this Welsh learners book starts with an introduction to the people/characters 🙂 then there's 6 short stories.
the stories (and language level) were simple but not patronising. there was plenty of humour. some nice and quite involved scenarios, especially given that most stories were about 6 min long! some fun language/sentences, etc. 😁
the stories have a nice clear format/pattern. they're told by Alix, a young police officer, and are kinda short stories/diary entries about their days at work/a day at work. they're friendly and conversational in tone. most feature Alix and her colleague Sian out on patrol in the town etc, and what they encountered that day, with abit back at the police station, and in it's canteen with colleagues. there's lots of banter and camaraderie 🙂 and there's a kinda cosy small town feel, where people know people. there is quite abit of drama, but it's well balanced by the humour... and everything turns out OK in the end 😉
a very accessible and fun Welsh learners resource 😁
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
accessed as a library audiobook, read by Y Lolfa. (the reader attributed is a publisher, and not a specific person. I'm noticing that's maybe the same with a few of the Welsh learners resources I'm accessing from the library - I'm not sure if it's a library cataloguing issue, or something at the publishers end).
Witty, funny, entertaining and a good read - I look forward to reading more by Lois Arnold.
Have to say too that the enjoyment was very much enhanced by Carl Pearce’s illustrations. I will definitely be seeking out more of his work too. Hopefully he has some graphic novels in the pipeline.I appreciated his including some black and Asian portrayals of a number of characters.
Incidentally, while reading this, we went on a day trip to a lovely Welsh coastal town, and were walking along the seafront when two young policewomen came sauntering past us who bore a marked resemblance to Alix and Sian! Did Carl Pearce use them as models, I wonder? Just saying! 😁
Written in Welsh --A short book about Alix and the other police officers. A beginner's reading book, the stories are quick and the illustrations are great.
Ruddy brilliant! This is probably my favourite Amdani book so far - it's light hearted, with the self-contained short story format that I think really suits learner books. 23-year-old trainee officer Alix Jenkins describes some of her funnier incidents on patrol with her constantly-snacking mentor, Sian. The story themes are set up quite seriously (protests, missing people, medical emergencies, a host of pobl ddrwg) but there's always a twist in the tale that brings the book back to its all's-well-that-ends-well sense of humour. Given that I really liked Lois Arnold's previous book E-Ffrindiau too, she's definitely an author I want to read more of.
In my opinion the difficulty is easy for late Mynediad - past, present and future tenses are used, there's plenty of translation in the footnotes, and there's some excellent artwork in there reminiscent of American graphic novels (which only makes the humorous illustrations funnier). Upon googling Carl Pearce, he's done a lot of kids' books and deserves your follow on instagram (@carlpearcetheillustrator), go check his work out.
Will recommend this to my Mynediad class - da iawn!
I loved reading this and it was a nice challenge to my budding Welsh. I understood most so it was a great book for a beginner and they provided the translation for any words you may not have come across at the end.
It was a fun read, following a handful of different police cases, from burglaries to collegue banter to missing persons.
It was a very useful learning tool and I’ll definitely keep returning back to this (and others in the beginner learning series) to keep building on my Welsh comprehension.
Fun and easy-to-read book for Welsh learners in the second half of Mynediad (our course recommends it at Uned 16). The book is a series of short stories following the career of PC Alix and her colleagues. There's a nice mix of stories, and a good range of tenses, although, as always, the 'new' words included in the vocab are a bit random, including some we learned ages ago but not others I'd never heard of before! Still, my Geiriadur Mawr is never out of reach when I'm reading Welsh, so no harm done.
