What could happen to an Illinois farm boy and his wife moving to Central America? The interesting story of an American couple taking early retirement, leaving the corporate life and moving to Nicaragua. The frustrations and joys of being expats in a foreign land needing to learn a new culture and language. The saga begins with selecting a new country using a simple formula. Besides friendly people and a low cost of living, they wanted a country that was different enough to be interesting but not so different to be bizarre.

Leaving behind the accumulations of a lifetime, they moved to Nicaragua, the 2nd poorest country in the Americas only behind Haiti. To their surprise, they discovered a beautiful land populated with gentle people. The ups and downs of the journey is told in such a manner to provide humorous anecdotes, information about a different culture and how they re-invented their lives. The tale is a result of detailed diaries kept from the initial decision then spanning 15 years. They discovered how to live much richer lives with very little.

Not the retirement for everyone but a glimpse into an alternative. Thinking about moving overseas? Read about this couple’s adventure.

I have been traveling to Nicaragua regularly since about the same time the Bushnells moved there. It has been fun reading about their experiences, which have tracked our experiences almost to a tee. So this book is a very accurate account of life as an expat in Nicaragua at the time each diary entry was written although, admittedly, things have changed over the years.

From a literary standpoint, I found the book frustrating in the beginning. It seemed to be an unedited publication of Darrell's personal journals with problems like incomplete sentences. That issue was resolved pretty early in the book, so stick with it if you have this same initial gripe.

Like Darrell, I encourage people to at least visit, if not relocate, to this beautiful country with amazing people. You won't regret it ;). And this is a perfect book to get you prepped for the adventure.
