Written with wit, humour and candour, Regrets, None is a rare memoir that is unafraid to bare it all. It follows veteran theatre personality Dolly Thakore's life and career -- growing up in Delhi and an assortment of Air Force stations, getting her start in theatre in college, her time in London, involvement with social issues, casting for Gandhi and filming it across India, working in radio, television and advertising while returning always to her first love, theatre. Dolly Thakore brings alive another era -- the glitz, the glamour, the struggles. She speaks candidly about love, sex, infidelity, motherhood, commitment, the ecstasy and the heartbreaks. She emerges as a true-blooded embodiment of what it means to be a strong, empowered, vulnerable, courageous (and sometimes outrageous) woman.
I have just watched one show of dolly thakore ....vagina monologues in Mumbai a long time back ...I think over 10 years back ..besides that, I was just aware about this lady in a saree with her trademark red bindis! Thats it ...but with a headline like regrets none , I was tempted to pick this up and found it pretty engrossing ! What a life she has led....I'm amazed I hadn't known more things about her , considering she has been into Pr/ corporate communications/ advertising and theatre ...and the fact that I have also dabbled in these....would love to have the book signed by her sometime and chat up ...a good read for sure !
Dolly Thakore, self-confessed enfant terrible of her family, maverick media personality & the grand dame of India's The Vagina Monologues pens her memoirs. Controversial friends & love affairs, disturbing communal tangles, Dolly takes them all on no-holds barred. The book is full of memories & personal reflections narrated in a disarming, honest style. If you've ever had the pleasure to meet the author in person, you'll hear her voice & characteristic laugh in the words. There's power & grace, even a hint of mirth even as the accounts sway from the quaint to extremely dark (sexual predators, complicated familial bonds, pre-independence social politics). I'm taking a break from the book right now simply because you can have too much of a powerful thing but I intend to return to it shortly.
