Schone Einführung zum Thema Tauben, die eher kulturell als biologisch geprägt ist. Da ich danach noch Lust habe, mehr über Tauben zu erfahren, seh ich das Buch als gelungen an.

Viele Menschen verspüren einen scheinbar angeborenen Hass auf Tauben, die "Ratten der Lüfte". Dabei verbreiten Tauben objektiv nicht mehr Krankheiten als andere Tiere auch, selbst ihr Kot weist einen neutralen PH-Wert auf und kann nichts kaputt machen - im Gegenteil, Taubenkot wurde in früheren Zeiten als Dünger verwendet. Und nicht nur das - Tauben galten lange als Symbol der Reinheit, sie wurden als Medizin verwendet (nicht besonders taubenfreundlich übrigens) und nicht umsonst gibt es heute noch die symbolische Friedenstaube.

Von all dem erzählt dieses Buch - doch es erzählt auch davon, wie grausam Menschen sind und wie grenzenlos die Phantasie der Menschen ist, wenn es um Tierquälerei geht. Nicht nur in Bezug auf Taubenjagd oder die heute überall verbreiteten Stäbe und Spieße auf Gebäuden/Fensterbänken, mit denen Tauben vertrieben werden sollen - die vor allem dazu führen, dass die Tiere sich verletzen und langsam und elendig zugrunde gehen. Oder darauf, dass Tauben oftmals aus dem Stadtbild verbannt werden sollen - ebenso wie Obdachlose und Prostituierte, halt alles, was nicht "schick" ist.

Tauben sind sehr intelligente Tiere, verfügen über ein unvorstellbar feines Navigationssystem und können Muster besser und schneller erkennen, als es der Mensch jemals könnte. Diese Fähigkeiten können Menschen natürlich nicht anerkennen, ohne sie gleich aufs brutalste auszunutzen. So wurde die Friedenstaube zur Kriegstaube und wurde darin ausgebildet, kleine Bomben zu transportieren. Außerdem finden bis heute Taubenrennen statt, bei denen Tauben absichtlich manipuliert werden, um "bestmögliche" Ergebnisse zu erzielen - nur um sie anschließend zu beseitigen, wenn die Tiere ausgedient haben.

Ich empfehle dieses Buch ausdrücklich nicht Lesenden, die mit der Schilderung von Tierquälerei nicht umgehen können. Mich hat es sehr kalt erwischt und total fertig gemacht. Nichtsdestotrotz hat diese Schilderung natürlich ihre Berechtigung - sie hilft, die Geschichte der Taube zu verstehen und den irrationalen Hass vieler Menschen auf diese harmlosen und höchst beeindruckenden Tiere hinterfragen zu können.

das Buch gibt einen knappen Einblick in die Historie der Taube. kann die Reihe "Naturkunden" sehr empfehlen :)

Interesting portrait of the relationship between humankind and pigeons and doves. This is less of a science book and more of a cultural history. Therefore the majority of the book is pretty depressing as it deals with the relentless pursuit these beautiful and interesting birds endured and still endure at the hands of humans. The last part consists of very small portraits of eleven species and brings with it kind of a silver lining to all the horrifying facts that came before: if we care and we try it's oftentimes possible to save a threatened species from extinction.
This is a good short and introductory read, for me as an experienced birder it doesn't contain enough information to keep me really invested.

While pets and wildlife have legal protection, even if they don't always experience it, the situation for threshold animals is precarious as soon as they come under human scrutiny. [...] They can only be saved by a positive outcome of the cost-benefit analysis which Homo oeconomicus tends to subject everything to. If they are not perceived as cute or beautiful, interesting or at least useful for some ecosystem, they are considered undesirable and superfluous, and it is only a small step to their elimination.

Karin Schneider's portrait of pigeons is a textbook example of an animal that is suffering greatly from humans' egocentric perception of its usefulness to them.
After being one of civilization's most beloved and useful companions for centuries in several ways, pigeons were eventually discarded and are now demonized for "invading our space".

This book lovingly chronicles the history of the relationship between us humans and this bird in a fairly breezy but insightful way, and explores how we eventually pushed this unfair reputation onto them to justify our cruelty. Pigeons might be one of the biggest example for this phenomenon and their story is fascinating, but there are plenty of animals out there that we treat similarly and so this book becomes a lot more meaningful and important if one wants to live in harmony with the world we inhabit.
It's an engaging and easy read with lots of beautiful illustrations, and probably a must-read at least for city folk. It hopefully makes plenty of people re-evaluate how they think about the animals that we share this planet with.

Go and feed your local pigeons. With proper seeds and nuts, not bread and junk food.
They're ancestors of our communal pets and every insult someone throws their way is because of the desperate situation we have put them in. You might feel inconvenienced by them, but they are the actual victim here.

A beautiful book about beautiful birds.

The printing is stunning and the read quick, easy and interesting.
Of course you can't capture everything about pigeons in just a few pages, but I think, the author did a beautiful job in painting a portrait of the birds, bringing it closer to the sceptic reader and evoking love for these wonderful and misunderstood birds.

Recommend, it is beautiful, educational and entertaining.

Das Buch schafft es hervorragend zu informieren und gleichzeitig zu bewegen. Auch wenn man bereits tief in der Thematik drin ist, wird es einige neue Fakten und Informationen zu erfahren geben, da sich gerade nicht auf altbekanntes und häufig zitiertes beschränkt wird. Ein tolles Buch mit einem ganz wichtigen Thema!
