Langston Carr is back in her hometown Marietta as the temporary event planner for the Graff Hotel. The first event on the calendar is the society wedding that should have been her big day with her loving groom, so when rodeo cowboy Bowen Ballantyne swaggers into the hotel, all hard-bodied and chivalrous, she thanks him the way any single woman needing to salve her pride would--she kisses him.
Bull rider Bowen Ballantyne thrives on competition, but this time his cowboy cousins have taken their one-upmanship challenge too far. He needs to find a bride by the end of the Copper Mountain Rodeo. Bowen's never backed down from anything, so when former barrel racer Langston Carr, his tormentor from their teen years, propositions him, Bowen rockets up the heat.
A game of pretend between rivals ... what could go wrong?
Sinclair has loved reading romance novels since she discovered Barbara Cartland historical romances when she was in sixth grade. By seventh grade, she was haunting the library shelves looking to fall in love over and over again with the heroes born from the imaginations of her favorite authors. After teaching writing classes and workshops to adults and teens for many years in Seattle and Portland, she returned to her first love of reading romances and became an editor for Tule Publishing last year. Sinclair lives in Oregon’s wine country where she and her family own a small vineyard of Pinot Noir and where she dreams of being able to write at a desk like Jane Austen instead of in parking lots waiting for her kids to finish one of their 12,000 extracurricular activities.
I received this arc from Tule Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The Cowboy’s Challenge is the second book in the Montana Rodeo Brides series by Sinclair Jayne. I read the first story in the series previously. I really enjoyed this book too. The 3 books take place at the same time with each focusing on one of the 3 Ballantyne cousins. This is a unique style of writing and I like it. Book 2 is Bowen’s story. He is the oldest cousin and is the most serious of them and also has a reputation for not having lasting relationships. Bowen is a rodeo champion and is back in Marietta for the upcoming rodeo. He is also working to fix up his grandfather’s ranch as he and his cousins do each time they are back at the ranch. After the rodeo, the Ballantynes host a Bash and the mothers of the cousins are back to get everything in shape. They’ve also said the grandfather is selling the ranch and moving with them to Denver to an assisted living facility. The family is going all out to fix everything up.
We learned in book one that the cousins have come up with a plan to try and convince their grandfather not to sell the ranch. All 3 planned to return to the ranch after retiring from the rodeo and working it with their grandfather. Their plan is a contest where each cousin will get engaged at the Bash, in front of the family to convince the grandfather they are serious about keeping the ranch. Bowen isn’t all in at the beginning with engagement but his mind changes.
Bowen is out at the bar in Marietta and as a favor helps a drunk woman back to her hotel. He learns it is the cousin of a former neighbor who had a serious crush on him when they were younger. Langston Carr is the temporary events planner at the Graff hotel and her cousin is marrying her ex fiancé, using all her wedding plans and having Lang as the planner. Lang and Bowen catch up and she shares what is going on. She caught her ex having sex with her cousin and her cousin ended up pregnant and Lang’s engagement was called off. She also later reveals to Bowen that she had been pregnant, miscarried alone and almost died with her ex doubting it all. Lang asks Bowen to pretend to be her boyfriend during the last few days of the pre-wedding events since she’s having to deal with her ex and his family and her cousins as well. They spend time in front of the groom and the others putting on a show. Initially they are acting and then it becomes real for them both. They both have chemistry but don’t acknowledge it at first.
Bowen realizes he needs to also ask Langston to be in a fake relationship for his family plan as well. She agrees and they continue dating and getting closer. Neither is looking for a relationship but both are experiencing real feelings. There’s lots of suspense as the reader wonders what will happen to their relationship, until decisions about it are made at the end. The book ends without us knowing what is going on with the grandfather and the ranch. We also know that book 3 will tell the story of the third cousin and the woman he’s chosen in the pretend engagement game. It should also resolve all the unanswered questions from books one and two. I really like the series, the characters and their interactions. I was happy to be back in Marietta and enjoyed all the references to people and places in the town. I gave it 5 stars.
The Cowboy’s Challenge continues the Montana Rodeo Brides series with Bowen and Langston taking their childhood bantering and rivalry up another level to finally acknowledge the affection that has always underlined their reactions to each other. Plus, there’s always the bonus for me of going back to my favorite fictional town of all time… Marietta, Montana. I love the bantering, the love, and the challenges between the Ballantyne cousins. And I equally enjoy watching each one fall for their lady leaving the idea of that challenge far behind, well, mostly, since these guys do love to win that’s obvious through their professions.
Langston is returning home, not quite with her tail tucked in tight but close to it after discovering her cheating ex’s actions. She’s not going to stay down for long and with Bowen back in town as well it seems like the perfect plan has just dropped into her lap. All she has to do is convince Bowen to fake a relationship with her and convince her ex’s family, as well as the jerk, that she’s doing just fine after their spectacular break-up. It won’t be for real… will it?
