Sweetest Revenge #2

Hateful Regent

Rate this book
Finding out who murdered my sister was supposed to be easy…

The Boys of Ascendance Bay are more complicated than I ever imagined. Between what Jude told me and the creepy notes that I’ve found in my room I’m beginning to wonder if there’s more to my sister’s death than I first thought.

Melody is pushing harder for me to find the evidence we need to take our revenge. Add to that pledging Pi Ep and the Regents taking an interest in me, and my already full plate is starting to overflow.

It doesn’t help that my icy cold heart is trying to beat again for two of the guys we suspect had a hand in our sister’s murder.

I’m too damaged, too lost in my father’s web to fall for them though. If I did it would start a war between our families the likes of which has never been seen before, and who knows if we would survive the fallout?

& oh my gosh that damn ending!! I want more!!😭😭😭

Lyric is this strong badass that’s highly skilled but has to hide what’s she’s capable of to try to find her sisters murder.. but she keeps finding more questions than answers!! Will she ever figure it out!? Or will she get caught & blow her cover!?

this is getting very long.
We still don't know anything about Alyssa's death, we don't know why Mel is being a bitch, we don't know anything about the TikTok stalker, we don't know what happened between Alyssa and Jude.
I mean, come on!, I already read 2 books and got nothing. I’m getting bored.
And the harem is almost non-existent.
Fuckin annoying

3.0/3.5⭐ not sure how I'm rounding at the moment

In some ways, I enjoyed this book better than the first book. I felt like the writing flow was smoothed out a bit. I got a bit more depth, connection and understanding with Lyric (FMC) and a bit more than rich frat boys in lust from Atlas and Keats - - I still think there could have been more there though, especially playing on the darkness matching each other between Keats and Lyric, don't just say that on repeat 🤦, give me something more to experience it and believe it. I like getting more exposure to the secret society stuff and hope to there's more time in that. I like her opening up to Keats and Atlas. I am eager to learn more about the guys. There has to be more to all of them but it hasn't really been shown much.

I am having a hard time with still feeling clueless as to what Jude's deal is. Like I get having an arc for revealing sh*t but isn't this series halfway through and I'm just as clueless as to why he's such a cruel a**hole to Lyric as I was at the start. Like I've learned nothing more about him, even adding his POVs. 🤔 Idgi

In other ways, the drag and detour to external plot progression had me losing interest.

A big drawback for me was not giving more progression on the plot or understanding of motivations for the players involved. The mystery drags out rather than keeping me on the edge of my seat. There are a few new questions but not really anything answered and new things added without enough hook to the intrigue. I'm honestly indifferent to continuing the series, which is kind of sad cause the premise has a lot of potential, but clearly execution matters.

The sorority drama is driving me crazy. It gets SO MUCH PAGE TIME 🙄🤦 I don't really get her decision to divert so much energy into that. Her offered explanations feel weak, especially when it's interfering at this point with what I thought was a main objective, plus the new sh*t added that she hasn't really tackled. Is this in line with her character? I didn't think so, but maybe? It puts me off for sure. She's more all over the place than focused, and reminding me of all her skills and training and how she's been through worse so she can survive whatever these sorority girls throw at her.... But for what? Doesn't feel smart, that's for sure. It all feels like it's detracting from progressing on what she's there to do and just starting to feel like a detour from the plot progression for the sake of adding drama.

I'm not entirely sure what it is with me and contemporary maffia series. Those first books always grab me. They give me some kind of adrenaline rush and I just can't stop reading. Everything about that first book fascinates me. The world, the characters, the darkness, the intrige, the political games, the roughness. And then comes the second book. And for some reason I'm always super excited, but it just doesn't give me the same feeling. This also happened with this arc.

For some reason this second book didn't grab me the same way as the first and it's hard to explain why. Maybe it's because the newness is gone, but maybe it's the second book syndrome. The first book introduced the world, the players and the stakes. In the second book we're diving more into the developing relationships and we're slowly making our way to some big reveal that will then start the next book in the series.

