is an Iranian-white harpy. Mace is a white demon and teleporter.
Content notes: abduction, imprisonment, violence/physical assault, trafficking and rescue mission, immolation from fireball spell (recovers), past death of MMC’s twin sister (he believes it’s due to suicide but , family planning discussion, past bullying, near castration of slimy hookup/minor character, pregnant secondary character, anxiety (secondary character), on page sex, breeding kink, alcohol, gendered insult, reference to harpy who died related to intimate partner violence
It wasn't as wonderful as some of the previous books but still a good read. I loved the characters and their relationship. Don't remember enough to write a proper review so here we go.
Just when I think I've read the best Lillian Lark book yet, she goes and knocks it out of the freaking park again.
This story centers on Sophia, a harpy who just wants to live her own life free of expectations from her family, but who is stuck in a sticky situation with a demon, Mace. Both Sophia and Mace bring their own baggage to the party, and it just makes the angst so *chef's kiss* delightful. The romance is set against a plot to break up a ring of traffickers, and watching the relationship grow as they work to solve the mystery is a delight.
Pick this one up if you like: -- strong female MC -- enemies-to-lovers (but in a cozy way) -- really steamy spice -- lovely angst -- a HEA to swoon for
Having only read Stalked by the Kraken, I came into this book only knowing Rose and Gideon, but I didn't find myself confused or lost by all of the different characters. If anything, knowing that there are stories about some of these pairings definitely makes me want to read more about this world that Lillian has created.
I think one of the strongest things about her books is how seamlessly the paranormal is blended with the modern. Having a PI use their magic to link trackers to an app on their smartphone is genius, and it's only just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to world building. If I had to pick a favorite part, it would definitely be the relationship between the two main characters. The chemistry is there right from the beginning and watching them grow and learn how to love was such a delight.
Can't wait to see what comes next. I'll have to suffice with reading the other books in this world while I wait.
I received an advanced copy, but this is my honest review.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this amazing book.
As with all Lillian Larks book it did not disappoint. I absolutely adore Mace and Sophia and really loved their push and pull. Lillian is amazing at writing tension!! I really enjoyed learning more about Mace as he was a mysterious character in the other ones. I enjoyed Sophias take no shit but take all the risks attitude.
The world building in this is immaculate. With all of her books you can pick it up but I definitely recommend reading Three Of Hearts and Stalked By The Kraken because the characters in those show up in this one with spoilers.
Overall an amazing book but I wasn’t surprised as Lillian is a fantastic writer.
I was fortunate enough to receive this highly anticipated read as an ARC, and all opinions are my own.
Where do I even start?! I am a faithful reader of this series, and I have to say this addition to it has me soaring! In Pair of Fools, the reader follows the events after Three of Hearts where a demon (Mace) calls upon a favor in which he is owed from a harpy (Sophia). Much to Sophia’s distain in helping her competitor, her pride pushes her into a soul bond with Mace that is more than what she had bargained for.
I thought Rose and Gideon from Stalked by the Kraken were my favorite couple in this world, but Sophia and Mace are coming in for that first place position! The chemistry and tension between them was so alluring that it really drew me in. AND THE SPICE. *chefs kiss*
If you’d like to get into a fun paranormal romance read I HIGHLY suggest this book (and Stalked by the Kraken/Three of Hearts because there are some fun scenes with Sophia in them so don’t miss out on it!)
Ooooo MAN! Lillian just gets better and better! I absolutely LOVED Sophia and Mace's story! You can never go wrong writing a story about the consequences of making a deal with a tricky demon, but the banter between these characters was next level and their story elevated the concept for me! I enjoyed every minute of reading Pair of Fools and found myself wishing it didn't have to end! Luckily there is more to come in the series, but I will be very impatiently waiting!!
Sophia has some animosity directed toward Mace, and has considered him an adversary. But now the two have bigger problems to face.
The angst between Sophia and Mace is strong, but the spice is even stronger! The author knows spice and I cannot get enough of her work. The story is brilliant, and I love the push and pull the characters have together.
I loved these characters, but they haven't topped Rose and Gideon from Stalked by the Kraken.
Lillian does it again with creating a wonderful story with a stellar cast.of characters. I absolutely loved Sophia's grit and ferocious personality. And Zane is incorrigible with Sophia. I love that the romance was slow burn, and it was more of a "partners-in-crime to friends to lovers" kind of deal. I love the world building in the story, and I love how well other species are melded together with this world. This is technically a standalone novel, but I would recommend reading Three of Hearts and then Stalked by the Kraken to really get some of the characters pasts as well as the supporting cast. I just absolutely loved it 😍 I received an ARC of this book from the author.
