Beverly Jenkins is the queen of developing characters, even in a novella such as this. Jas, Torr, and their families felt like old friends by the end of this 110 page short story, and the balance of romance and mystery was nice. Highly recommended for those needing a quick fix from one of the greatest authors of our time.

This was a cute romance suspense book. I enjoyed the last few chapters the most. Not my typical genre but was worth the read!

Rare Danger was a fantastic read with a fast-paced and exciting plot.

Jasmine Ward is passionate about her business, curating custom libraries for high-end clientele. When one of her contacts for rare books goes missing after his partner is murdered, Jas finds herself drawn into the mystery. Assisting her is private security consultant Torr Noble, a man who instantly intrigues Jas. As the connection between Jas and Torr deepens, an old enemy of Torr's returns threatening their newfound relationship and their lives.

Jas was an amazing character and I enjoyed her immensely. She's intelligent, confident, and doesn't put up with fools. We first meet Jas when she's on the blind date from hell and I thoroughly enjoyed her putting her date in his place. Torr was an absolute charmer and I loved how confident he was. The connection between Jas and Torr was immediate and their chemistry was off the charts. Their relationship develops fairly quickly but the connection between them was so believable that I was ok with how quickly things developed. When their relationship turns physical it is so well done and I really enjoyed the scenes.

The mystery in Rare Danger was very fast-paced and immediately captured my interest. The POVs in this book alternate between Jas, Torr, and the missing book dealer. The addition of the book dealer's chapters made things interesting as we see another side to what's going on compared to the limited information that Jas and Torr have. The plot is resolved much quicker than I was expecting it to but that may be because the book itself was shorter than I expected. The suspense picks up quite a bit as we get closer to the end of the book and there's a fair amount of action as well.

Overall Rare Danger was a very enjoyable read and a great first experience for me with the author's work. I highly recommend this if you're looking for a quick romantic suspense to pick up.

A great novella by the wonderful Beverly Jenkins! I really do wish this one had been longer, we got a great sense of all of the characters, and a nice slow heat before we got to the main course (so to speak) in the end. And now Ms. Jenkins has me wanting to find a personal librarian who can fill my bookshelves for me!

"Rare Danger" follows Jasmine Ware. She runs her own business finding rare books for a very discerning clientele in Detroit Michigan. Jasmine after going on one of the worst blind dates (seriously I could not stop laughing) meets a hot man in the parking lot later who she wonders about. When she goes to a client meeting the next day, she meets Torr Noble who runs his own private security firm. The two spark and want to know each other better. But when a bad book deal erupts in murder, Torr decides he is going to do what he does best to keep Jasmine safe.

Ahh. I loved both of them. Jasmine was fantastic and so was Torr (the brave). It was great to read a solid contemporary romance novella showing two Black people who are doing the damn thing as they say. The other characters in this book were great. I found it fascinating that Ms. Jenkins had both of Jasmine's parents as retired police officers. And I loved the background on Torr's family as well. I think it hits me a bit different now since we had a whole brouhaha this weekend about the "King Richard" movie. I think that most people don't get how it feels to read books or what movies/shows about successful middle class Black people.

Terri and Jasmine's other sisters need their own books please.

The writing was really good and I did shake my head though at the ending with the whole BOOM thing that happened. That felt a bit far-fetched, but I just rolled with it. The flow worked wonderfully from beginning to end.

Ms. Jenkins makes you want to visit Detroit. The setting of the book is not a new one from me. There was a romance series I read years ago set in Detroit, and I enjoyed that one too.

The ending was great and I can't wait to read from Ms. Jenkins!

2021 Winter Bingo (#SnowInLoveBingo❄️): Adventure

1) Suspense storyline overwhelmed the romantic ship to the point where latter was uninteresting, 2) some of the military/enforcement discussions were *extremely* not great, and 3) overall I was very disappointed in an author I normally like. Might have to stick to the historicals after this.

Super fun, especially in regards to the jobs of the main characters BUT WHO CARES with the sparks between them? Tight black t-shirt appreciation, helicopter, danger, yes please. Also I now have goals to be either a librarian who buys books for people to fill up their shelves OR to be able to hire someone like that for myself.

I hope to see more rom-suspense like this from Ms. Bev.

The narrator was also very good, and this was available via whispersync on KU for no additional charge.

Jasmine and Torr had quite the attraction going on!! I loved how spunky Jasmine was. She was a little demure with firecracker attitude! Then we get Torr who just had this presence when he was on the page. He had me smiling at whatever he was going to say next. The romance—sooo darn good! The suspense bits were great too, just realize going in that this novella is a romantic suspense and the romance is definitely the main focus, not the suspense.

