peter and the wolves is basically the story is about peter royale, youngest prince in the city of novoberg, as he was thrown out of the city as a prank by his bully brothers. one of them said "let's throw peter's gay ass into the wolves" (they didn't directly said this but you get the point lol) and yep sure they did. peter as he wanders in the forest met one of the wolves and turns out it's not actually a wolf but a big man. a hunter to be precise. by this book's definition, a 'wolf' is a forest-dweller casted out by their particular city for being *drumroll* gay. so obviously wolves band themselves together forming packs with a leader to lead them on. and each pack looks for a particular 'pup' to satisfy their sexual urges. another is that not all packs in the forest got pups because they're a rare commodity. so peter, in addition to him being a noble born, going into the forest and becoming this certain pack's pup made this forest alive.

"Sascha's not the one who throws me out of his room the second he's done with me," I reminded Dmitri.
Dmitri chuckled. "I just want to fuck you. I don't want to kiss and cuddle and pretend everything is all happily ever after with you."
"Then we're in agreement," I said. "All I want is for you to fuck me and make me come. I don't even want to be your friend."
Dmitri laughed aloud.

lord why am i so weak for the strong alpha men in books? my knees always crumble for some reason. welcome to another of journey of me unearthing goodread's hidden gems. hours of me digging made me find this hidden treasure and i loved it. critically this book is far from the best but on my personal enjoyment level it was pretty damn high. for most part, the plot was like this day-to-day events in peter's new household with his found pack. on the other hand, i was turned on and i swooned a lot shockingly even if the romance was in very stockholm syndrome-ish vibe. also, i felt fucking betrayed with that particular scene especially after falling in love for these characters. i was like tyra banks shouting "i was rooting for you! we were all rooting for you!" for that one scene in antm. that betrayal here was cut too deep to the point that i even put this book down for like 3 times just for me to breathe properly. this story was quite wholesome until it turned into darker route. as a reader, i know there was this darkness creeping in and me being stupid chose to ignore it. i thought nothing can faze me anymore but this one did it. also, even though this story was bombarded with sex (every chapter actually), i just love the sense of community. all of the wolves here care deeply for peter and his well being. they may disagree among themselves but peter's needs must be taken care of first. overall, i really enjoyed this. i even loved it. it is one of those stories that i won't forget no doubt. miss merry farmer, i'll be on the lookout for more of your works.

Ok ya’ll.

This was basically smut every chapter BUT I loved this something fierce. Peter is such an interesting character. I thought he would be submissive af but dude is FIERY.

I thought he would end up with Sascha but MAYBE NOT?! So basically I need a minute to digest this deliciousness before jumping into book two but guh. If you like smut, MMM+, and dirty raw sex, just read this.

TW for rape (on page), non con, dub con, drug use (against one’s will) - Those are the most major ones I can remember so if that bothers you, maybe skip this one.

I know, I know, if you read smut you should be prepared that it is likely porn without much of plot or character, but still I keep hoping and sometimes I even find something that surprises me by being smutty as hell and still well written. Well, "Peter and the wolves" did not quite manage that. The plot and characters were all very clichéd and predictable and ... kind of irrational. I mean, really, Peter is practically kidnapped and date-raped and he just accepts this as a good turn of fate and enjoys it without blinking. There were however hints foremost in the worldbuilding that did show that this could have been more.

I'm a terrible person😭. I just can't get myself to ship Sascha and Peter. I'm stuck with the Dmitri and Peter pair even after seeing what a horrifyingly sick person Dmitri is.

As you can see I enjoyed the middle parts of the book way better than the end or beginning. Might've skimmed some of the sex scenes too.

Also I'm glad it wasn't a harem because I didn't really like the dynamics to be honest.

I'm really not sure about the turn the book is taking towards politics either😖.

Q- Did I love it?

A- No, but I did enjoy it and I really liked the setting and politics of it.

A- Unfortunately, no. Even tho I'm drawn in by the politics of it and wanted to know what happens next.