I LOVE this series!!! Sophia and Mace's book does not disappoint! This book brings the heat and because it's Lillian Lark, you can trust that it's kink positive and SPICY. Sophia and Mace's romantic journey feels incredibly authentic and real- these characters are able to grow together over the course of the book and the setup for the next book in the series is *Chef's Kiss*
I recieved an ARC copy of Pair of Fools and am so happy to leave my review!
Oh my goodness! I absolutely loved reading this book of Mace and Sophia! I loved seeing Sophia and Mace falling in love and getting their happy ending. I didn’t want the book to end at all. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!
My introduction to the amazing talent of Lillian Lark was Stalked by the Kraken, so I was already introduced to the fierce harpy Sophia and I was chomping at the bit to finally get her full story. Needless to say I jumped at the chance to ARC read this beauty.
Introduced in Three of Hearts and Stalked by the Kraken, our FMC Sophia is the youngest of the Shirazi triplets and by far the most headstrong. Her wanderlust betrays everything that she’s ever been taught about being a harpy, but she cannot help herself from being reckless.
Enter Mace, a demon who needs a soul bond in order to remain anchored to the mortal plane. In a moment of Sophia’s weakness she becomes indebted to Mace… and you guessed it… all for the low, low price of a single soul bond.
Needless to say, our fierce harpy is now on the hunt for anything that can get her out of this mess. She wants nothing to do with being bonded to a teleporting, world adventuring, cheeky demon like Mace… right?
I really enjoyed the tension with these two characters. Mace never had a doubt in his mind that Sophia hung the moon and stars, and Sophia had a lot of trust to build and a lifetime of personal issues to overcome.
If you haven’t already, I highly suggest reading Three of Hearts and Stalked by the Kraken before this one as there are some spoilers for both in this book.
Love how this story works through Mace’s and Sophia’s insecurities. It’s really good. Plus, the adventure is worth it. They are fighting against an evil worth fighting. Smutty and sweet.
Really enjoyed this book! We get the set up for Sophia and Mace in book 1, in which Sophia’s sister Zeph is mated to Mace’s best friend Asa. The two are instantly pseudo-enemies as Mace has been taking business from Sophia lately - Sophia hates him, Mace finds her interesting and amusing.
You don’t need to read book 1 to hop into this one, but there is world building from book 1. (Also, Stalked by the Kraken takes place before Pair of Fools and Sophia and Mace both cameo in that book; the main couple from SBTK cameo in this book as well.)
Sophia is a harpy who is soul-bound to Mace, a weaker demon who needs to be bound to someone, or he will “fade away”. She becomes bound to him after she inadvertently strikes a deal with him during book 1, and this book opens with her dealing with the negative repercussions of their soul-binding: she’s weak, sick, tired constantly.
The two team up to try and fix the lopsided soul-binding between them and to take down a slavery ring of rare paranormal beings (a plot from multiple books in this world).
I found Mace to be delightful. He’s weaker than Sophia and it irks him due to his past. He doesn’t want to have to protect anyone or for anyone to rely on him because he knows he isn’t strong enough to save them. Sophia is prickly and hell bent on getting away from him. Their back and forth was so fun - and the tough times between them made my heart ache in the best way.
The balance between romance and plot is something Lillian does really well - I didn’t feel that either part was lacking (maybe because this book is 315 pages, compared to book 1’s 191?). Really excited for Amara’s book and more from this world.
If you are ever on Booktok, you’ve likely come across Lillian’s recommendation videos. With her adorable sweater collection and wide breadth of suggestions, she brings joy to us readers with every post. Beyond being the queen of book recs, Lillian is also a phenomenal author with a knack of weaving characters’ stories together to create a world I want to visit more of with every book she writes! Pair of Fools is a prime example of that.
We catch back up with Sophia, the harpy, and Mace, the demon that has caught her up in a begrudging soul bond, in this book and they give you all the angst you could want! Like her sister Zeph, Sophia is struggling with the expectations of being a harpy and what that means for her own independence, interests, and work that she is passionate about. Mace is that quirky demon that hides his tortured past with humor and his enjoyment for ruffling Sophia’s feathers. These two have had some delicious tension since we first met them so it was a joy to finally see them dance closer and closer to finally breaking and giving in to the heat between them.