Considering it’s short length, Ms. B packed a lot of tiny details in this story and I loved every word! One neat highlight that stuck out were Black detective writers and Michigan authors. The side characters were as colorful as the main cast and I loved the interactions! I am also hoping Jasmine’s bestie, Terri, and Torr’s brother, Kelvin, get a turn too!

I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

4 stars. Ms. Jenkins knocks it out of the park with this one. Seriously, how the hell did she manage to pack such a great story into a little over a hundred pages? I really enjoyed this and the characters were so incredibly likable.

Jasmine is a private librarian (what a dope ass job!) and she’s very intelligent. She knows her worth and what she will and won’t put up with. She has no problems standing up for herself and putting people in their place if they try her. She’s also funny and a nerd. I loved her a lot. Torr was wonderful and a sweetheart and I really appreciated how honest and upfront with Jasmine about his feelings for her. They had some really cute banter and conversations.

Sure, the ending was super rushed but again, this is only a little over a hundred pages so I was not mad about it all. The mystery was fun and I liked how everything wrapped up. I cannot recommend this enough.

Initial reaction: This was the first contemporary read of Beverly Jenkins's that I've read in a while, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. What made it work for me was the chemistry between Jas and Torr, which was a great dynamic to watch in this short read. Probably rating 4.5 stars overall.

Full review:

Beverly Jenkins's "Rare Danger" was the right read at the right time for me in more ways than one. If I had to describe the experience myself in three words, it would be "cozy romantic suspense", though the tone isn't so much cozy given the circumstances the two leads find themselves in. Main reason I say "cozy" is because I'm familiar with a lot of action-based tales where the leads find themselves in dangerous situations and have to work together to solve the common mystery while keeping themselves and those they love safe. It's one of my favorite types of stories, so I'm familiar with the themes and tropes of it at the bare bones, so I don't mind sinking my teeth into a quick read in that vein.

"Rare Danger" felt like a warm return to that theme in a shorter format with characters and a scenario I loved watching unfold. Take a story set in Detroit - featuring a Black heroine who is a self-made rare book seller. Add in a Black hero who is an Air Force vet and private security runner, bring them together in a series of events that place them in tense-for-different-reasons encounters. Add an intriguing collective cast of family and friends to the mix and you get the experience that is this novella. This was just the right length to bring a satisfying romantic tale to the forefront, though I could have easily appreciated a full length novel of this for a deeper dive.

Much of the novella works in watching the unfolding relationship between Jasmine (Jas) Ware and Torr Noble. If you like character-driven tales with sweet romantic chemistry, this is definitely one that works on that front. Jas and Torr's stories begin with a chance encounter after Jas's blind date goes horribly wrong. They share a connection that doesn't appear to cross at first but by coincidental encounters. (Learning the backstory behind Torr's name was cute, too. I also believed in the affectionate names they had for each other and a few well placed cultural references that even further brought their dynamic together.)

Jas and Torr become further intertwined within the mystery of a man who goes missing after his partner is murdered, partner's noted severed hands to boot. The prologue touches a bit on the circumstances and the crime case is developed through the story as the primary dynamic for the mystery. When it becomes clear this is a case that ties their paths and families together, they have to determine the circumstances to stop the killer from striking again. The story is self-contained, giving context to the unfolding mystery and crimes that have occurred which lead to the disappearances and Jas's life coming into danger through her connections, alongside old problems for Torr.

Readers expecting more of a deeper dive into the mystery and progression to action may be left wanting more because a lot happens in short succession. So fast at a point for the action that it doesn't have the same steady build as the relationships. That would probably be the one main critique I could give in the thick of this. But in taking the larger context of the story, I appreciated the steadily building moments of conflict and dynamic that developed between Jas and Torr. As quickly as they were thrown into the same circumstances, it was a connection that came to be palpable and believable.

I really enjoyed this return to reading contemporary romance from Ms. Bev and could see myself revisiting it for the heroine/hero dynamic alone. Looking forward to reading more from the author as well.

Overall score: 4.5/5 stars.

Note: I received this novella as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher.

I just love author Beverly Jenkins contemporary romances. And this one is no exception.

This isn't a long story but it packs a powerful punch. Jasmine Ware curates books for an exclusive clientele, and after a disastrous blind date that was set up by her best friend, a gentlemen seemingly comes out of nowhere watches with as a blind date's pressure care gets repoed, now you want to talk about Karma LOL! The stranger was intriguing to Jasmine but as the daughter of two retired former police officers, she is taught to always be careful and to carry her piece in her purse at all times.