What I liked about this book, is that we learn a little more about the guys. We get to see more of what they do when they're not with our heroine and we learn a little about the world they're coming from. I feel like there's a lot more to tell, especially since in this book not many new surprises have come to light. I do have to admit though that Jude really intrigues me. And it's hard to say why, because it's not like he's such a nice guy. On the contrary. I don't trust him. At all.

While reading this second book I also had a lot of questions and consequently quite a few guesses about reveals I was expecting to come. I don't feel like the book is really answering those, but it did work in getting me excited about the next book in the series. I feel like we've gathered quite some information in this second book, even though that wasn't always too exciting. I can't wait to see how our heroine is gonna make the pieces of the puzzle fit. Well, if she makes it past that cliffhanger, of course!

WOW! I am really enjoying this series so far. So hard to put down. I can’t get enough! If you haven’t added this to your tbr but you enjoy dark romance with revenge and you don’t have to choose from the guys, then this book is for you!

Lyric is on the hunt to find out the truth about her sister’s death, but she keeps finding more questions then answers. She is so strong and such a badass. One of my favorite FMC by far. Thayer is warming up to me and I’m starting to like him more. Jude is still an asshole and I need to know more about him. Atlas and Keats are still number one!

BUT THAT CLIFFHANGER AT THE END! I HAD TO JUMP RIGHT INTO BOOK 3!

This was another great book in this series. It's just as twisted as the first one. Lyric is still trying to find out what happened to her sister and survive pledging. New enemies and more secrets come in this book. Some seriously steamy scences and great bloodshed.

Lyric has so much training that she did, but how is she still so dumb. She blindly follows her sister, even though she did nothing for her. I can’t read about this idiot anymore, it’s tiring and the honestly made no progress in this book at all. It was kind of like a filler to keep the romance going and to show how annoying Melody is. Confused how the mystery behind the Reagants, collective, Sampson, her dad, melody, allysa’s death, the sorority secrets, and Jude secret is all going to be revealed and covered in the next 2 books, seems a little rushed.

If I did, it would start a war between our families, the likes of which has never been seen before, and who knows if we would survive the fallout?

This is the second book in the Sweetest Revenge Series from Helen Scott and Zoey Shelby. You have to first read Bloody Princess first. You know if you have read the first book, Bloody Princess, that there are some seriously twisted things going on and that doesn't let up in the second book either. This is after all a dark romance and one heck of a twisted tale. Lyric is still trying to figure out who killed her sister. After all you can't have revenge if you don't know who did it. But she at the same time is pledging and has to survive that too. That's rough and made me so glad I was never a pledge for anything in college. There will be some new enemies that come to light in this book and a whole lost more secrets. Lyric though is still a bad butt for a girl who was raised to seduce men and kick butt. But she has had her fair share of loss and that has helped to to mold her into the amazing female character that she is. I don't know weather I would have her meet up with me for coffee or smile, say hi, and walk away quickly. But that's what a girl needs when she is facing They Boys of Ascendance Bay. These boys are all after all, from some of the wealthiest and most powerful families. But they are all in Lyric's world now and each have their part to play but they were all also friends with her little sister when she died. They all know who she is and have from the get go but that sure isn't stopping them from looking at her like she's so much more. Somehow though they all fit together and I really enjoy all of them that way. So I am rotting for getting my pants shocked off me when we find out what really happened. This is a book I could not put down and when it ended I am pretty sure my jaw was on the floor. I need the next book, Cruel Rain as soon as possible!

Let me just start by saying Lyric is as bad a**. She’s grown up in a world where she was basically secretly trained to seduce men and kick butt. She’s also faced a lot of tragedies and loss. Her loss is what brings her to where she’s at, seeking vengeance on The Boys of Ascendance Bay.

The boys all come from the wealthiest and most powerful families. They all have their own dynamic and shift in how they play apart in Lyrics world. She’s the little sister of their friend who passed, but some don’t quite look at her that way anymore.

There is so many different personalities but they all mesh so well. There is great twists and turns and something always leaving you on your toes guessing and wondering what’s coming next.