Bowen’s grandfather’s news of possibly selling the ranch has hit him hard. When his rodeo days were done he’d always imagined coming back to the ranch with his cousins and continuing their family legacy. Now in order to not have the ranch sold out from under them, the cousins have devised the challenge. Langston’s suggestion of a fake relationship, just pretend for a while would work perfectly with his plan to win that challenge and keep the ranch out of a stranger’s hands. Oh, sure, the sparks have always been flying around him and Langston, she can rile him up faster than a rodeo ride. But it’s all pretend, right?
I loved this couple. They are stubborn, determined, and perhaps a bit bull-headed but those sparks do ignite when they’re together. Watching them fall for real and forever was a fun, emotional journey filled with tensions, laughter, sizzle, and falling in love with the right person. I had fun here and can’t wait to return to this world in Breaking the Cowboy’s Rules.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
The Cowboy’s Challenge by Sinclair Jayne She needs a favor. He needs a bride. Langston Carr is back in her hometown Marietta as the temporary event planner for the Graff Hotel. The first event on the calendar is the society wedding that should have been her big day with her loving groom, so when rodeo cowboy Bowen Ballantyne swaggers into the hotel, all hard-bodied and chivalrous, she thanks him the way any single woman needing to salve her pride would—she kisses him. Bull rider Bowen Ballantyne thrives on competition, but this time his cowboy cousins have taken their one-upmanship challenge too far. He needs to find a bride by the end of the Copper Mountain Rodeo. Bowen’s never backed down from anything, so when former barrel racer Langston Carr, his tormentor from their teen years, propositions him, Bowen rockets up the heat. A game of pretend between rivals…what could go wrong? This is Langston Carr and Bowen Ballantyne's story. She tossed her head as if a mane of hair would bounce around her shoulders, but her short, sleek mannish bob stuck like a helmet. Still, the movement triggered something in his brain. “Bowen Ballantyne,” she said, clearly at an advantage. “You fixing to break another girl’s heart tonight?” Bowen Ballantyne turned away from his reflection in the tarnished and warped mirror behind the bar and stared moodily at the dance floor that was surprisingly busy for a Sunday night. Too early for most cowboys to be hitting town to prepare for the Copper Mountain Rodeo next weekend but eager to arrive at the ranch to see their granddad, Bowen and his two cousins had hopped in their rigs the minute their events at the Panhandle Rodeo had wrapped and driven home. He’d ignored the two beers his cousin Bodhi had ordered for him and instead picked up his whiskey and stared at the amber liquid like it had the answers he needed. The Cowboy’s Challenge by Sinclair Jayne is a 3 star book. I received a complimentary copy of the book.
I just completed Sinclair Jayne’s The Cowboy’s Challenge, book #2 in her Montana Rodeo Brides series. I’m gobsmacked every time that I read another of her stories! Her character depictions are incredible. That is certainly true with this story. I loved Langston and Bowen!
Langston Carr has returned to her childhood home of Marietta. Long gone is her mother, her alcoholic father, her unsympathetic grandfather, their family ranch, her rodeo horse, and her few cherished memories. Also gone is her cheating fiancé, her job working for his mother, all the money she spent on their future storybook wedding and life, and her hopes to finally have a loving family.
Bowen Balllantyne has just returned to Marietta with his two cousins, Bodhi and Beck. They were “thick as thieves” in their childhoods, and nothing in their years on the rodeo circuit has altered that dynamic. They have just been blindsided by their grandfather saying that he is selling the family ranch. The same ranch that has been in their family for 150 years! The same ranch that they planned to retire to after they tired of rodeo life!
Both Bowen and Langston need a date for the next 10 days, so they agree to “fake” dating. Bowen is thoughtful, quiet, and unbelievably handsome. Langston is always “all in” to whatever she is doing. A total blonde “sparkplug” who takes grief from no one. They’ve got this covered… until their mutual attraction, hot lust, and years-in-the-making love are added in!
I love Montana ranch stories, especially Marietta, especially with caring grandparents, especially with cowboys who know how to treat cowgirls. The Cowboy’s Challenge hit all of my bases!
I enjoyed returning to the Montana Rodeo Brides series. The series is about the three Ballantyne cousins who are rodeo stars and have a love for their grandfather’s Montana ranch. But now the ranch is in jeopardy of being sold. The cousins come up with an idea to try and save the ranch that they planned on retiring to one day. Maybe if they can prove to their grandfather that they are ready to settle down, he won’t sell. This is how the game of the Rodeo Brides is invented. Each cousin has to find a girl and propose to her in front of the family to get their grandfather to change is mind.