Q- So...Why?

A- I really liked Peter and Sascha together but when I read the blurb for the next book I found they are going to break up; also I saw people mention that breakup is brutal as hell. Honestly my fav character in the whole book was Sascha and if he's going to get hurt that bad, I don't think I'm up for that heartache right now🤷‍♀️

Just wow

As I was reading this book I found it really disturbing and trust me I’ve read Fallocaust by Quil Carter and that book is pretty disturbing.
I only read half way till I said it was enough and what a waste of time. It’s like a straight erotic book with really no background story to go along with how long this book is.
Peter is by far the worst character I’ve ever read. His whole life he’s been treated like dirt and then when he gets kidnapped and literally date assault kind of scene he revels in it. He claims he loves the leader but he’s just trying to climb up the ladder. He’s manipulative and conniving. It’s really disgusting. Even after all that’s happened to him he shouldn’t be this way. I just couldnt read anymore it’s all too disgusting. Literally sex in every chapter and nothing about character development. It’s really sad because this book had so much potential and it just fell to where it couldn’t be saved anymore. Demitri is also bad he treats Peter like a worn out trashed condom and Peter loves that. Lots of self hatred along with Stockholm syndrome.

This series was recommended to me when I asked for dark, demented, practically pitch-black romance.

It was NOT that.
And I am laughing my ass off while confessing this.

Because I can describe my opinion of this story in two simple words- STUPIDLY IRRATIONAL.

Those two words describe it to a T. Almost everything brought on the reaction "Huh, what? How can that even be possible? *Amused snort* " 🤡

DNF at 56%. This story just wasn’t for me, too slow moving and I didn’t like Peter. At all. He wasn’t endearing to me. He was cold and kind of a jerk. He thought too highly of himself and his place in the world. I started skimming the last couple chapters to see if the story would grab me, the steamy scenes didn’t draw me in, so I was literally skimming those and reading the plot between which was lacking. I dunno, just wasn’t for me.

First, let me say that Merry Farmer is one of the best writers around. Second this is a departure from what you've read of hers before. This is a true labor of love in that she's putting herself out there for the sake of bringing us this fantastic story in a world unlike any other. Now, Peter. He is multifaceted and very thoughtful. In this story he is coming of age so to speak and discovering who he truly is and can be. There are a host of characters Peter meets that will intrigue you, conflict you and you'll grow to love and hate. The world that Merry created for Peter and the Wolves is amazing. It sparked my curiosity and made me want more. Then there is the sexy bits. There are a lot of sexy times and it's all pertinent to the storyline. At the heart of this book is relationships. The beauty, strife, confusion, joy and fear of them. I highly recommend giving this book a read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Peters seed of growth

I'm giving up on this! I was expecting a little bit dark mmm+ fantasy book. A lot of smut,less plot, hot hot book about lucky Peter.
And this is what I got:

Peter had awful childhood with abuse, neglect and no good interactions with anyone at all. He was beaten repeatedly and endured awful behaviour from all his family members and family friends.
He is 20 and never been hugged, kissed, caressed or heard any kind word.
He lives in over the top homophobic imaginary society where gay man are thrown out of cities and left to die in the woods or worse.
These gay man are represented like sexual predators who often capture and enslave, rape youngsters.
And what do you think??? These rumours are true.
Than most awful thing befalls to Peter. His brothers throws him out of the city in the middle of the night. He stumbles in the woods and one of the creeps finds him. Lets pretend that this creep is ugly and nasty (in this book he is VERY sexy.... mmmhmmmm...) and Peter has to choose - die in the freezing woods or go with the creep. All in all I think there was no choice because he would have been made to go in any circumstances. In the cabin in the woods live 5 huge wolfs/ rapey men , let's say they all are ugly nasty old men ( ofcourse in the book they all sex gods so all is forgiven). Peter is drugged and raped repeatedly then he passes out. From this moment on we have amazing example of Stockholm sindrom. Everything is justified because Peter likes almost everyman, is very horny, a bit painslut, is treated like possession,never to leave again.
And there is gonna be on page very violent rape chapter I heard. Thanks but no thanks.
What annoyed me the most is that these gay men are demonstrated like child molesters, rapists and kidnapers. It's common practice there.
Example:

“That’s why a good half of pups are captured or bought at faires.”
“Bought?” I stiffened so fast that Ivan’s razor cut into my calf.