It literally takes me back to college days and everything about being in a sorority. There were so many moments I felt like fit my memories so vividly. It’s been amazing to connect to it on a different level.

The cliffhangers really keep you hanging and wanting more. However there’s going to be a bit of a wait til we get book 3 in Lyrics story. (Currently set for April 2022).

We start off from where we left off from the first book Bloody Princess and I am wanting to know more. We see more about Lyric's childhood and how she was brought up to be a fierce kill buter and heroine. But, the more she digs into finding out who killed her older sister, the guys she suspected are looking like they are innocent. But, who should she believe. I thought there might be an ending to this series in this book. So, I am anticipating the next book and will see Lyssa's murder come to light and hopefully the father isn't hiddening anything. But, I'm so glad to have read this book, the twist and turns threw me off. But, I'm going to re-read Bloody Princess again and this so I can remember everything. I hope im making sense, if not i'm sorry. So, all I'm saying is that murder mystery got my atention and I'm curious to know who dun it!

This second book in the "sweetest revenge" series starts with a warning that things will get darker, and that was not an exaggeration... While we get more details about the depraved stuff her father put her through, I'm also thrilled to see some support rise around Lyric. Atlas and Keats at least wish to protect Lyric, but that is easier said than done. Thank God (or thank these two authors) for these tiny bright spots, because most parts of this book are dark, sad and bad. I am rarely this emotionally invested in characters, but while I love Lyric I'm developping strong negative emotions towards Melody. In most books I want to slap the guys, but this time a female character is pushing all my buttons. Although some parts of this book seem to suggest she might go toe to toe with Jude in the next book...

I'm really enjoying this series, but it is definitely not a suited book for people who don't like the darker stuff our world is made off.

So this book was kind of annoying and tedious because we barely get any answers. Many of Lyrics problems become riddles and she still seems to be missing pieces. Lyric continues to be her bad self but in so many ways she lets others get over on her and I hate it particularly when it comes to her twin. They really lack that twin bond and barely communicate. Why Lyric let’s her get away with so much I don’t understand especially as she’s the youngest and kept her siblings safe by being so mistreated herself.
Two steps forward with the guys and a bunch back because everyone still has secrets. The OW drama remains highly annoying and these hazing rituals are absurd. I’m not sure how anyone is supposed to survive college with all that mess and mistrust from people you’re supposed to be bonding with. And Jude, dear dear Jude how I want to wring his neck until his neck stretches out like one of those rubber dolls. He is such a piece of shit and why he still plans to ruin Lyrics life is infuriating me. Not sure how I’m supposed to ever like him especially when he is so blatantly cruel even when faced with some of her worlds harsh realities, ie scars and flinching as if she’s in pain. To me he’s borderline dead and needs to save face rather than make a it worse but I guess we’ll see what happens. This society is a lot bigger than all of them and I’m afraid what that means.

lots of tell, give me show

TW: rape, sexual assault, bullying, child abuse (past)

Actual 2.5

Missed opportunity here to really go in on the fact that Lyric is a trained killer. Instead, we’re listening to the internal monologue of someone who is telling us that she was bred to be a weapon.

Besties show us!!! Stop talking about it and actually do it.

The spice kicked up here but not with the full harem so it’s keeping us all on our toes. I am still curious to see how the story plays out. It’s just all talk right now and it’s SO repetitive.

Also, there’s been no progress on anything. Nothing happened in this book except for boneing. What really happened with Alyssa? Why is Melody being a crusty dusty musty numpty? Why is Lyric all talk and no action?

Well fuck, the drama in this series is like being on a rollercoaster that just keeps going up and up… annnnd just when you think you’re reaching the climax it doesn’t stop. I’m just along for the ride at this point…….

My emotions were giving me serious 0 to 60 whip lash - between loving the bond she’s creating with Atlas and Keats (between the sheets and in the streets if you catch my drift 😏), the friendship she’s made in her roommate Evie, the irritation from all the shit hazing she’s receiving from the sorority (the pettiness is vexing enough to make me want to start drop kicking the Pi Ep’s sisters myself at this point 🙄) a fucking TikTok stalker set up for the APT sightings, which clearly has a vendetta against our girl, and that absolute shit storm of a bomb she dropped about her “upbringing” to the guys, Like come on can’t a girl catch a break!