As usual, Lillian did not sacrifice the spice to give us these dynamic characters and immersive world. Nope. She came in HOT with these two, including Sophia’s milkmaid proclivities. Ahem. The other joy this book brings is reconnecting us with favorite characters such as Zeph and her guys, Gideon and Rose, and of course, Leo (whose book I want next!). All these glimpses make the characters feel authentic and make this world substantive and having me begging for Lillian to bring me as many books as her beautiful brain can produce!
This is my second book to read by Lillian Lark. They are luckily 2 books in the same universe. I really adore the way Lillian writes a book. She created this world of all different preternatural creatures. If you tell me Harpy I'm all in. There is just something about the fierceness of a Harpy that speaks to my soul.
Sophia does not disappoint. She is tough, fierce and determined. She loves her sisters with her whole being and would do anything for any of them. I adore the friendship between Alice and Sophia I wish there would have been more of them together. I liked getting the crossover of the characters from other stories into this world. I am definitely going to have to go back and read the first book. I also want more harpy wings.
Mace is the charming, rakish sort in the start of this story. But his character evolves so much throughout this story. You really get to see who he truly is and all of his insecurities. I want to know more about the in between. He is a devoted friend, and mate. He truly fights for what is right and in a world like this that is huge.
I am so intrigued by this world the idea of the different planes. The different creatures we learn about and see. She hinted at one at the end and all I want is to know more. Lillian builds a world so flawlessly and with such grace that I am invested from the very beginning.
Also on a truly steamy note...two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Anytime there is shredding of clothing or transporting whilst in the midst of the intimate times I am all in. This was very nicely steamed and lava panties were obliterated.
As with the earlier books I have read by Lillian Lark, this book does not disappoint. She creates multi-dimensional characters that do not fall into the normal stereotypes and depictions usually seen. I also really like that she has paranormal creatures that are not standard. Yes, there are the normal wolf shifters, but she also puts in krakens and harpies.
I really like how Sophia struggles with her own wants and what is expected of her within the dynamics of her family and the harpy community. I particularly liked her scenes with her Aunt Fairuza. Her devotion and loyalty to her sisters is clear, as well as the guilt she has for putting one in danger.
I was looking forward to getting to Mace’s story. We had been given glimpses of him in earlier novels. I absolutely adored that fact that he did not fit the normal “alpha” mold that we are so used to seeing in books. His awe of Sophia and her strengths was refreshing. His journey to work through his past was well written and plotted out.
Ms. Lark continues to explore the Harpy universe with this novel, set in the same universe as Stalked by the Kraken and Three of Hearts. We get to see Zeph and her men again, albeit briefly. We get a glimpse at the eldest sister, Amara as well. I am very much looking forward to seeing Amara’s journey. It would be awesome to get a glimpse at Fairuza’s history as well, but that may be too much to ask. There are so many characters within this universe that are so intriguing, and worthy of their own stories. I can’t imagine how the author decides who goes next.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this and I’m so happy I did. This was a perfect cleanser for all the dark romance I’ve been reading.
This is an interconnected story with “Three of Hearts" and “Stalked by the Kraken," but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. I will say reading the other two really helps build the world up more.
I liked Sophia in “Three of Hearts," you could tell she was a take charge, badass! I was intrigued by the clear hints that were dropped that she and Mace would have a story. Sophia is so fierce and while she absolutely thinks she’s a badass she still has doubts about her place in the Harpy community and the world in general. Luckily she inadvertently made a deal with Mace and he will help her see just how fierce she is.
I just want rip Mace from the pages and bring him to the real world. It’s so clear that he’s smitten with Sophia even when he’s not 100% clear that he is. I LOVE how he worships her.
I’m a sucker for a slow-burn that doesn’t feel slow and delivers when the time comes and Lillian delivers! I didn’t need this book to tell me I had a breeding kink but if I ever questioned it, this made it clear.
Definitely excited for Amaras book….and honestly anything Lillian writes.
This was such an enjoyable read and I was completely invested in Sophia and Mace's story. Lilian has created a world that has loads of interesting characters and a plot that is engaging. Things never go to plan when you owe demons favours.
Mace is confident in his job, secure in his ability to glean information to help take down a trafficking ring. However, underneath his buff confident exterior, he thinks he is weak and unworthy of love. He surrounds himself with powerful friends in order to disguise his perceived shortcomings. Sophia is a smart, confident, fierce harpy tired of being bound by the strict rules governing harpy communities and longs for knowledge and adventure.
