Book one

Mistakes: Oh boy where there a lot. For such a short book it has a lot of errors. 21 that I found are posted on Goodreads. This story needs more depth. It jumped right into the action.
When did the female MC teach the male MC any kind of self-defense?
How come the computer strapped to the male MC's arm missed such a logical answer in the tunnel?
This book needs heavy editing.

Plot: Giant monsters rampage across the earth. Humans with a rare genetic marker can turn into monsters to fight back.

Characters: They need some kind of background. Also if the female MC is such a high level how come she has such limited powers?

4/10 With heavy editing and a bit of world building and background for the characters this can be an excellent and very fun read.

Level Up, Kaiju! is the latest in a series of LitRPG Kaiju novels. There was Matt Dinniman's horror novel Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon, and then further back was Kaiju Wars Offline, which I remember reading.

in this book Kaiju have shown up, and there really isn't any prelude. They're here, they're killing and while Eric (the MC) is a civilian, he still pays attention to what is happening. That is until the biggest Kaiju gets hurt, the acidic blood of that same Kaiju covering Eric entirely. He even swallows some of it, but he survives.

That's a good enough reason to give him a device that can change a human into a Kaiju. From there he's taken to training, until he's good enough to be tested in the field. There aren't any discussions about the conservation of mass, and I was fine with that.

in between all this is a plot involving a big tech multinational that is providing the stuff Eric needs to turn into a Kaiju, along with a lot of other stuff. There is some history and speculation about where the Kaiju's come from, including a sort of inner Earth called the Lost World.

For me the best part of the novel was when Eric manages to find a tunnel into the Lost World which provides some insights into the technology being used, as well as levelling Eric up quite a bit.

So that's the essence of the plot. This is a LitRPG novel, with regular skill increases. Having said all that, we also have some issues.

First is the editing. At first blush the book is well edited, but it's weird where the intended word is replaced by a different word. Like next instead of neck, that sort of thing. Not sure how that happens, but there you go.

The biggest thing was that I was constantly thinking of aspects of the story that are not mentioned. Like what is happening to the human population? It's mentioned at the very end that cities have been evacuated, but we all know that's not a simple process.

There's also the mandate that Eric not destroy buildings and property while fighting Kaiju, which just seems silly. It also seems like the only people fighting these monsters are four people, plus the evil technology company which is trying to become an empire all on its own. That can't be right, because we soon learn there are way more Kaiju than people thought.

Anyway, I like to take a book on its own merits, but that's where my mind went. I like most of what this author has put out, from Star Commander to the goblin card game (can't remember the name, and it's too late to look it up).

A slightly generous 4/5*

Fantastic

Crazy idea lots of new potential in litrpg I love the kaiju angle a lot and combining it with stats and levels makes I even better.

Likeable relatable character's even if the sparce amount of history of the conflict was touched upon there was enough to give a vague picture of the overall time line the author is going for. Could use more in my opinion especially the destruction wrought over all to give scope of things

Over all can't wait for book 2

About time we had a LitRPG kaiju

Well written, with lots of nods to alot of Kaiju shows. The level up mechanic is interesting and has a lot of potential. Enjoyable and worth the read