“Young men are purchased at faires? Do you mean…as slaves?”
They both glanced guiltily at me. “‘Slave’ is such a charged word,” Sven said.

No wonder Gregor had looked guilty when he mentioned how much the tea mixture that they’d given me last night fetched. Out there in the forest, young men—perhaps no more than boys—were likely kidnapped or captured and forced to do all the things (raped)

This conversation happens in the middle of two creeps are shaving Peter against his will. Why? Because creeps like their boys looking as young and innocent as they could, before adolescence. You mean raping kids right??

I don't care if there gonna be happily ever after.
I just want to march into those woods and shoot every motherf**** who abused boys!

I expected to like this book - and admittedly, did enjoy certain parts - but the more I reflect on it afterwards, the more it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. At the beginning I was willing to overlook Peter's immediate acceptance of his situation considering how touch-starved he was as a result of being neglected as a child/teenager, and that the author did seem to imply (using examples other than Peter) that there was a wrongness to the practices that happened that first night. And yet, no recognition in respect of Peter himself - and why? Because afterwards he claimed to have liked it? Does that really make it acceptable? (no)

And then there's the subsequent acts that lean towards rather disturbing concepts such as favouring the 'young' pups, kidnapping young men, and the general culture of rape (which apparently is only a crime if it's committed against a pup not of your own pack?) The ending suggests that the remainder of the series may be targeted towards a political takedown of such practices, but the lack of immediate horror/disgust/apology by the main characters makes me uneasy.

Then we have Peter, the MC. I appreciated how he was a complex character who didn't always act as expected (it keeps you on your toes and makes you realise there's a lot more to learn about him), but it certainly doesn't make him likeable or supportable. He's cold, climbs over people for his own purposes, and expected an old friend to be 'forever grateful' to him for essentially selling him as a sex slave.

Two more large gripes: that the relationship built in the first book, although there were clear hints that it was not an eternal type of love, apparently is dropped entirely in favour of a different relationship for the remainder of the series. I don't mind the concept of someone not being with another someone forever, but that feels really jarring considering the amount of page time given to the relationship in the first book, and that there were an inordinate number of typographical errors. A couple can be forgiven, but dozens are disappointing.

I was expecting a fun, sexy time with a little darkness. I was not anticipating what basically amounts to an extremely frustrating love triangle that could be solved if the people involved had a conversation that culminated in an extremely violent rape scene that lasts the better part of an entire chapter. Was already feeling weird with its conceptions of gay men as highly predatory towards youngers, but it makes it more frustrating when it shows glimpses of self-awareness of the whole situation and how kind of messed up it is. Just a real mood killer all around.

I'm assuming everyone who picks this up is here for the smut. But unless you're super into noncon or you see being infantalized as romantic, there's not going to be much in this for you. The "sex scenes" are all just thinly veiled rape.

The things I did like:

The author takes care in developing her main character, Peter. Throughout the story he goes from a horny virgin to a confident... whore. The book calls whores "pups", because they are shared between "wolves", which is what people call gay men that live in the forest outside of main cities. I'm all for stories where a character blossoms into their sexuality so I was happy for that arc. It was almost believable how he went from being a captor to a respected member of the pack.

I like that Peter didn't lean too hard into stereotypes, in fact he was more of a contradiction to what others perceived him as. He looks and acts very sweet and meek, but he doesn't care deeply about anyone in his pack. Even Sasha, whose company he enjoys most, and who he says he trusts with his life, irritates the hell out of him. Peter even goes so far as to call him out for being a weak-ass pack leader.