This is Bowen and Langston’s story. They are old friends who meet again when Langston moves back to Marietta and takes the event planner position at the Graff Hotel. Her first event just happens to be the wedding she spent so much time planning. Her own wedding. Only, Langston’s fiance is now marrying her cousin. Langston asks Bowen if he would pretend to be her boyfriend so the family will think she has moved on. Bowen decides Langston would be perfect as his partner for the Rodeo Brides challenge. But their acting soon becomes real and they start to fall for each other.
This was such a fun story and a perfect addition to the series. I enjoyed seeing how Langston and Bowen finally fell in love. The story is very detailed, so even if you haven’t read the first book in the series, you will still know what’s going on.
The Cowboy's Challenge may be Sinclair Jayne’s best work yet. I enjoy the first book in this series but I loved the second book in the Montana Rodeo Brides. That may be because I couldn’t help but fall a little, okay a lot for rodeo cowboy Bowen Ballantyne. However, that would not be the only reason. Everything about his grandfather became clearer to me in this book. Also the importance of family even if it one of cousins and grandfather. The verdict is still out on how I feel about the “mothers” of those cowboys.
Perhaps it is also because this story rang so true in the case of Langston Carr. When one longs for family as this woman did, one could easily look pass some glaring faults of another. Her heartbreak and betrayal felt real and personal. I was right there with Bowman wanting to help hide the bodies. Okay, I’m kidding but I did become invested in this couple’s story.
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The second book in this wonderful series set around the three cousins who have returned to Marietta for a break only to discover that their grandfather is intending to sell the family ranch that has been in the family for generations and the ranch these rodeo boys intended to retire to later in their lives. Also returning to Marietta is Langston Carr even though the town doesn't have great memories for her yes her mother father and grandfather are no longer there but she still feels judged This isn't helped by the fact that she has just left a relationship with a cheating fiancée whose mother she worked for. Bowen Ballantyne needs a date for ten days while he is town and to win the bet with his cousins she neds to mend her broken heart so date they will even if it is pretend But what happens when pretend starts to feel real Can they have a future You will have to read to see
This was such a delightful novel to read. The Cowboy's Challenge is the second book in the Montana Rodeo Brides series. I haven't read the first book yet but will be doing that very soon. I had no trouble following along having begun the series with book two. In fact, I'd like to mention while these three books represent a different couple and can be read on their own, the stories are definitely inter-connected. From what I easily inferred, all three books take place over the exact same time frame.
Langston and Bowen may have appeared from the start, opposites, however they were alike in many ways. I felt their connection from the very moment they met again. I want to say, that moment was entertaining. Yes, these two knew each other from their teen years, maybe earlier. They do have history but not the kind Langston always wished for. Bowen was enough years older at the time that he wouldn't even consider a relationship with Langston other than platonic. I won't go into details because you should unravel their pasts on your own.
Both Bowen and Langston will have decisions to make as far as how they move forward together in their future. Their relationship started out for convenience but it was easy to see they were meant for much more than a ruse. I also want to mention that there is a bit of a mystery going on with Bowen's grandfather and I suspect the resolution of that will be revealed in the next book, which I am very much looking forward to reading. This is not my first novel from this author. I have read numerous books from her and enjoyed them all. I definitely recommend this series.
While I received and advanced reading copy of this book, this is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)
Both Langston and Bowen have recently returned to Marietta. She has lost her husband to be, her home and her job. Now she is the temporary event planner at the Graf Hotel. Her first event....her wedding with the same groom and a different bride. She has to make sure the wedding she planned for herself goes perfectly for her cheating ex and his new bride. She needs a date to keep her pride. Bowen's grandfather wants to sell the ranch. The cousins need to prove to him that it can be their legacy. The cousins have a competition going to see who can get engaged first so they can convince their grandfather not to sell the ranch. She needs a fake boyfriend, he needs a fake wife. When they are together sparks fly. What could possibly go wrong. A great addition to the series.
Sinclair Jayne’s second book, The Cowboy Challenge, in the Montana Rodeo Brides series is so full of heart and warmth that it’s hard not to fall in love with Bowen and Langston. With an interesting premise the story flows quickly and carries the reader effortlessly from beginning to end. There’s a plethora of emotions threaded throughout, not only from the main characters, but from Bowen’s cousins Bodhi, and Beck as well. This is truly a story that you’ll find yourself lost in in no time.
This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
I really enjoy this book it was a great addition to this series. Honestly who doesn't love a lady in distress! I loved Langston and Bowen. The chemistry between these two was incredible. It was such a fun read from start to finish. What happens when pretend becomes so much more? Pick up this book and find out cause you really should know the answer! I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for an honest review.
What I liked best about this book is that the main characters' emotional growth occurs in believable steps that grow logically from the previous steps, not in the sudden "Ah Hah" moments common in romance stories. All the loose ends are tied up except the culmination of the Rodeo Brides TV challenge that will wrap up this 3-book series. If Book 3 is as good as Books 1 and 2, this series will rate near the top of my list.
