All I wanted to do was see my escape room business succeed, but then a friggin’ demon showed up in Boston to tear my place apart, and I ended up tumbling into another world. One I’ve actually heard of. Now, I’m fighting my way through Asgard with the survivors of Ragnarok, and I’ve somehow gained some pretty wild shifter powers. It looks like these people could use a guy as clever as me if they wanna stay alive, but my wits aren’t the only thing I’m bringing to the table. It’ll take that and a lot more to survive in this demon-infested world, but I’ve always thrived in a bit of chaos.
I know I say this about most of Eric Vall's books, but this one is a fantastic read? Once you start you don't want to put it down. It's full of enough action, intrigue and humor too keep me up until the late hours of morning.
I'm excited for this series and can't wait to see where it will lead!
This was an interesting story without a lot of plot development. It seemed to survive on a couple of wild sex scenes that built up very well, but there was very little other suspense in the novel. Everything the main character tried to accomplish happened just the way he planned it and it happened the first time. The scenes were set really well and the descriptions made the world come to life. Using the "F" word as a punctuation mark was very offputting, and it was quite a turn-off for me in the book.
I can't speak to the book past chapter 5, but the beginning was terribad. And the protagonist is the least likable guy since Evan in Dragon Emperor. Dropped.
I might have just been in a mood though, so it's possible i'll like it more if i pick it up again at a later time.
This book follows the authors tried and true plot that’s been used and reused so much it’s gone well past it’s prime. Guy falls into alternate world. Guy discovers he has great martial prowess and/or magical powers that he is nearly perfect at controlling dispute having very little knowledge or training. Guy attracts girl who is super out of his league and for some arbitrary reason finds him ridiculously attractive. Super suspicious Guy we all knew was a bad turns out to *gasp* be an actual bad guy. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. The names and themes change, but the overall plot and play through hasn’t changed, and, well, it’s disappointing. It’s not a BAD book, and if it’s your first intro to this author it’s okay, but if you’ve read literally anything else by this author your seeing something vaguely familiar.
Okay, something occurred to me… I seriously think Eric vall is also Logan jacobs… the similarities are insanely close. They say the same things, use the same names and 100% are almost identical… I’m sure it’s either a pen name or something of the sort… EITHER WAY, I don’t care. It’s just hilarious how I read jacobs and was like I’ve never read this guy, I love his work and then things fell into place and I’m like wait a second!! 🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️😏. But now that’s out of the way I’m really enjoying this story! It was a slow burn at first but Levi is starting to come into his own. I can’t wait to see what he does. I’m so happy his form isn’t limited to animals, but what his imagination can come up with. I’m truly curious how far he can take his powers… also Sylmarie, hubba hubba! I think he’s going to grow an impressive harem, and if I know how vall is 😂 and I DO (summoner, lottery king etc) his harem will be quite nice… so I’m waiting patiently to see what’s in store for our hero. On to the next book!
I've read many of Eric's books. I stopped midway through Succubus Lord because it got too repetitive and pedestrian. A few others I finished. I liked this story both for its setting and the characters. They seem more real for their location. I will definitely watch for book 2.
I do think the book could use a run through grammerly or something to catch a few more edits. Mostly it's pretty clean and a good run.
But, yeah Vakyries, Asgard after Ragnarok. Definitely some good points not sure about the wolf shark but interesting. But curious about one thing, if you killed a wolf shark, why wouldn’t you keep the carcass for its sharkskin leather and steak meat if you're desperate for food and materials?
Another great start to a new series. I'm hooked on book 1 and now need book 2. The world building and character development are as usual on par for Mr Vall. The story is fun and has heap of entertaining action sequences in it. The back story for Levi is very well done and I can think of one Asgardian demigod that shares the same first and last letters of their names. Their personalities are also very similar and it was great having a mc who is a bit of a prankster. I would love to see more of this in future books. Do yourself a favour and read this now.
Eric Vall is an excellent writer and competent storyteller. In this new series we meet Levi Carmichael, whose CV checks all the boxes for a portal hero. Young guy, a loner, good fighting skills and sharp wit, but without a stable relationship or real success in his life.
Then he is transported to a primitive world full of seriously bad dudes (demons, no less), and beautiful, oppressed people. He finds his niche, and we go along for the ride.
Good read. Looking fwd to Book 2. Highly recommend.
When you can fight for those who can not fight for themselves, you are honorable, but doing so when you find that you can shape-shift too than your deserving to be a God (in the making).
Took about 52% of the book to really get fun, but when it did it was a lot of fun. I enjoy a lot of stories from this author and I'm expecting the next in this series to be better.
I know when I read a book like this that it will be a tried and true formula. I do not expect Shakespeare, but I do expect to rip through a yarn without co strongly being pulled out of the story by an annoying over use of a word. The word smirk (and its permutations ) occurred 75 times in this book (thanks Amazon for the word search function) the story wasn't bad and the writing was pretty good just that damned word.......
Really enjoyed this initial episode. I found the references to Norse mythology an intriguing and entirely appealing aspect. Eric Vall seems to be going down the shapeshifter path, as his last three efforts (all excellent, BTW) have centered around shifter MCs. Looking forward the the next installment. Highly recommended!
This was an incredible story with a really fascinating concept that made for a spectacular world! To say I can't wait for the next one is a real understatement. The characters were also top notch and I can't wait to see their growth!
Rather than the usual cheery vision of Asgard, we visit it post-Ragnarak. The story is more of a slow burn harem novel but you can get hints where it’s going. Interesting to see what else new Asgard holds.
A regular guy, although quite tall, is starting at the bottom to conquer all. Be interesting how he gains more powers! It can't be just shapeshifting! Can he shift larger than a troll? Be interesting to find out.
Interesting twist on post Ragnarock world, and a man displaced in time and space. Well crafted with Smith dialogue with occasional snark, action adventure and spice. I mean a hot almost Valkyrie. Looking forward to book two!
This was pretty good. Read it in 2 days. Kept me involved. MC is not overpowering, but shows a lot of promise in books to come. Definitely want to see where Eric takes this storyline.
This is an enjoyable story. The MC is likable and the story flows well. If this is your first story by Eric Vall do yourself a huge favor and start reading his books.