Although I am curious to see what Peter can accomplish in the next book, there's plenty of issues throughout that make me hesitant to keep going.

First, the pace is too slow. I feel like things are described both too much and not vividly enough to keep my attention. All the descriptions of pack members were info dumped right on their introduction, so I kept forgetting who was who. Most people are put into categories of how hot Peter finds them anyways, so they are either described as gross or ultra hot/masculine/alpha without much nuance.

There seems to be literally no cohesion with what kind of laws and morals these people follow. Peter's pack are apparently sympathetic, good natured people. And yet upon meeting Peter, they lure him into their house, drug him, and gang rape him. Despite Peter being like "I would have wanted this anyway", doesn't mean that what they did to him was right.

They don't bat an eye at slaves being beaten and sold at fairs. In their view, buying a slave or catching a pup and then coercing them into having sex with you is not rape. But REAL rape, whatever that is, is punishable by getting your balls smashed by a big rock publicly at the fair. I honestly do not see much of a difference between what Dimitri and his friends did to Peter, and what Sasha's pack did, other than the fact that Dimitri screwed up and gave him too many drugs by accident and messed him up. They are all rapists.

In fact, I prefer Dimitri over Sasha because at least he was upfront about what he was doing and understood that what they had was lust and not love. He even offered Peter a way out, by introducing him to people who would actually PAY him for sex in which he could use to gain his own independence. Sasha would never. Unfortunately when Peter dumbly decides he'd rather stay with his captors, Dimitri just forces him anyway which was really disappointing.

It doesn't make sense to me that the only people that live outside of city walls are gay. Gay men are often described as being feral, brutal, horny, or submissive pups, which seems kind of wrong. There's just a lot that feels icky and there's not a lot of hope given that there are actually decent people that live in this world.

So I dunno. This book is definitely a guilty pleasure and had enough to keep me interested, but the writing wasn't quite there to pull me in completely. And to be honest, the sex scenes weren't that hot and left a sour taste in my mouth afterwards.

DNF @ 52%. I love a smut filled book, specially if it has even a bit of plot. But this book bored me out of my mind even though it had both things.

First of all, I disliked peter a lot. He basically turns into a horn dog that can't function properly the moment anyone touches near his crotch. Like ok it feels good, but I doubt anyone can be in the mood 6 times in a day after being gangb4nged by 4 guys just hours before. Oh and did I mention peter was a virgin before the bang? Yeah, even more unbelievable.

Which is another point I was annoyed by. So peter gets kidnapped and then rap3d by strangers and he doesn't fight before or after. He just rolls with it cuz they're hot. I bet he wouldn't be so on board and that this would be a very different story if they were all ugly, old, fat and lived in a cave in the woods like actual forest dwellers of this "duke" time period would. Not in a magical fairytale house with all the amenities. Like unless the last chapter reveals this is a fever dream by peter and then revealing his real situation of being kidnapped in the woods, I dont buy it. Like they even go to his castle and get his possessions... I mean seriously?!

But again, lets go back to peter. His personality and inner monolonge just rub me the wrong way. He's been mistreated, bullied and hurt all his life, but the moment anyone gives him a bit of kindness he turns conniving and starts looking for ways to exploit that. Which makes him super unlikable. I would enjoy this mindset more if he fought being a pup and was looking for ways to run and didn't willingly go to bed with his captors, but he doesn't. He seems right at home and doesn't seem to want to leave even tho he mentally complains about being treated as a toy. So his underhanded and almost cruel thinking mindset is jarring and makes me not want to root for him. Like either he hates his captors or likes them, not both at the same time. At least for my taste.

There's also so many other issues that just made me frown. Like the constant mention of peters large endowment for being so delicate, but then peter keeps saying hes no beanpole or he's not light ect. Decide if either hes delicate or not. Also, the older guys were wayyyyy too obsessed with pups being very young men. Example, at one point sasha tells peter that once he's older he wont be a pup, which is super creepy. At first I thought pups were just effeminate men or men who liked to bottom, but yeah no, the book quickly takes it into creeper territory by continuously stating that peter looks 12 but with apparently a thrid leg hanging from his crotch and won't be pup material once he looks older.