Langston Carr comes back to her hometown when her engagement fails. She takes up a job as an event planner at the local Graff hotel and finds herself coming face to face with someone she wanted to avoid, bullrider and former crush, Bowen Ballantyne. Despite the circumstances she can't help the reignited feelings she had for him. This was an incredibly sweet cowboy romance read. I can't wait to read the next in this book series.
A cute romance. I wouldn't quite call it an enemies to friends or a second chance romance, more a blending of the two. The characters were very likeable and the story was interesting. Overall, a good story. *I received and ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Langston (F) temp wedding planner at Graff is planning her cheating ex’s wedding at Graff (originally meant to be her wedding). Meanwhile Bull Rider trio of cousins in Marietta (who knew her as kids) are trying to get their granddad to keep his ranch by pretending to get engaged to locals (including Langston aka Dandilion). Fun read, a bit hot, nice Marietta inclusions. Nice setups for other 2 cousin’s stories.
This book was wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed reading pit after reading book 1. The three cousins sure know how to make things intriguing. I am excited to read the 3rd.
Really enjoyed this second instalment of the Montana Rodeo Brides series. Bowen & Langston were fun to watch get closer. Knowing that Langston has loved Bowen since she was a young girl put a little more fairytale in this story. As Bowen helps her through an emotionally rough spot, he sees her more clearly & falls hard. Their chemistry is definitely strong & were teased for quite a while before we get to see the flash fire they create. As they finally play the game the cousins are in both hearts are going to be crushed if one or the other aren’t honest. I still feel like the cousins are being played & am a little more sure of it now. One thing I did miss was more interaction between the cousins & their women.....especially Beck & Ashni. Can’t wait to read Bodhi & Nico’s book. Definitely recommend. Thank you to Tule publishing for letting me read this book for an honest review.
The second in the Montana Rodeo Brides series finds Bowen searching for his bride. He runs across Langston and she proposes a deal to him: she will be his fake girlfriend if he will be her fake boyfriend. He is involved in a challenge with his cousins to find a fiancé and fool his grandfather. She needs someone to show her former fiancé and his family that she has moved along and is fine. It is a perfect solution for both of them until chemistry takes over. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed Lanngston and Bowen’s story in The Cowboy’s Challenge by Sinclair Jayne, book two in her Montana Rodeo Brides series. This story provides a second chance at love for Graff Hotel event planner Langston Carr, whose fiancé cheated on her with her cousin, whom he is now marrying on the same day and at the same venue as Langston had chosen for her own wedding. She’s not going to stay down for long and with rodeo cowboy Bowen Ballantyne also back in town it seems like the perfect plan has just dropped into her lap. All she has to do is convince Bowen to fake a relationship with her and convince her ex’s family, as well as the jerk, that she’s doing just fine after their spectacular break-up.
Bowen’s grandfather’s news of possibly selling the ranch has hit him hard. When his rodeo days were done he’d always imagined coming back to the ranch with his cousins and continuing their family legacy. Now in order to not have the ranch sold out from under them, the cousins have devised a challenge. Langston’s suggestion for a fake relationship fits perfectly with his plan to win that challenge and keep the ranch out of a stranger’s hands. After all, it’s all pretend; except, when the line between fake and real becomes blurred.
I loved this couple. Langston and Bowen are strong, independent, stubborn, and a bit leery of love, but the magnetic attraction and fireworks between them light up the sky when they’re together. Watching them actually fall in love was a fun, emotional journey filled with tension and laughter.
Ms. Jayne wrote a wonderfully sweet story that is definitely not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sizzling chemistry, clever banter, and endearing characters giving Langston and Bowen a chance at an unexpected and happy future together. I highly recommend The Cowboy’s Challenge to other readers. There’s been a bit of a mystery going on with Bowen's grandfather and I can’t wait to read the next book where, hopefully, all will be revealed.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I love Sinclair Jayne’s books and I love the fictional town of Marietta, Montana, a place I always feel at home, so it’s no surprise that I was happily immersed in The Cowboy’s Challenge from the start. This is the second story in the Montana Rodeo Brides series but while it links in well, it is also easy and enjoyable to read as a stand-alone novel. This story offers a second chance at love for Graff Hotel event planner Langston Carr, whose fiancé cheated on her with her cousin, whom he is now marrying on the same day and at the same venue as Langston had chosen form her own wedding. I loved the fake boyfriend arrangement she came to with rodeo cowboy Bowen Ballantyne, and it soon became apparent that Bowen was more than happy with the arrangement himself. These two made a strong and entertaining couple who were easy to cheer for. Their story is a page turner with plenty of emotion coupled with light, humorous moments that kept me smiling. It’s left me eagerly anticipating the third and final book in the series.