Torr Noble is a man of significant means, worldly and running a multimillion-dollar security firm. He doesn't lack for women's attention but it is getting tiring and as he comes upon a woman that he stands with to watch her blind date's car repossessed, he wonders about her. While he waits for her sister to pick her up, he can't help but wonder why would a woman like that be out with a guy like but before it could go any further Jasmine's sister comes and she leaves.

Torr wanting to get some books into one of the rooms he has constructed into a library, his brother Kelvin suggests he reach out to woman that specializes in getting books for her clientele and to Torr's surprise and intrigue it is Jasmine, the woman from the night before.

As we know author Beverly Jenkins brings the heat, suspense, drama, intrigue, danger and most importantly the love. An amazing story from start to finish that I wished was longer but it doesn't take away from this read at all. I loved it.

I've said before that I rarely think novellas are an author's best work, and for me, this was an example of that truism. It's also a matter of premise to reader match, because insta love rarely works for me as a trope. This particular work sort of mashed those two problems together into something that was completely fine, but did not speak to me at all.

This is a Romantic Suspense about a librarian! That alone had me sold! Ms. Jenkins is known for her Historical Romances, but she had me hooked right off the bat!

This book opens with our heroine Jasmine on a really bad blind date. But this ridiculous jerk gets his car repossessed right in front of her. It’s epic. The guy doing the repossessing? A super hot man who then waits with her to make sure she gets a ride home. He’s…sweet. For a repo man.

Jasmine isn’t just a librarian. She has a niche business where she helps people track down rare books, or even creates entire collections for them. Like an interior designer but with books. She’s even tracked down rare maps. Research is her bread and butter. She has a meeting with a new client who wants an entire library of local authors, and when she meets him? It’s her sexy repo man from the other night. Except Torr’s not actually a repo man. He’s in the security business. He was just doing a favor for a friend that night. The attraction from the other night is still there, and it’s even stronger. Not knowing how to handle it, he’s blunt, and to the point. He’s attracted to Jasmine, and he makes no bones about it.

Jasmine is wary, but not uninterested. They make a lunch date and decide to see what happens. Well, what happens is that being on the hunt for antiquities and rare items can attract dangerous enemies. When Jasmine is in the sights of some really bad people, Torr is there to help.

This novella is sexy, intriguing, and full of action. I loved Jasmine. I loved her so much. She’s strong, she’s competent, she knows her worth and is one hundred percent okay with telling people that. Torr is exciting, trustworthy, and he knows immediately that Jasmine is it for him. I really liked how this author wrote her characters. They feel real, solid, and like someone I would love to get to know. I enjoyed living in her world for the afternoon.

Ms. Jenkins is a Romancelania staple, and some of her earlier books are classics. If you haven’t read her, you’re missing out. This is a great book to start with if you’re new to the writing of Ms. Bev. Grab this one, you won’t regret it. Fun, witty, and suspenseful. I loved this and would one hundred percent read a series based off Torr’s security force.

Quick, fast, action packed read. Loved the chemistry between Lady Librarian Jasmine and Torr the Brave. Loved the setup of how they met when Jasmine was on a blind date from hell and also loved their misunderstanding getting cleared up with a simple conversation. Ultimately, I really liked that for being a romantic suspense, it still managed to be fairly low angst.

I liked RARE DANGER but I think it suffered under the novella format because everything happened so fast and there wasn't much time to build the suspense or tension surrounding our villain. It almost felt like the story was being told from a third party observer who was just recounting the events and this created a disconnect with the emotional side of the story.

That being said, I really liked both Jasmine and Torr as characters and I would have loved to read more about them. While the plot didn't do much for me, the characters really shined and kept me going. Jasmine was self-assured and tough and Torr was charming and rugged; together they make a great investigative team and couple. They fall in love quickly but they know what they want in life and go for it. Side bonus, I also loved all the librarian touches.

Beverly Jenkins’ new novella, Rare Danger packs a huge punch! It is a fast-paced, thrilling, page-turning tale about instant attraction, romance, murder and mayhem. And if that’s not enough, consider professional thieves and stolen goods.

Jenkins has once again dove into her romantic suspense toolbox and created a gem in a cast of characters who are unforgettable. When we meet main character Jasmine, she’s found a passion in curating books for exclusive clientele. To date her business is booming. But she hasn’t been as successful with dating.

In a chance encounter she meets Torr who comes to her aid after a disaster date. Jasmine and Torr will find that they have more in common than just their interest in one another when a man is murdered and another that they also know is missing.

I really enjoyed this book and of course I hope to see these characters together again.

Jasmine & Torr.
Explosive. Fast Paced. Sexy.
This novella is a quick read. Jasmine is a book curator and Torr is private security specialist. They have an instant connection dare I say live at first sight. Their connection takes them on a fast paced journey to find a missing artifact. Guns. Choppers. Darts. Tasers. Lust. Everything you need for a proper mission.