I won't even get into the buying pups or the magical concoction they sell thats basically a rap3 drug. But yeah so many just weird things in this book that started quite interesting and promising until peter didn't fight back or even object once he realized he had been kidnapped and 4 men were gonna rap3 him...

So yeah, I'll pass on this one.

This was...a read. I wanted to like this, but the book just felt all over the place with what it was trying to do. The sex scenes were well-written but the story itself? It really wanted to play up what I felt was omegaverse without actually being omegaverse, but without that there it just felt like predatory fetishization of young men (I have a lot against omegaverse as well for this specific stuff, I don't wanna make it seem like I'm targeting the author because they didn't write omegaverse). The love triangle was frustrating both in its dynamics and the characters involved. Peter would talk about how he didn't like the pedestal he was placed on while also being little more than a sex slave, yet also bask in the attentions given him. He didn't like that he was made to look even younger than he already appeared, and yet would be aroused when people did such a thing to him.

There was also that moment in the faire when Peter encountered one of his friends and one of his bullies being captured and being sold as slaves to the crowd. And in that, while Peter privately railed at his own status, willingly offered up both people to be bought by a side character without any sort of guilt despite being disgusted at the thought that the group as a whole was suffering that fate. And later imposes on his old friend that being sold as a sex slave was something that Peter's friend owed him for. This isn't even going into how the love triangle was "Resolved" by Peter being raped by Dmitri and his friends in order for Dmitri to make his own pack, and said rape lasting almost an entire chapter.

I finished this book just for the sake of finishing but man, I really wish this would have been something else, and I was exhausted by the end of it. Great for you if you enjoyed it, but it's really not my thing.

I didn't know what to expect going into this, but I thought it was exceptional. Peter and the wolves have very complex dynamics in a polyam setting, and some of the character beats had me sitting back just to bask in how well they landed. I also didn't expect to love Peter as much as I did by the end, but he's such a layered character, and he grows and evolves so much - becomes stronger, surer, steadier, and paradoxically, exactly what he'd been trained to be, if in a completely different situation than anything he might've imagined growing up. And the best part is that there are more books coming in the series, so we'll get to see him continue to evolve. Can't wait!

That said, this book is very dark. Trigger warnings: childhood parental neglect and severe bullying, heavy power imbalance, threat of sexual assault, violence, multiple instances of non-consensual drug use, on-page graphic sexual assault resulting in severe physical and psychological trauma, including hallucinations and panic attacks, rape recovery. I thought it was all handled well and it was all addressed, and most of it is relatively contained at the start and end of the book, but it's worth knowing before going in.

Was looking for something 'new' to read. Also open to finding good works of gay literature and romance. Came across this recommendation and thought I'd give it a try. I have read other reviews - seems like folks either really like it or really don't - no in-between. I guess I'd fall into the really like it group. I enjoyed the development of new characters and story. I like the historical fiction - real enough but also hazy enough to not be bound to any one place or exact time. I like the development, especially, of the two main characters Peter and Sasha. What starts out as slave/master develops into a type of love which is touching and caring. Yet we are left knowing that this relationship may not last.

The negatives largely focus around the fact that the work depicts two scene of gang rape. Truly, a touchy depiction. Yet how those events were handled and responded to in the story makes clear that the acts were wrong and had consequences.

I understand this book is the first of a 6-volume series. I didn't know this to start, but am certainly looking forward to the additional volumes in the series.

I've never read one of Merry's books before, but since I'm about to meet them at an author event, I decided it was a good time to try. I really enjoyed the overall story, but most of all, for the promise of what is to come. Right from the beginning, I could feel the potential growth of the characters and the plot. Of course, the road there will no doubt be a bumpy one.