As these two embark on their quest to take down the traffickers, it's adorable to watch their feelings and trust in one another grow. They compliment each other which brings out their best traits pushing the negative thoughts aside. Also, honourable mention to Mace and his dirty talking self. The sexy times between these two were on point!
This book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone however it is helpful to read the previous book as characters and plot elements do overlap.
I am excited to read the next book in the Harpies of a Feather series.
I love love love this book. I am biased because Lillian always writes gold but this couple is so great.
They have to work together to solve an important case and close proximity does what it does best!
Sophia is so strong and kick ass but learns how to surrender to the right person. I love watching her open up and follow her instincts.
Mace is infatuated right off but reads Sophia so well and knows what to do. He is the perfect soft dom if you will. He has some baggage to work through so its not an easy journey.
I love nothing more than a well written, provoking romance novel and Lillian never fails to deliver <3
I love the power dynamic in Pair of Fools and thoroughly enjoyed not only the adventurous crime-fighting of the main characters but also the way in which their relationship develops and eventually resolves.
The only thing I would have changed was to make the story longer. Lillian creates such interesting and engaging storylines that I'd love nothing more than to delve into them even further.
And if I might make a request if Lillian sees this... I'd love to see a dragon romance with Kalos. I have a soft spot for dragons <3
I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
4 stars!
I got my ARC a few hours ago, picked it up and didn’t put it down until just now when I finished it. Omg, this book did not disappoint!
The long expected story of Mace and Sophia. After the book, Three of Hearts, we know that Mace needed a soul bond, after Asa bonded with Gregory and Zeph, and who better to ask than the fierce harpy who owes him a favour…….
This is their story. Sophia struggles with the bond. And then Mace decides he could use her help, which works in Sophia’s favour, because maybe she can find a way do deal with all her own troubles..?
This is a bit of a slow-burn. In the previous books the spice started pretty early, but in this book, the good scenes didn’t start until nearly halfway in the book, but Lillian delivered! It was steamy, a bit kinky and everything I did not know I needed. Sophia is a strong, independent harpy and Mace is just the right amount of dominant, but can switch over to, not quite submissive, but just what Sophia needs. They match.
Mace was already my favourite in Three of Hearts, but he stole my heart halfway through this book and still holds it at the end of it.
Fans of Lillian’s books, you should read this. Other people, you should read this book! It is a great story, with a HEA. Just what the doctor ordered on a cold day: a blanket, a cup of tea and Pair of Fools.
I’ve been waiting for Sophia and Mace’s book for so long and it didn’t disappoint! Sophia owes a debt to Mace and he claims this in way of a soul bond, which he needs as a demon to keep him tethered to Earth. What follows is enemies-to-lovers and forced proximity while they work together to track down victims of a trafficking ring. I loved their relationship, from their bickering at the beginning to the slow development to lovers. They had such great chemistry and are probably my favourite couple of this world so far. Characters from previous books show up so I’d recommend reading those first, as it’ll help you understand some of what’s happened before and how it ties in.
This book is amazing. The h is fierce and loving and incredible to watch on this journey. The H is everything she needs and didn’t know what she was missing. The story just sucks you in and doesn’t let go. I need more of them. This book cannot be missed. This series just makes my heart happy. Sometimes consequences can change your life
I have loved Lillian Lark’s way of story telling ever since I read Three of Hearts! She has this way of pulling you into the story and making you fall head over heels for the characters. In Pair of Fools, Sophia and Mace were no exception to this. Although it is technically a stand alone I would highly read the other two connected books as it will heighten your experience and attachment to the story in POF.
This book has very quickly made its way onto my comfort books list and I will likely be circling back around to read it again soon!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Wow, this was another great read by Lillian Lark. I thought that not only was the story of Mace and Sophia great with good spice but also there was an interesting plot there that kept me in suspense the whole time.
I read Stalked by the Kraken first but this is a standalone that you could pick up and read without having read previous books.
This kept me reading and I cannot wait to see what Lillian puts out next.
This book is Everything that I was hoping it would be and then some. These characters were troublemakers and truly just the way their relationship evolved was beautiful the world building and being able to feel like you are in that story and a part of their lives is so amazing. Lillian always makes you want to be the characters in her books amazing writing amazing characters this book and the first book three of hearts are truly some of my favorites! Read this book if you want adventure and feel good feelings and spice!
I love how Lillian's characters always have very relatable themes while still capturing the otherworldly aspects expected of fantasy books. Mace and Sophia are both great characters and I really liked the journey they took through their own traumas and hang ups to come together. Can't wait for the next book!