And naturally we were left with an even BIGGER cliffhanger, so thanks for that. I’ll be here sobbing into my pillow because there are never enough hours in the day to finish an entire series and to say I’m hooked is an understatement, so watch this space while I scream at the books enough to have my neighbours think I’m fucking possessed.

Just when i thought i had kinda worked out whats what in Bloody Princess (book 1) but book 2 completely threw all of that out of the window. Im at a loss now who the bad guys are and who is the one that killed Lyric's sister. Still blimey im loving the journey to find out. Its the other stories that run along side this one that keep you on your toes and they are so bloody good! Add to that holy hotness Atlas & Keats who steamed up my kindle! Jude i just wanted to punch and Thayer who im still trying to work out. It all mixes to a melting pot of tension and its so good. Im dying for the next book now

So reading this book confirms it: Lyric is a bad bitch and Melody's a freaking cunt.
I like the plot/story but I feel like we are still too much in the dark about everything. We don't know that much more than we did at the beginning and it is really starting to frustrate me! The only thing that is starting to develop is her relationship with the MMCs and again, only 2 1/2 of the 4...
I didn't know this was an unfinished story when I started this so I think my frustration is only going to grow... I have so many questions!!!

Hold onto your hats everyone 😮💖!!!

W O W...the intrigue and darkness definitely ramp up in this installment of the series. Be warned, it ends with a doozy of a cliffy that'll leave you screaming for more! Lyric is one strong, resilient, fiery female that's for certain... However tiny little cracks are starting to show in her armor. The mystery of who killed her sister continues....and as usual this exciting read is chockfull of action, dark wit, alpha males, riddles within riddles, and so much betrayal. Can Lyric figure out who the liar(s) is/are before its too late? Danger is all around...welcome to the lions den, only the strongest survive.

Wowzers!!
It’s all happening in this second book of the series…
More secrets start to come to life regarding the Sterling family, Lyssas lineage and there’s certainly a question over Melody, Lyric’s not even sure she can trust her own twin anymore 😩
We learn about what Lyrics father puts her through, and fair warning it is not for the faint of heart….this book is DARK!
She’s slowly opening up to her guys , Atlas and Keats (who I’m claiming FYI!! 😍) and learning a sweeter side of intimacy 🥰 Thayer is on the fence, and Jude is still a d*#% and is determined to bury Lyric anyway he can 😠
She begins to also make headway with the secret society but still not quite sure what role they play so can’t wait to see how that pans out!!

This book has all of the DRAMA, with the guys, with the sorority, with the family, and with all of the secret organizations. I was so invested the whole time, and practically on the edge of my seat... there was not a boring moment in the whole book. I am so excited to figure out what happened to Lyric's sister and what secrets the guys are keeping, also I cannot wait to see how the guys take learning about Lyric's other life.

Dark, demented, deliciously evil. The closer Lyric believes she's coming to solve the mystery of her suster's death, the further down the rabbit hole she slides. Too many manipulative monsters spoil the $h!t-show, and the masks she must wear at all times are beginning to break. Her life was all about over at age 9, soon she'll break out of their Hell and drag them piece by mangled bloody piece into hers. Who'll be sorry then?

The reader will become fully immersed in this intriguing and dark volume. There is betrayal, abuse, danger, steam, emotions are increasing, relationships are building, and communications are improving, Vengeance is still a high priority, but at whose expense? There is more character development, making some more appealing and relatable, while others are disgusting and hateful. This book ends on a cliffhanger and I can hardly wait for the conclusion. I found this great read to be entertaining, interesting, and engaging.

Lyric really has her life very difficult. She has to hide her true powers in order to find her sister murderer and her other sister os being very difficult with her. I really don't like her sister. Ther's something there... And the regentes with theire dark aura.... They look so tempting. I wonder what Lyric Will do!