Peter is put through some terrible trials. Please, please, please read the content warning if you're sensitive to abuse. It was difficult to get through, certainly didn't shy away from the trauma, but I thought it was important to understand Peter's journey.

Minor editing issues that scratched at me a bit, but rare enough that it was worth brushing past them.

I'm, normally, really clear about my book opinions. This book seems determined to make me doubt mussels because I'm struggling to wrangle my thoughts into a cohesive message.

The one thing I will say is that I'm starting to think Merry Farmer is just not for me. Once again, the story is fine but it feels... uninspired, like every other Farmer book I've read. Also, for a book touted as SUPER, INSANELY STEAMY, meh.

For a book whose characters bent themselves and their many, many partners into every imaginable position, it was not sexy-- at all. I am intrigued by the political machinations. Those may prove interesting.

It makes me sad to DNF because I actually think the premise is great, it's just the execution that failed for me.

Peter is a guy who is bullied by his brothers and father on daily basis. One time, he is thrown out of the city and is left to the wolves, the one thing Peter is the most scared of. He finds refuge with four men in a house, in the middle of the forest. They drug him and SA him. Next day, Peter wakes up and reacts to it as if it were okay and accepts it immediately without questioning a single thing.

I like stories that are rational, that don't feel unrealistic when it comes to a character's behaviour. This wasn't it.

What an Amazing Story!
It is gutsy, cheeky, fascinating and most definitely shows what this kind of lifestyle and story world would probably be like.
Lots of heat and very different to what I expected, but then again, I didn't really know what I expected (besides a great story) and ventured into this world quite blind.
It is written in Merry's usual, no holding back style where the story just simply flows and it held me totally and utterly captivated. I have never read anything like it.

Peter and the Wolves by Merry Farmer – This is on kindle unlimited. While I have read Merry Farmer books in the past, this is an entirely different brand of spicy than her usual fair. And I really liked it! I haven’t read a lot of medieval fantasy romance lately, but this was some fun world building! There won’t be any trouble filling four books worth of drama at the rate Peter is going! Happy Reading!

A unique loose interpretation of the old Peter & the Wolf story. I enjoyed most of the book, Peter & his moxy, intellect, & attitude get him through many shall we say sticky situations. I won't spoil anything; I'll only say Peter & the ever-evolving relationships surrounding him make for titillating reading. The world-building is cool. I'm very much looking forward to continuing on with the series. Loved the way things were handled in the end of book one, nice lead-in to the next one. Good job.

I went into this book, thinking it would be like a shifter omega book, boy was I wrong!... but in a good way.

Peter was of noble birth, the son of a Duke. Cast aside for his sequel preference and femininity, he was literally thrown to the wolves. Being found by Dimitri was a blessing and a curse. Treated as a "pup" of the pack helped Peter with his sequel awakening and the love of their leader, Sascha. What a journey this was. Can't wait to read more.

I really did enjoy this story and would have given it 5 stars if not for all the typos. I wish I could edit this book properly! As a grammar nerd, it takes me out of the story when I get caught up in misspellings, swapped words, etc.
That said, I still started the second book as I'm invested in the story and do understand why certain things had to happen in order to move the story forward. I look forward to getting to know all of the characters more.

From all the reviews, I expected this to be a shallow, smutty mess of constant porn, especially b/c it basically started off with Peter being roofied and pretty much gang-raped. And yes, there was lots of sex, but there was more depth to the story than expected. Not all of it good, but it shaped Peter into a leader and the man I think he becomes in the rest of the series.
So I have to keep reading to make sure Peter gets revenge against Dimitri and then his own HEA.

I enjoyed the story, but it was spoiled by the fact that the author made it clear that it was her second edition, fine, but spoiled who Peter would end up with so it did distract from the story as I kept waiting for a certain character to appear. The non con scene would be a trigger to some sort of please bear that in mind. I don’t have triggers and tbh I have read worse.

Next book is nearly 600 pages long so it will need to engage me immediately or else I’ll probably not bother.