This novels is thrilling ride. A romantic suspense that burns quickly. I love Beverly Jenkins historical romance and this contemporary does not disappoint.

That cover is absolutely perfect for the book! Lots of books, a woman who looks like she knows what she’s doing, just perfection. I’ve never read a novella from Beverly Jenkins before, let alone one of her romantic suspense books, so while I’m a huge fan of the Queen of Romancelandia, this was a new experience for me. Even with a shorter word count, she still delivers lots of humor, heat and action.

“Good grief, I go away for ten days, and you get involved with all kinds of stuff. Fine-as-frog-hair jet pilots. Missing old folks. Town cars. Suspect foreigners.”

Jas left her job as a librarian to run her own business providing custom libraries tailored to her high-earning clients’ reading interests, from local authors to rare first editions to, uh, monochrome backgrounds for Instagram. A first date disaster ends in epic karma when her date’s car gets repossessed, and a very handsome bystander waits with her until her ride arrives. It’s even more of a surprise when that man turns out to be a new client. But a family friend – and one of Jas’s suppliers – has ended up in hot water, and Torr is also inextricably involved. Can they trust each other – and their attraction – long enough to find the supplier?

“I know that kelvin is a temperature measurement. But no idea what torr refers to.”
“A measure of pressure.”
The response held such a sensual tone, her pressure climbed like a cartoon thermometer on a hot day.

Jas was a wonderful character, confidant and self-assured. And with two retired cops for parents, Jas knows how to defend herself. She knows her own worth and refuses to settle for anything less, and even if Torr is charming and hot, that doesn’t mean their attraction has to go anywhere. Torr runs a private security firm, and while he usually has a good idea of a person’s character, that doesn’t mean he can trust Jas off the bat, especially if his family might be involved. But he’s confidant that he can handle whatever comes up. I loved the banter between them, how Jas gave as good as she got, and their chemistry sizzled off the page. I also loved that when an issue cropped up in their relationship, rather than ghosting him, Jas instead insists on talking to him in person. They’re able to talk it out with a minimum of angst, and it was just so refreshing.

Overall, a very enjoyable novella, though of course I wish it was longer! I’m definitely going to have to put some of Ms. Bev’s contemporaries higher up on my TBR.

I received an advance review copy of this book from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This was my first Beverly Jenkins book, and it was really cute. I WOULD have given it 5 STARS, but I gave it 3 stars because it's technically military and cop propaganda, and I didn't know the cops or military were in this story at all. Honestly, if I had known, I wouldn't have bought it even though I got the audiobook for like $1.99.

I heard "librarian suspense" and "set in Detroit" and I snapped this up immediately. It was a really fun read, immediately engaging, and full of great characters. It is, however, very short, so I was kind of left wanting more. The chemistry between the leads was great and the plot was interesting, but it was all over so quickly! Still definitely recommended for when you want/need a small burst of romantic suspense.

I've found my calling. I want to be a concierge book buyer/library setter-upper...how do I make that happen?!?

Rare Danger was an entertaining read, quick and easy. I enjoyed the suspenseful aspect, although it came together in the end pretty quickly, but I guess that's what you get with a novella! It was a definite case of insta-love as well.
The character development and world building was excellent. I think a series based on Jasmine and Torr solving mysteries and getting caught up in trouble would be awesome!

I haven't picked up a Beverly Jenkins novel in quite some time and hate to say that I won't wait the duration that I did to read another one of her novels. Wow what a story! "Rare Danger was a fast-paced story with an action filled plot.

The story is of Jasmine Ward who is a curator for an elite clientele. It starts when a collector of rare books goes missing after his business partner is murdered, she finds herself pulled into fray. She is assisted by Torr Noble who captures Jasmine's attention and who also is a security consultant. As they work together in this mystery, their relationship grows into something more but later is threatened by an enemy of Torr. Jasmine and Torr's relationship is at state as well as their lives. I thought the heroine, Jasmine was a smart and resourceful woman while Torr was confident and a charmer. Although there are times when I love insta-attraction, I do like a slow build between the in order for them to get to know one another. In this case, I think Ms. Jenkins did a wonderful job of developing their attraction although it was a bit quick. I do love steamy between the H/h and the intimate scenes were on point for my liking.

This was a quick read for me as the plot was quicker than anticipated. I chalk it up to being a shorter novel than the norm I typically read. If you like a fast-paced, romantic suspense story, then I would recommend you read this one. It is worth it and I enjoyed it very much. Kudos Ms. Jenkins...looking to reading more from you.
